Harlem RBI

At the time that this post is set to publish, I should be off to my first softball game of the Spring, unless we get rained out (which is unfortunately looking likely). Now, I consider my Sunday morning softball games to be an “educational experience,” but the truth of the matter is that my team consists mostly of dirty old men who are 20-40 years my senior, and all I learn from them are new ways to insult people and other forms of colorful language. Still, Sunday softball is a good way to keep me off the streets and out of trouble. Harlem RBI does the same thing for inner-city kids, while also offering educational programs. I sure hope the kids in Harlem RBI are having a more meaningful educational experiences associated with their baseball and softball than I am.

A Home Run for Education

Harlem RBI is an organization that has big dreams, but is also showing results. Since 2004, 96% of Harlem RBI Seniors graduated from high school and 93% were accepted to college, while 100% of Harlem RBI youth have avoided teen parenthood. Harlem RBI has also earned a 4-star rating on charity navigator. By putting kids on teams (usually a teams link directs you to an organization’s staff, but Harlem RBI actually has over 3 dozen baseball and softball teams as a part of their mission) and combining the baseball aspect with after-school programs, Harlem RBI is maximizing the potential of its participants through consistently high involvement in their lives.

RBI = Run Batted In(ternships)

Nothing goes better with summer than baseball. Summer internships at Harlem RBI offer the opportunity to teach and coach inner-city youth in baseball, academics, and life.

Internships at Harlem RBI offer a stipend of $100 per week. Applicants who applied before March 30th were apparently eligible for work Study, college credit, and Fellowship options. We’re sorry that we we didn’t let you know about Harlem RBI before then. Maybe they’ll be flexible with that deadline, so it doesn’t hurt to ask. Also, AmeriCorps Education Awards of $1,000 may be granted to individuals after the successful completion of 300 hours of service. You can view all of the details of the internships here.

To apply for an internship with Harlem RBI send your cover letter and resume to rkjobs@harlemrbi.org with COACH in subject line.
