New is good. New clothes, new computers, new experiences, new dorms, new friends. Why stick with something that’s been around for a while when you can have something bigger and better? How about character? It might seem ridiculous to some, but there are a lot of people who actually like old stuff - especially old buildings. There’s something that speaks to them about maintaining a vision of the past by preserving the architectural high points that our predecessors reached. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t always think that newer is better, an internship at the National Trust for Historic Preservation might make your summer really enjoyable. If you’re sick of seeing the old buildings on your college campus demolished in favor of new designs that are often uglier, less functional, and extremely expensive, then keep reading.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a non-profit organization that is saving America’s diverse historic places through leadership, education, and advocacy. You can be a part of this by becoming an intern for them in Washington, D.C. at their National office or one of their historic sites (President Lincoln’s Cottage, Decatur House, Woodrow Wilson House and Woodlawn/Pope-Leighey House). There are 15-20 spots for this 10-week volunteer (read: unpaid) internship, and each intern will have individual projects and numerous educational opportunities. This internship can be completed for credit, and if you are an outstanding candidate there is a possibility that you will be selected for the Elizabeth Hynson Internship Fund, which provides a stipend. There may also be opportunities at local offices. You can find out more on the National Trust’s Internships page

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has a great website that is informative and easy to navigate. They also have a blog, which is full of useful information for preservation buffs; in fact, we were actually mentioned in the blog for our post about entry-level jobs at the National Trust for Historic Preservation on One Day, One Job. Since then, the National Trust has revamped their website (it looks great) and made most of the links obsolete (they forgot to redirect them). The post still should be helpful if you’re looking for a job in historic preservation, but you might want to use the links below to find what you’re looking for.
