You know that you’ve always wanted to live on a farm in rural Vermont. Here’s your chance. Smokey House Center is an outdoor classroom for middle and high school students where they can do “farming, forestry, and ecological research — learning in the process, science, math, ecology, communications, reading, writing, problem-solving, critical thinking, responsibility and teamwork.” Smokey House offers two applied learning programs - one for disadvantaged high school students and the other for mainstream middle and high school students. Beyond being a non-profit educational organization, Smokey House Center is also a real life working farm in Danby, Vermont.
What’s Danby, VT like? It’s beautiful, but very quiet. How do I know? I lived there for a summer while I was interning for Orvis. If “going out” is something that you expect to be part of your internship experience, then interning with Smokey House Center probably isn’t for you, but if you enjoy being outdoors, fresh air, and peace and quiet, you should certainly give them a look. I’ve been to the Smokey House Center to pick up produce for the family that I was living with in Danby (they were members of Smokey House’s Community Support Agriculture (CSA) program), and Smokey House not only has a great facility, but they also have great produce. You’ll certainly get to enjoy that if you intern with them.
Smokey House Center offers a number of different internship opportunities. They still have Fall opportunities listed on their website, but we’re not sure that they’re still hiring for them (the page was last updated on 8/6/08). These are Energy Efficiency and Organic Gardening Internships and Educational Internships. They also offer Organic Farming Internships in the winter/spring and Organic Gardening Internships in the summer. We like that Smokey House leaves their internship information posted even if they’re not hiring at the moment. The internship descriptions are very detailed, so make sure that you read them to get a full sense of what it will be like to intern at Smokey House Center. They do offer a small stipend and they can also provide housing, which is good, since Danby, VT isn’t full of high rise apartments. To apply for an internship with Smokey House Center, you must download an application form from the internship description pages, complete it, and send it to internships@smokeyhouse.org.
