Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Logo

A few years ago, it became cool for companies to use the term “rock star” in reference to high potential applicants. As in, “We’re looking for a a rockstar PHP developer” or “She’s a total rockstar, we need to hire her.” Now everyone is saying it, and it’s lost its flare. Well, if there’s any entity that actually needs rock stars, it’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Are You Eligible?

An artist becomes eligible for induction to the Rock Hall 25 years after the release of his or her first album, while a “rock star” intern becomes eligible after only one Summer (joking). Here’s a list of Rock Hall inductees, and here’s an unaffiliated site that predicts the probability that your favorite artist will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Located in Cleveland, OH, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (which is a non-profit) was founded in 1995 to celebrate the history of rock and roll. Although we haven’t visited, it looks like they’ve put together quite an impressive collection of exhibits; in fact, you’ll notice that every page on their website (except the home page, which we just linked to) has a randomly selected “Spotlight Artifact.” We think that’s pretty cool.

Did You Score 100% on Internship Hero on Expert?

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has a whole bunch of internships, and they cover just about every topic that you could imagine. If you think that you might be interested, get your act together soon! The Rock Hall’s deadline for applications is April 18th (that’s Friday) for Summer internships (August 15th for fall and January 9th for spring); however, this is not a strict deadline. If a position isn’t filled, they’ll accept applications until it is. No, that doesn’t mean that it’s ok to procrastinate. We’ve listed all the areas that the internships cover below - some of the areas have more than one type of internship available.

The descriptions of each internship are a bit too short, so it’s hard to get a good bearing on what specifically will be expected of the interns over the course of the summer. We’d definitely like to see a little more detail. We do know that all internships at the Rock Hall are unpaid, but offer flexible work schedules, an employee discount, and paid parking. The link to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s Internships page is a bit hard to find as it’s under the More tab of their main navigation. They really should make these opportunities more visible to all of their visitors.

Applicants are expected to send a cover letter, resume, letter of recommendation from a professor, and a one page personal statement about “what you hope to bring to the internship and what you hope to gain during the internship” to hr@rockhall.org. If you love rock music, and want to spend a summer in Cleveland, one of these internships will probably be perfect for you.

We’ve been trying to think up a replacement for the term “rock star” when it comes to recruiting, but so far we’ve drawn blanks. Leave a comment and tell us what the next hot term for top talent will be.
