Fashion is viral in nature. Some forward thinking individual starts wearing something that looks ridiculous. Then a few of his or her friends start dressing similarly. These people walk by strangers on the street who pick up on the new fashion, then some musicians or movie starts pick up on the trend, and it takes off. Before you know it, your mom has adopted the new fashion, and it’s not cool any more. Fashion is inherently viral, but the Gilt Groupe is a company in the industry that uses viral exclusivity to woo customers. They’ve taken a well adopted business model and put a Web 2.0 spin on it. They’ve already secured funding, and from what we hear, they are doing very well.

Join the Groupe as an Intern

Gilt Groupe is an invitation-only, high-end retailer. They offer online sample sales that are exclusive, designer-specific, and for one day only. In a way they’re like One Day, One Internship, except they sell stuff, they are invite only, and their offers are only good for one day. Our model sounds a lot friendlier, doesn’t it? That’s ok, friendly and high fashion don’t really go together anyway. The Gilt Groupe site is pretty sparse, since all of the real content is in the Members Only section. You’ll need to join if you want to do your due diligence in researching internships at Gilt Groupe. Luckily we managed to snag an invite. Right now, the Gilt Groupe only has one internship opportunity available. It’s not listed on their Careers page, but it is listed on the Careers page of AlleyCorp, a network of businesses that Gilt Groupe is a part of (they all share recruiting resources). They’re looking for Ruby Interns - no, it doesn’t have anything to do with precious gems, it’s a software development internship. If you’re a computer geek whose wardrobe goes beyond t-shirts and jeans, this internship could be a perfect fit for you.

If you love fashion, but don’t have the technical skills for the Ruby internship that is currently listed for this fall, you can watch and wait, or you can send your resume and a cover letter telling the Gilt Groupe why they need you to be a part of their team. We haven’t seen anything about internships on the fashion side of their business, but you have to think that they’ll eventually need interns in areas other than software development. Interning at the Gilt Groupe could be a great way to launch your career, since this interview with CEO, Alexis Maybank says that there’s a future with 6 figures in it at Gilt Groupe.
