If you’re a college student who is looking for an internship now, you’re probably just a little too young to have appreciated the unbridled free downloading of everything under copypright that those of us who are a bit older enjoyed in college. Those were the days of Napster and AudioGalaxy, before the RIAA started suing students and instilling fear in the hearts of downloaders everywhere. If anything good has come out of the whole situation with student downloading, it is that there is probably a slightly better general understanding of copyright laws than there used to be (we admit it, we had to look really hard for that silver lining). If you take an especially strong interest in copyright, you might be interested in Creative Commons, a non-profit organization that addresses many of the issues that college students face when it comes to understanding how copyright works. Creative Commons isn’t going to get you off the hook when you get served a DMCA notice via your school’s administration, but they are helping to spread the ideology of openness when it comes to intellectual property.

Creative Commons defines the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright — all rights reserved — and the public domain — no rights reserved. Our licenses help you keep your copyright while inviting certain uses of your work — a “some rights reserved” copyright.

What does that mean? It means that artists, musicians, photographers, writers, and anybody else who creates can use the Creative Commons License to maintain their rights to their work while allowing you more flexibility in the way you enjoy it. In fact, Creative Commons is an organization that does a phenomenal job of explaining who they are and what they’re about, so we’re going to leave the rest up to them. They have a great about page and a Wiki, as well as comics and videos, all of which you should check out if you’re interested in working for Creative Commons.

Creative Commons has some excellent internships available, but the deadline is March 3rd. That is in two days. We apologize for the short notice. Creative Commons’ internships are paid and located in San Francisco, CA at their headquarters. You can intern in Community Development, Business Development, Technology, or plain old Development (this one’s part-time). We think that they should have called the Technology internship something like Software Development to keep with the theme. Despite all the developing that interns at Creative Commons will apparently be doing this summer, these internships are all actually very different from each other. Take a look at the descriptions to get a better sense of what each of the jobs entails.

College students can also get involved with Creative Commons through FreeCulture.org, which is an organization aimed at promoting ” free culture ideals, such as cultural participation and access to information.” You can get involved with a local chapter or look around their site for other ways to participate. This is a great opportunity for people who are interested in the mission of Creative Commons, but who have other Summer plans.
