We first came across Current when we were researching entry-level jobs for One Day, One Job. Our first impression was that we didn’t get it. To clarify – not only did our cable provider not offer the Current tv channel, but we also didn’t understand what Current was all about. Our cable only goes up to channel 95, so we haven’t been able to tune in, but this article about Current on ReadWriteWeb helped us better understand Current’s market positioning and reason for existence. Current wants to be the place where the Internet meets television. It’s a good idea. Just look at Google Trends, and you can see how much television programming drives searches on the Internet. Current has 24/7 programming that relies on user-generated content from the net, which is definitely a new idea. Their web site is tightly integrated with their on air content, and viewers play a huge role in driving what gets broadcast.
In regards to permanent jobs, Current is one of those companies that we’re still a little skeptical about. Current’s chairman is Mr. ManBearPig himself, Al Gore (we’re super serial!). We’re not sure how much of a businessman he is. We’re also a little curious about the financials behind the IPO that Current recently filed for. For internships, we don’t think our concerns are as relevant, because even if Current hits the deadpool, you’ll probably have already completed your internship. We probably shouldn’t be so down on Current, they won an Emmy and seem to be growing. We’d still like to see them turn a profit though. Maybe our outlook would be different if we’d had a chance to watch some Current programming. If you’ve watched Current, let us know what you think about them in the comments section.
Now, let’s talk about the Internships and student employment opportunities that Current is offering. One is geared towards music journalism – the Current Fix Internship – and the other seems to be geared more towards television production – Summer and Fall 2008. Both are located in Los Angeles, require at least 20 hours’ commitment a week, and are unpaid. We promise we’ll bring you some paid internships soon. Current also has jobs for students as a Student Executive Producer or Student Outreach Representative. Only students at certain colleges (they’re listed on the pages we linked to) can apply for these jobs. These jobs are paid, and they are meant to be done remotely. That means you aren’t restricted to the typical Summer internship schedule or locations.
We’ll also note that Current accepts (and pays for) user-generated content. If you’re creative, especially with video, you might want to submit something to them. It’ll give you something to put on your resume, and it might even put money in your pocket.
