As it gets later and later in the internship hunting season, you need to change the focus of your internship search to more local possibilities. There are still opportunities to get an internship half way across the country, fly in for interview, land the job, and spend the summer in a new city, but they’re dwindling quickly. That type of hiring process just doesn’t work well in May for Summer internships. As disappointing as it may seem, you might have to spend the summer living with Mom and Dad. What kind of local options do you have? It depends where you live. One option that is available in many locales is interning for a local tv station. Most areas have some form of local station, and these stations can always use interns. It’s not as glamorous as interning for a major network, but the experience can be much more hands on. One example of a local television station that is still hiring Summer interns is Your TV20 in San Francisco.
The types of internships that local television stations offer can be all over the board. Your TV20 has a great sampling of different types of internships for college students with different interests. They have positions on their Street Team for students who are interested in marketing, promotions, and event planning. There are Engineering internships that will put you right in the middle of their broadcast and information systems. Your Green Life is an environmental show (big surprise for a San Francisco based tv station) that needs interns to help them research stories and gather information. There are also internships in Production, Promotions (different from the Street Team), Research, and Sales. The descriptions on Your TV20’s Jobs page are excellent, so give them a look for a better idea of what each internship’s requirements are.
All internships at Your TV20 are unpaid and must be done for college credit. You need to be available for the entire summer, and must also be able to work at least 15 hours per week. You can apply for any of the internships by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@yourtv20.com, but remember that you must apply for a specific internship.
This is just one example of the amazing internship offerings that you can find at a local tv station. Use the skills we’ve taught you and go research your local tv station for internship opportunities. If you can’t find any, cold call them and tell them why they should hire you as an intern. It’s mid-May, and the internships aren’t going to find you.
