Since you’re looking for an internship and not in one, you may not be familiar with corporate policies on instant messaging. That’s ok, since they tend to be all over the place. At some companies you are required to be available by IM, since it’s the main form of communication used in the work place. At other companies instant messaging is strictly forbidden and even blocked by the IT department. We’re not trying to get you fired from the internship that you don’t even have yet, but if you absolutely need 5 minutes of contact with the outside world while at work, Meebo offers an easy way to get around company filters so that you can log into your AIM, Yahoo, Gchat, MSN, icq, or Jabber accounts. In fact, IMing behind your boss’ back probably isn’t a good idea for any intern, so maybe you should just use Meebo at home for its simple web-based interface, ability to log in to multiple accounts, and ease of use. Then again, you could just intern at Meebo so that you’ll be encouraged to have Meebo open in your web browser all day long at work.

Youbo at Meebo

Meebo’s business plan is pretty simple, get lots of users, and make money through advertising. To learn more about it, you can listen to this podcast with Meebo founder, Seth Sternberg. Some would say that IM services have lost momentum with the advent of social networking sites like Facebook, but Meebo continues to stand strong with over 35 million users. They’re also putting their $37.5 million in venture capital funding to good use by developing cool new productss like chat for communities while continuing to refine their main instant messaging service. Meebo has some serious growth potential, so it’s probably an awesome place to intern.

The median age of Meebo’s users is 21, and we’ll bet that the median age of their workforce isn’t too much older. As an intern, you’ll fit right in. Right now Meebo is only offering one internship, which is presumably for the fall, in Javascript Engineering. The internship is located in Mountain View, CA, and the job description is fantastic. They don’t say whether or not the internship is paid, but software development interns generally get compensated pretty well. If you’re intrigued, send a cover letter and resume to jobs@meebo.com. Also make sure to include answers to the questions posed at the end of each job description, they’re important!
