Some of the most effective non-profits are the ones that work at a local level; however, the non-profits that operate at the national level usually have a much easier time raising money. Feeding America is a non-profit that is able to take advantage of both these facts by using a network model. Based in Chicago, they are “the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.” They’re able to do this by operating “a nationwide network of member food banks.” This network of more than 200 food banks across every state distributes “more than 2.5 billion pounds of food and grocery products annually.” Those are numbers that are hard to get your mind around.
Feeding America used to be known as America’s Second Harvest. They changed their name in 2008 to better convey their mission and generate awareness—I think that they made a good choice. Feeding people isn’t complicated; it’s one of oldest charity ideas around. Doing it on the scale that Feeding America does is different. It’s not necessarily complicated, but it’s extremely impressive. What I find amazing is that Feeding America is able to provide 7 people with meals for every dollar donated. That is an outstanding return on investment. If you’re as impressed by Feeding America as I am, you should check out their Careers page and browse their Internship openings. Right now they have two internships posted at their Washington, DC location; one paid—Child Hunger Corps Intern—and one unpaid—Public Policy & Programs Intern. I’m sure that if you keep an eye out, you’ll find something in the Chicago office, and you may also want to watch for internship opportunities at other locations across the Feeding America network (these are posted on the site). They have application instructions at the end of each job description, so make sure you look at those carefully.
