Today’s company needs no introduction, since there’s a good chance that you arrived at our site through one of the Facebook ad campaigns that we’re running. You’ve probably heard a lot about Facebook’s valuation and whether or not it’s very realistic, but that’s not as big a deal to an intern as it might be to someone who is looking for a full-time, entry-level job at Facebook. Since the only internships that we’ve found at Facebook are in software development, we think it’s more important to mention that Facebook is the second largest PHP-based website in the world. The things that they do with their databases to meet constant demand for up-to-the-second accuracy will awe even the most smug computer geeks. This post on the Facebook Blog about Facebook’s new East coast data center tells you all about how they’ve accomplished scaling their systems to stay ahead of demand.

We’ve already blown the surprise; Facebook only has internships available in Software Engineering. That might be disappointing for the non-coders out there, since Facebook wants someone who is already a computer science student with working knowledge of a PHP, perl, or python. They also want someone who is familiar with MySQL and Oracle, and you’ll apparently get bonus points for a great taste in music. Now, our only experience with Facebook interns is that they appear to be the ones who approve our ads when we first submit them (we get a referral in our log files from http://www.dev.facebook.com/intern/admarket/review_ads.php). We hope these are either interns in another department (if so, why can’t we find out anything about these internships), or it’s a small task that is just a part of being intern, but not too intruding on the learning experiences that internships should be about. Approving ads all day wouldn’t be very fun. On second thought, seeing all the ads that Facebook rejects might actually be entertaining. [Editor's note: Intern stands for internal according to a former Facebook intern who commented on the post, so ignore what we said about reviewing ads, and go read the comment]

We should also mention that one of our readers at One Day, One Job commented on our post about entry-level jobs at Facebook that she interviewed with Facebook and felt that a lot of the people were rude and snotty. We can’t verify the accuracy of the information, but it’s definitely something to watch out for. We’re sorry to say that we don’t have more Facebook internships for you, but that’s all the information that we could find - Googling “facebook intern” only gives your results like this (which you should file under how to get fired from your internship).

    I was a facebook intern.

the intern in “http://www.dev.facebook.com/intern/admarket/review_ads.php” stands for “internal” not internship, and those are approved by a team of customer service people, definitely not the engineers. Facebook does offer a few internship in non-software engineering, but its more of a specific thing, so get in the touch with them and let them know!

    Hey Kris,

Thanks for clearing that up for us. We thought that was maybe Facebook’s version of making the coffee for interns, but we’re really glad to hear it’s not. I added a note to the post clearing that up, since deleting it would make you look like you’re talking about something that didn’t exist. Great comment! Thanks again.

I interviewed with Facebook for a summer internship and was extended an offer. I turned it down because I’m more interested in Management Consulting and so accepted a summer internship with the prestigious McKinsey & Company.

Facebook is difficult to get into, without a doubt. They expect a lot from you and you need to be very, very succint and on-point with all your answers!

    Mike, I love the self-flattery
