If you’re a basketball fan, you’re probably gearing up for March Madness. Some of you are probably hoping that your school’s team will be on the right side of the bubble come Selection Sunday, while others are celebrating a ticket that has already been punched (Cornell!). We’re much bigger college basketball fans than we are pro basketball fans, but internships in college basketball aren’t a common thing. That’s why this post isn’t about them, but it is about basketball. Many NBA, WNBA, and NBADL Teams have summer internship programs that will give you the opportunity to decide if a career in sports is something that you really want to pursue.
If you’re looking for a lot of game related action, a WNBA internship will probably the best path to follow, since their season goes all summer. Then again, it seems like the NBA plays into August these days (ok, it’s only through the end of June), so there might be some great opportunities to watch playoff basketball. NBA Teams that are looking for interns include the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers (don’t feel bad that LeBron is your age, and makes millions of dollars, while the internships are unpaid), Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, and San Antonio Spurs. WNBA teams with internship programs include the Los Angeles Sparks, Houston Comets, Minnesota Lynx, and Chicago Sky. The Albuquerque Thunderbirds of NBA Development League have internships as well. There’s also an internship with Madison Square Garden with the Knicks and Liberty, but it seems to be focused on the arena not the team. For some reason, about half of the internships available are located in Texas – with most of those being with the Rockets or Comets in Houston.
These internships are in a wide range of fields, which include: Human Resources, Event Operations, Video Production, Spanish Radio Production, Promotions, Event Marketing, Booking Group Sales, Suite Sales, Ticket Sales & Services, Strategy Research, Corporate Development, Guest Services, Community Relations, Business Operations, Basketball Operations, Sales, Ticket Operations, Broadcasting, Radio Production, Videography/Editing, Game Operations, and Information Technology. You’ll have to visit the NBA/WNBA/NBADL Teams Jobs Internships page to see which of these internships match up with which teams and which ones are paid and which are unpaid.
If you don’t see any teams or fields that interest you, you can sign up for the NBA/WNBA/NBADL internship notification (which acts like a job application, but isn’t one) or you can just subscribe to the NBA/WNBA/NBADL Teams Internships RSS Feed.
Before the NCAA Tournament field is set and you have to spend all your time researching and filling out your bracket, take a look at the internships that the NBA, WNBA, and NBADL are offering. We haven’t supplied the usual links for research, since each team is different. You should know what to look for, and if you don’t, you can read the our Job Search Blog Archives on One Day, One Job. We’ve written some seriously in-depth articles on how to optimize your online job or internship search. Use these posts to help you find the best basketball team for you to intern with this summer.
