I’m not going to stop harping on the fact that the future of media is online, and that any journalism student who wants to get hired right out of college needs to be familiar with the “new media.” ReadWriteWeb is a perfect example of new media. It’s a “blog that provides Web Technology news, reviews and analysis,” and it’s the world’s 14th most linked to blog according to Technorati. ReadWriteWeb has over a quarter of a million subscribers, and they continue to break news relevant to web nerds like me. Whether you’re already a web nerd, or you’re just realizing that you need to be one to get a job, an internship with ReadWriteWeb might be just what you’re looking for
We first heard about ReadWriteWeb’s Internship program from the tweets of Marshall Kirkpatrick, who is the site’s Lead Writer. He led us to an Internship posting on the Portland Craigslist. This is one of the better internship postings that I’ve read. It speaks for itself, so go read it whether you’re interested in Journalism internships or not. This kind of honest and forthrightness should be evident in every job and internship posting. The internships can be virtual, although all of the interns so far are based in Portland. Most of the work communication is done via IM, so you need not be located anywhere in particular. The only downer about these internships is that they are unpaid, but you only have to put in 5 to 10 hours per week, so it’s not like you’ll be a total slave to ReadWriteWeb. You can apply by sending a link to one or two of your most active online presences to marshall@readwriteweb.com.
Also, one of the projects that ReadWriteWeb interns will be working on is of specific interest to me. It’s called Jobwire, and it’s all about people who have new jobs. Who gets hired can be big news in the tech world, so it make sense that ReadWriteWeb is taking on this project. If you intern for them, you might even see yourself get mentioned on Jobwire. How about that?

Thanks for this write-up Willy! I don’t know why a search feed didn’t show it to me before now but I sure appreciate it. We love our interns and we’re just now trying to build out a better system for working with them – lots more interest than we planned for. Good to know about this blog though!
