Do you really like reading our posts? Especially on weekends? Do you find job search, especially in the non-profit sector, absolutely fascinating? If you answered yes to all (or even one) of those questions, then we should talk. No, we’re not looking for an intern to help us research companies for our non-profit weekends feature (unless that’s something that you’d like to volunteer for, we’d be happy to consider creating a position for someone), but we’d love to chat with you. We’d also love to tell you about a few non-profit internships that we found right under our noses. Action Without Borders - Idealist.org is one of our favorite non-profit job and internship search sites, and they have a number of internship opportunities that are still available for the summer.
If you’re looking for a non-profit internship and you haven’t used Idealist.org, you’re missing out. You should also be subscribed to One Day, One Internship. Idealist.org is run by Action Without Borders, which is a non-profit organization that is “working to build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives in a healthy environment.” They were founded in 1995 as Contact Center Network in New York City, where they aimed to create places “that would serve as a physical meeting space in each community, where people could post messages and connect with neighbors who might share interests and ideas for local action.” That mission quickly moved to the Internet where Idealist has become the ultimate site for non-profit organizations to connect with donors, potential employees, volunteers, and other organizations. Job search quickly became an essential part of their mission, and has also become a key revenue driver that provides most of their funding.
Action Without Borders - Idealist.org currently has 7 internship opportunities listed for the summer. Some of them seem to be outdated, since the start dates have passed, but one would think that Idealist, being in the job search business, would know better than to leave stale postings. Internship opportunities include: Idealist.org Podcast Research Intern, Idealist Fairs Outreach Intern, Job Board Outreach Intern, Nonprofit HS/CC Careers Internship, Newsletter Project Intern, Nonprofit Careers Communications Intern, and Nonprofit Careers Research Intern. Each of the listings is very detailed and has specific instructions, so make sure that you read over them carefully before applying. All of the internships appear to be unpaid and located in Portland, OR. Idealist will not provide housing or relocation assistance, so make sure that you have somewhere to live. Oddly enough, Idealist only uses their own job board to post their openings. We couldn’t find a Careers section or anything resembling one on their site. That’s definitely something that they should have one of the interns they’re hiring look into.
