There’s no background story necessary on this one. You know MTV. You know what they’re all about; however, you may not know that MTV Networks consists of many properties, including MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike, and a few more. To be honest, we don’t have time to tell you about MTV Networks as a company because there are simply too many internship opportunities to go over.
You can find most of MTV Networks’ internship openings on Viacom’s Job Hunt site. These include:
Nickelodeon Animation Studio Internship Program (Burbank, California) - This is for undergrads at all class levels, must be for credit (so is probably unpaid), and runs year round. Internships are available in Production/Post Production, Casting, Development, Administration/Special Events, Human Resources, and Business and Legal Affairs.
Nickelodeon CG Animation Apprentice Program (Burbank, CA) - This looks to be paid, but it’s meant for college grads with a relevant degree, so it’s somewhere between an internship and an entry-level job. Successful participants can ascend to the next stage of the program and eventually achieve full-time employment. A demo reel is an absolute must if you want to apply.
MTV Networks Internship Program (Santa Monica, CA) - This is also open to college students at all levels, but once again must be done for credit. This internship is unpaid and is available in Ad Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Casting, Animation, MTV Series Development, VH1 Original Programming and Development, VH1 Motion Picture Development, Music and Talent Relations.
MTVN Networks Latin America Internship Program (Miami Beach, FL) - This is similar to the previous internship, but the requirements appear to be a little stricter. It’s for credit, unpaid, and available in studio production and programming, on-air graphics, off-air print, wardrobe, marketing, communications, finance, information technologies, law, and on-line. Strong Spanish skills are absolutely necessary as well.
MTV Networks Internship Program (New York, NY) - This internship is for credit only, so it’s probably unpaid. Freshmen are excluded, and the deadline for Summer is April 1st. MTV in NYC offers internships in almost any area that you can imagine (there’s a list available on the page we linked to).
CMT/MTV Networks Internship Program (Nashville, TN) - The description on this one doesn’t go into as much detail, but it’s obviously for the country music lovers out there. It’s open to rising Juniors and Seniors, and once again is for college credit.
MTVU also has a Campus Rep program that is geared towards underclassmen. It’s intended to be a for credit internship that you complete while on campus (it’s about a 10 hour per week commitment). This also appears to be unpaid, and it’s only available at campuses that are listed on the page we linked to.
Finally, there is the MTVU Summer Fellowship, which is surprisingly for pay. Yes, MTV actually pays some interns!
mtvU fellows will be coming up with music/programming content for our online music group, researching digital media trends, participating in application software development projects for high-traffic media websites, working with our online games group, and gaining experience in the areas of web design, production, marketing, and strategy/research.
This is meant for high performing college upperclassmen and new grads who are at the top of their field. The web site has specific qualifications necessary for each of the fellowships. Our observation is that you probably need to be all-star to participate in this one. The length is 10 weeks, and it starts in mid-June. Did we mention that it’s paid?
