It’s getting late. Many internships have already started, and others are starting in the next few weeks. We’re doing our best to continue finding great internship opportunities for this summer, but it’s getting harder to find internships that are worth writing about (if you know any companies that are still hiring interns for this summer, please contact us). At this point the best bet is to go local, and one employer that often takes on summer interns is the local government. That’s why we’re looking at the Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology and its internship program today.
When we came across the Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology’s internship posting (which is on a closed site, so we can’t link to it) we were really impressed. The City of Chicago is hiring interns to develop “user-centered services and processes.” Since when is anything that any government does user-centered? The posting is vague about what types of services are being developed, but we’re sure that you have enough imagination to think of the possibilities that arise when a city with the resources (and needs) of Chicago puts technology to new uses.
In fact, if you like thinking about that, these internships might be for you. The Department of Innovation & Technology is especially looking for interns who have an educational (or experiential) background in Innovation Strategy, Service and Information Communication Design, or Systems Design. These interns will most likely spend their summer “conducting user research, designing new services and communications tools, creating and implementing prototypes, and drafting project planning documents,” although there may be a few administrative tasks to do as well.
We did a little more digging to find that the major initiatives that the Department of Innovation & Technology is working on include improving case management systems, managing information security, and implementing geographic information systems.
We wish that we could tell you more about these internships, but that’s all the information that we could find. You can e-mail baraszewski@cityofchicago.org to apply or to request more information about the internships. The City of Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology is paying their interns $10.50 per hour this summer.
There are also other internships with the City of Chicago, but unfortunately there is no information about internships with the Department of Innovation & Technology on this page.
