We won’t be making a habit out of it, but this is the second Friday in a row that we’re writing about internships in real estate. Although it may seem counterintuitive because of the weak real estate market, the internships that we do find in real estate are really exciting. We think it’s because the companies that do things differently are the ones who are least affected by recession, and companies that do things differently are often great places to intern. SHVO is a real estate marketing firm that has seen impressive growth over the last few years - much to the chagrin of others in the real estate industry. Why the chagrin? SHVO doesn’t play by “the rules.”
SHVO is named after its principal, Michael Shvo. His vision has led the firm to an integrated marketing approach that “flows seamlessly from concept to design development to strategic marketing and advertising and finally, to experiential sales and customer service.” SHVO is known mostly for its work with luxury residences in Manhattan but is quickly spreading its business across the U.S., Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Central America.
SHVO is looking for 4 interns who are top performers with an interest in real estate, marketing, branding, events, and public relations. We found this listing on a gated job posting site, and SHVO’s website consists of a single page, so there’s not much more that we can tell you. We do know that the application deadline is May 1 and that a cover letter and resume can be sent to Laura Thoms, Director of PR, at lthomas@shvo.com. SHVO is a well known firm in a struggling industry, so we’ve decided to feature them despite the lack of publicly available information. Now for the juicy part…
We just wrote an article for One Day, One Job entitled Turning the Tables: Digging Dirt on Employers, which we recommend strongly that you read. We’re not just saying that because we want to get more hits, we actually think that it will be useful for you - especially if you’re considering working for SHVO. Why? Because there is a ton of dirt out there on SHVO and Michael Shvo. There are all kinds of accusations against him for not playing fair; however, we aren’t quite sure what to make of it when the industry that so despises him isn’t known for its ethics. We have no idea what’s true and what’s sour grapes, so we’re not taking a stand. We’ve given you the tools to become well informed; now go use them!

We usually try to post internships that are publicly available on the Internet, but this one was a bit too intriguing to pass up. Do you care where we find our internships and whether we can provide an actual listing? Or do you just want the best we can find?

Michael Shvo is a pig with a huge ego. He is rude and he seems to think he is quiet the man because of his money. In reality, people despise him. He is an awful boss and an even more terrible person. I highly recommend running as far away from this pri** as you can. When you get to the top you dont treat those who stand beneath you like crap because without them you are nothing, Michael is nothing but an insecure, semi lucky (he did make money), bastard.
We don’t like to allow abusive comments or trash talking on One Day, One Internship, but we also think that transparency is really important. We don’t know much about who this commenter is or what her interest in (or against) SHVO is, but we felt that it was important that you hear her thoughts on the company and weigh them in your decision whether or not to intern with SHVO.
i’ve worked for shvo and quit. He is truly not the best boss to intern under. Yes, he may be able to come up with great ideas but his company is not the ideal place to learn about employee relations and the inner circle/ the management inside the office. Michael has a disability which prohibits him from properly communicating with those he works closely wth - and those further down the totem pole so to speak. If you desire to intern strictly to learn about real estate and the marketing of luxary - it may be “doable” but if you are looking for an internship in which you can gain experience within a well run company…this isn’t the place.
