Today we’ve found a number of internships for the academic minded soon-to-be-interns. If you’re fascinated by public policy or foreign relations and would like to work in a non-profit, you’ll definitely want to read on. The Brookings Institution is a non-profit public policy organization based in Washington, DC. They conduct high-quality, independent research and, based on that research, they provide innovative, practical recommendations that advance three broad goals: strengthen American democracy; foster the economic and social welfare, security and opportunity of all Americans; and secure a more open, safe, prosperous and cooperative international system.

The Brookings Institute has a number of different internship programs for this summer, all of which have different deadlines, but the same pay (none whatsoever). We’ll start with the internships with the nearest deadline and move on from there. First, there are the Governance Studies Research Internships which will grant interns the opportunity to work with respected scholars in their research of different public policy issues. The deadline for these internships is March 14th. If you have an interest in foreign policy, you should look at the Internship in the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies with a deadline of March 28th, the Internship in The John L. Thornton China Center with a deadline of April 4th, and the Internship in Saban Center for Middle East Policy with an April 10th deadline. While we were writing this post, in fact, Brookings just added another Summer internship in Press Marketing, which has no deadline specified. This internship is very different from the others; nonetheless, it looks quite intriguing. Each internship has a detailed description with subject matter, expected tasks, and requirements, so you should certainly visit the links we’ve provided.

We’ll also note that Brookings has a few more internships listed on their internships page, but they were posted last year and could be well past the deadline. There are also Fall 2008 internships at the Brookings Center for Executive Education for those of you who are looking that far ahead. We haven’t looked too deeply into Brookings’ public policy positions or what projects they work on – we’ll leave that up to you, but we really like the way that they’ve addressed internships on their website. They make the process extremely clear and describe their internships well. That’s why we’re talking about them.

We’re always looking for more non-profit internships to feature on the weekends. Why don’t you recommend one? That’s what the comments section below is for.

The Institute for the Study of War is looking for highly qualified undergraduate interns for our Fall and Winter internship programs. The interns will work on ISW’s Iraq and Afghanistan Projects, conducting research on past and present military operations. Students with strong language skills in Arabic, Pashto, Dari or Urdu are urged to apply.
