Entering third grade was a big deal for me. It had nothing to do with school though. It was all about the fact that I was eligible to become a member of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. That meant that a three minute walk from my house gave me access to bumper pool, ping pong, and basketball. I absolutely loved it. While it was mostly fun and games for me, I knew that there was more to the club than that. We were required to take our hats off when we entered the club, and all of the rules were enforced strictly, but fairly. It wasn’t a place to go and get into trouble. That’s exactly what Boys & Girls Clubs of America wants. They are an Atlanta, GA based national non-profit with clubs all across the country that aims to “promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.”

Join the Club

The first Boys Club was opened in 1860 in Hartford, CT. The goal was to keep boys from roaming the streets. In 1906 a number of Boys Clubs decided to join together, and that’s when the idea of a national organization really started to take hold. You could say that the idea worked out considering that there are now close to 4,000 chartered facilities (you should check out all of the organization’s Facts and Figures). What’s even more impressive is that in 2011 “The Chronicle of Philanthropy placed Boys & Girls Clubs of America in the No. 1 position among youth organizations for the 18th consecutive year.”

It’s hard to fully describe how much this organization has positively impacted American youth, but if you visit their website, you’ll learn more about what they do and why they do it. If you’d like to join them, take a look at Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Careers page. They offer pages for both National Headquarters and Local Club opportunities. The former includes internships in Sports, Entertainment, & Alumni Development, Planning & Measurement, Public Relations, Keystone Club, and Resource Development (Los Angeles, CA). Some of the positions are listed as unpaid, while it doesn’t say for the others.
