Fast Company Internships

We often mention it when companies that we feature receive accolades or press from top business magazines. One of the publications that we often look to for a nod of credibility as a great internship employer is Fast Company, and today we’re going to look at some of their internship offerings. If you’re not familiar with Fast Company, it’s both a magazine and an online social/content network. They’re business focused and typically report on “innovation, digital media, technology, change management, leadership, design and social responsibility” (from Wikipedia). Fast Company is definitely one of the “cooler” business publications that you’ll come across.

Are You Fast Enough?

Before we get into Fast Company’s internships, we’re going to call them out. Their Jobs and Internships page seems to be impossible to navigate to from their home page, although it does appear when you do a Google search. It also contains no specific information on jobs or internships, and their isn’t even an e-mail address to apply to. That’s not very “fast” of them. They do a nice job of telling you why Fast Company would be a cool place to work, but that’s all that they do. We generally consider such lack of care towards a Jobs / Internships page to be indefensible, but it’s really bad coming from a site / magazine that publishes articles on recruiting and retaining talent through internships and how to salvage a disappointing internship. In our book “fast” companies have great Jobs / Internships pages and actually use them to post their jobs and internships.

Since we couldn’t find any solid info about internships on Fast Company’s site, we had to go to Ed2010 where there is a post about Spring ’09 Editorial internships. The internships (3 positions) are in New York City and are paid. Interns at Fast Company get to work with senior editors, write blog posts, and attend editorial meetings. There’s also research and fact checking work and the opportunity to get a few small bylines in the magazine. To apply, you should send a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples to Kate Rockwood at krockwood@fastcompany.com before November 1st.

Fast Company is a great magazine for the entrepreneurial spirited – thanks for the heads-up, Willy.
