NASCAR Internships

If you’re like Derek Zoolander and can’t turn left, then a career as a NASCAR driver probably isn’t in the cards for you; however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t work for the the country’s 2nd most popular sports league (based on television ratings). Some may debate whether NASCAR is a sport or not, but nobody can debate its popularity. It’s huge. I’ve never watched more than 5 minutes of a NASCAR race, so I’m not the guy to sell you on NASCAR, but I do know that it’s a hell of a business. The league made $3 billion in profit last year, and they apparently share some of it by paying their interns.

Fast Internships

While the keys to winning a NASCAR race may be as simple as driving fast, pushing the pedal down all the way, and driving straight and turning left, getting an internship won’t be so easy. NASCAR has two distinct internship programs – a general internship program and a diversity internship program, and you can be sure that both are competitive. The diversity internship program appears to be more structured, but there’s no information on DiversityInternships.com, which is NASCAR’s site, about how to apply. The deadline for applications is March 2, 2009, so it’s pretty likely that more information will appear on that site in the next few months. There are 25-30 internship positions, and they’re in areas that include Broadcasting, Communications, Competition, Design, Diversity, Engineering, Event Management, Licensing, Marketing, Media Services, Public Relations, Sales, Sports Marketing, and Technology. We’d assume that the internships are located in Daytona Beach, FL, where NASCAR is headquartered, but we’re not sure about that. There is a FAQ about NASCAR’s Diversity Internship Program that should answer any questions you have. They do say that you need to be a college student who is “ethnically diverse,” but you can interpret that however you like.

NASCAR lists its other internships on its normal jobs site. They have an Internships page, but it feeds right into their job listings. That means that you’ll have to scan the listings for internships. Luckily, it’s not too difficult to find the three opportunities that they have for this coming spring. They are looking for a Public Relations Intern and an IT / Programmer Intern in Daytona Beach, FL, and a NASCAR Foundation Intern in Charlotte, NC. There is almost no information about these internships on NASCAR’s site, so we’re assuming that they’re paid based on the fact that the diversity internships are paid. You can apply for the internships online, and if you want to keep an eye on NASCAR’s internship offerings, you can subscribe to NASCAR’s Jobs and Internships RSS Feed.
