As a kid, I always enjoyed a good playground. What kid wouldn’t? It’s your first sense of danger. Monkey bars, slides, and contraptions that spin you around until you want to throw up may not seem all that dangerous now, but I’m sure that there was a point in your life when you were intimidated. And that’s why you grew up to be such a successful young adult—all that time on the playground. PlayPumps International also brings success to children through playground equipment, albeit in a very different way. Of course they enable kids to enjoy childhood and have fun in the face of danger just like all playgrounds do, but they are also helping to end poverty in developing nations around the world. You’ll see why in a second.

Pump Up Your Career

PlayPumps International makes play equipment that act as water pumps. You’ve always known of child labor as a bad thing; well, it’s not in this case. Kids play on fun spinny toys and whatnot, and they pump clean, drinkable water to their community—all because of equipment developed and donated by PlayPumps International. It’s absolutely brilliant! This is an organization that is making the world a better place by doing something really simple, yet really innovative. PlayPumps International doesn’t appear to have a Careers or Internships page, but they do have an internship posted on Idealist right now. They’re looking for a paid intern for the Fall of 2009. The intern will work in a number of areas including “donor prospecting; research on water policy, new technologies and potential partnership opportunities; and database management and other administrative tasks.” It sounds like an awesome opportunity in the Washington, DC area, so apply by sending a cover letter and résumé to lisa@playpumps.org if you’re interested.
