After only two years away at college, my family decided to replace me. My sister wanted a new brother, and my parents wanted a new son, so they decided to host an exchange student. They had heard good things about AFS, and our high school had typically hosted an AFS student every other year, so they looked through the book of students whom they thought would be a good fit with our family and picked one from Italy. Luca was a great addition to our family, even if he was supposed to be my replacement. We had a great time with him, and learned a lot. I’m not sure that we did much to achieve AFS’s goal of “building a more just and peaceful world through international student exchange,” but we certainly enjoyed the experience.
AFS used to be known as American Field Service, but we can’t seem to find a single reference to that name on their web site. We’re guessing that they dropped it for a more international feel. They’ve put together a really great program that makes international student exchange an easy process. They provide a lot of programming (which an unnamed participant found extremely boring) and support for students to make sure that their time away from home is enjoyable and educational.
AFS is a non-profit that usually helps students from across the world spend a year studying and living with a host family in a foreign country. This fall and winter they are enabling a couple college students to “exchange” in their office. They have two internship opportunities in New York City that appear to be available this fall. One is in Web Training and the other is in Educational Materials Development. Both internships are unpaid, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to internships@afs.org for the Web Training internship and research@afs.org for the Educational Materials internship.
