We’re just getting into the thick of campus recruiting season now, and that means that the most ambitious college underclassmen need to start thinking about internships. I know that it seems kind of ridiculous to think of a Summer internship already, but before you know it, it will be too late. Although internship recruiting usually happens a little later in the year, there’s no reason not to start checking out some of the more selective companies while they’re on campus doing entry level recruiting. Altman Vilandrie & Company is one of those companies that is making campus visits now. They’re a Boston based boutique consulting firm that “focuses exclusively on the communications, media, and related technology and investor sectors.” As they put it, they’re “a unique, pure play communications and media strategy consulting group.” They won’t have the broad range of clients of a larger firm, but the projects that they work on are still going to be quite variable.
Getting an internship in consulting isn’t easy. If you haven’t yet made the decision to aim for a career in consulting, you need to get started fast. Spend some serious time over the next few weeks investigating the industry and getting familiar with all of the major players. It wouldn’t hurt to start practicing your case interview skills either. Landing an internship in consulting is a seriously intense process, and I’d imagine that holds true at Altman Vilandrie too. Considering that they only do campus recruiting at Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, and Wellesley, you can see the kind of talent they’re looking for. With that said, they are open to hearing from students at other schools. Even though Altman Vilandrie doesn’t typically do internship recruiting until after the New Year, it makes sense to reach out to them early and get some clarity into the intern recruitment process for students at non-target schools.
Although they don’t say much at all about their internship program on their website (but I’ll put a big bet on their being paid), Altman Vilandrie does a great job of describing what life at Altman Vilandrie is like on their Culture page. Despite Altman Vilandrie’s focus on Media and Communications, I’d imagine that they worry more about talent than industry knowledge when it comes to interns, so don’t get bent out of shape if your major doesn’t match up. If you think that you have what it takes and Altman VIlandrie isn’t visiting your campus (or you missed them), reach out to them at recruiting@altvil.com. It maybe too early to apply now, but getting started now will have you well prepared for the heat of chasing down an internship in consulting.
