Apparently there’s a shortage of Fall interns. We’re two weeks into September, but there are still a lot of companies that are having trouble filling their unpaid internships. Maybe college students are finally realizing that working for free is often kind of a bad deal. Don’t get us wrong, it is getting more and more difficult to find a variety of Fall internships to write about, but we’re quite surprised to still have plenty of opportunities to cover. One opportunity that we just came across is interning with Shape Magazine in New York City. They have quite a few internships
Although I’ve never picked up a copy of Shape (it’s ok, I’m not their target demographic), I always notice that it’s prominently displayed on the magazine rack in stores. It’s pretty easy to see that Shape is targeted towards women who take their physical fitness seriously. The tabs on Shape.com include Fitness Tools, Workouts, Healthy Eating, Healthy Living, and Beauty Fashion Lifestyle. They offer features such as Q&As with celebrity trainers and advice on e-mail breakups and text message squabbles. We wish that we could tell you more about Shape as a company (it’s part of American Media, Inc.), but they offer no corporate information at all on their website. American Media’s website does have a section on Shape, but it’s pretty generic. The Wikipedia entry on Shape isn’t much help either. There’s no information whatsoever about internships or even jobs at Shape.
We found internships at Shape mentioned on ed2010, which is a “community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes.” You can find the full posting here. Shape Magazine is looking for interns in fashion, beauty, health, nutrition, fitness, lifestyle, features, and PR & Marketing in New York City. The internships are unpaid and limited to college students only (they can be for credit, but don’t need to be). To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and a list of your top three choices for departments to to Kristen Maxwell at kmaxwell@shape.com.
