Two weeks ago we talked about Google’s Summer of Code, which isn’t really an internship program. Then today we featured Google’s entry-level jobs on One Day, One Job. And we’re sure you’ve read our article How to Use Google to Find a Job (or Internship). Google, Google, Google. Well when we saw that Google still had internship opportunities listed as available on our website, we couldn’t turn down a chance to write about our favorite topic.

I’m Feeling Lucky

We’re not even going to waste your time explaining to you what Google does. If you didn’t already know, you wouldn’t be visiting a site about how to use the Internet to find internships. We’re not sure why, but for some reason Google still hasn’t filled all of their internship openings (or if they have, they haven’t closed applications on their website yet). We’d think that all of their internships would have been snapped up already. They’re still hiring new grads too, so maybe they’ve increased their hiring needs or something. Start dates range between April and July of 2008, so it’s also possible that they stagger their internship recruiting. Hiring for their Leadership Development program is already closed (and they make it clear on their site), so that reinforces are reason for believing that these internships are still out there for the taking.

Searching for College Students with Coding Skills

With the exception of internships for MBA Students, all of the internships that Google is offering require a technical background. These include Associate Product Manager Intern (Mountain View, CA; New York, NY; and Seattle, WA; or Kirkland, WA), Associate Technical Solutions Engineer Intern (Mountain View, CA), User Experience Design Intern (Mountain View, CA; Seattle/Kirkland, WA; and New York, NY), and User Experience Researcher Intern (Mountain View, CA; Seattle, WA; Kirkland, WA; and New York, NY). The Internship listings are concise and jargon free, so they should give you a good idea of what Google is looking for when it comes to interns.

Google has a great Internships site for students in North America, that includes details about their internship programs and a photo gallery of former interns. This is part of Google’s great jobs site for students, which includes more details about working at Google. For students who want to intern abroad, you can navigate to Google’s international student sites and then click through to each country’s individual internships section. There are also photo galleries from Europe and China.

The Best Place to Work

For two years in a row, Google has been named Fortune Magazine’s Best Place to Work. There are many reasons for this, as you’ll find out if you browse Google’s Jobs site. There’s life at Google, amazing benefits, and employee profiles. Judging from the photo galleries that we linked to above, Google treats their interns as well, or better, than they treat their full-time employees. Google offers a plethora of information about working for them on their site, but they also have a brilliantly simple layout that makes navigating their jobs a breeze. Internships are fully integrated into this user experience, so you shouldn’t have any frustration when searching around their site.

I have fond memories of Google’s campus recruiting efforts, because they often put puzzle inserts in the campus newspaper. If I remember correctly, that’s how I was first introduced to the game of Sudoku. These were generally targeted towards engineers, but the branding still stuck with me. Many great employers don’t take internships seriously, but Google has always shown a commitment to recruiting and developing the best college talent. We’d imagine that Google is urgently trying to get these internships filled, so act as quickly as you can. The thing that amazes us is that these are some of the most competitive internships for college students, and they’re still available in the second week of April!
