One year, my cousin gave me a subscription to MAD Magazine for my birthday. I had never read an issue before, but I definitely recognized their icon Alfred E. Neuman. I didn’t think that I’d get that into it, but every month I’d look forward to getting the latest issue in the mail. Most of the jokes probably went over my head, because I was about 12 years old at the time, but I’d sit there and read and laugh. The only way you’re going to understand what MAD is all about is to pick up an issue, so head out to your nearest magazine rack and get one if you’d like to put your sense of humor to work this summer.

Have You Gone MAD?

Have you ever met someone who didn’t think that he or she had a good sense of humor? Didn’t think so. Everyone thinks they do. Everyone probably thinks that they’re a good candidate for an internship with MAD Magazine too. Well, if you think you have a great sense of humor and will make a great intern for MAD, you’ll have to prove it.

Before we go any further, we have to say that the posted deadlines for these internships have passed. We haven’t gone MAD, though. We saw these internships reposted just yesterday, and you don’t pay money to repost an internship that isn’t available anymore. We’re going to guess that MAD Magazine didn’t fill their internship openings and they’re still looking (but forgot to remove the deadline from the internship description). The Editorial Internship is the one that was reposted, so it’s possible that the Design Internship position is already filled.

MAD Magazine is looking for two editorial interns and multiple design interns. The editorial interns will “participate in brainstorming sessions, work on article conception and help publish an issue. You WON’T fetch coffee or run personal errands for the staff!” Design interns will help them put together their “three, count ‘em, THREE magazines: MAD, MAD Kids and MAD Classics.” To apply for the editorial internship you should:

1. Pick up a recent regular issue of MAD (not a reprint) and familiarize yourself with it.

2. Come up with at least one premise for an article you think should be in MAD. (No TV or movie satires!) Give three examples of how you would develop it. Rough sketches are welcome but not necessary. Originality is prized.

3. E-mail your application to amy.vozeolas@madmagazine.com. Be sure to include your name, address, e-mail address, phone number and school.

All applications for the Editorial Internships are treated as submissions, so even if you’re not chosen as an intern, you can still sell them your article. They pay $400 per page, so that’s pretty sweet.

To apply for the design internships you can send your portfolio to ryan.flanders@madmagazine.com.

Internships at MAD Magazine are unpaid, and must be done for college credit, so make sure that you can arrange that. MAD’s offices are in New York City, and that’s where their interns will be working.
