We’re seriously covering daytime tv this week. Yesterday we talked about soap opera internships, and today we’re talking about Oprah. We just want you to realize the sad reality that if you don’t get motivated and start working to find an internship today, you might spend the summer on the couch instead of in the office. As character building as sitting on the couch is, it’s not the type of work experience that is going to look good on your resume when you need to apply for jobs after graduation. You can’t even call it “traveling.” So instead of making an impression in the seat cushions of your couch, you should be making an impression in a real work environment. Harpo is Oprah Winfrey’s media company, and they’re still looking for Summer interns.
Oprah is one person. ONE PERSON! Yet, she has built an entire media company around her personal brand. It’s enough to inspire any college student to get serious about managing his or her own brand. Reading her wikipedia entry shows just how impressive what she has done is. Although you may not be working hand in hand with Oprah, the opportunity to get involved with something that she has her name on is pretty exciting. Harpo runs 7 different businesses, all of which are closely tied to Oprah’s personal brand. They include Harpo, Inc; Harpo Films; Harpo Radio; The Oprah Winfrey Show; O Philanthropy; TV Development; and The Oprah Store. A number of these business units have internships available.
Harpo has quite a few job openings for college students in Chicago this summer. They include: Retail Intern - The Oprah Store, Image Production Intern - Oprah.com, Publicity Intern - Harpo, Inc., Oprah & Friends Radio Intern - Harpo Radio. In addition, there’s one opportunity in Beverly Hills, CA as a Development Intern - Harpo Films. We also found an accounting internship on a closed job board (we can’t link to it), but it’s not listed on the Harpo Careers site. All internships at Harpo are paid, so that’s always a good thing.
