My dad always tells people that he loves shopping malls because they are full of people who aren’t doing the things that he wants to do (namely fishing). My views aren’t quite so negative, but when I do visit a mall, my goal is to be in and out as quickly as possible. Luckily for General Growth Properties there are millions of people for whom malls are a destination. GGP is a Chicago, IL based real estate trust that owns and operates shopping centers across the U.S. Some of their most notable properties include: Ala Moana Center (Honolulu), Tysons Galleria (D.C.), Glendale Galleria (Los Angeles), and Water Tower Place (Chicago). That’s just the tip of the iceberg though–General Growth Properties owns more than 135 mall properties that combine for more than 140 million square feet of space.

Experience Growth

If you’ve paid any attention to the news over the last five or so years, you might be able to guess that being in the business of retail dependent real estate has been a little rocky lately. General Growth Properties got hit about as hard as you can get hit (you can get the whole story from Wikipedia). The founding family lost 97% of their net worth and the company went through bankruptcy. They’re now out of bankruptcy, and seem to be doing a lot better. To learn more about GGP, you should probably browse their mall portfolio and their Investor Relations site. If you’re interested in the intersection of retail and real estate, then you’ll definitely want to check out GGP’s Careers page. They do something really awesome that most companies don’t do: they actually list all of their entry level job titles (and it seems that internships are offered in the same areas). Opportunities are offered in Legal, Development/Construction, Accounting/Finance, Sales, Human Capital, Marketing, and Operations/Field Management. Your best bet is to browse their job openings and look for current internship postings (right now there are a few Marketing positions), but you can also just submit a résumé. It seems that they have positions in all of their properties, so that means that there are a ton of options (even if they all appear to be unpaid).
