Gender in the workplace is a complicated issue. Over the past 50 years, a lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same. Over that time one of the organizations that has played a significant role in “expanding opportunities for women and business” has been Catalyst. They’re a non-profit headquartered in New York, NY and with offices in Sunnyvale, CA; Toronto, Canada; and Zug, Switzerland. Since they were founded in 1962 they have studied “women and men across levels, functions, and geographies to learn about women’s experiences in business, barriers to their career advancement, and individual and organizational strategies leading to success.” They provide this research to their members (they’re a member organization) with the goal of “building the inclusion that will expand opportunities for women in the workplace.”

Catalyze Your Career

Considering that my college education at Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations was all about studying the world of work, I’m pretty interested in what Catalyst is all about (even if they’re not working to expand opportunities for me). If you’re also interested in what they’re doing, you have to check out their Research & Knowledge, the Catalyst Timeline, the Catalyst Awards, and the Services they offer. Each of these will give you a broader view of what Catalyst does and how they’re working to change workplaces and to change lives. If you like what you see, you’ll want to head over to the Catalyst Internships page. I have to imagine that they have opportunities for both men and women, though their entire Executive Staff is female. Right now they’re looking for unpaid interns in their Information Center (MLS student) and in Research. You’d think that an organization that wants to expand opportunities for women might actually pay their interns, but I guess that’s not a priority for them.
