Have you ever served jury duty? It kind of sucks, right? Although a lot of people will never be fond of forced service, most people would be much more willing to serve on a jury if the entire process wasn’t so onerous. What about people who actually go through the judicial process? They’re probably not too fond of the system either, but may that’s because half of the parties involved in cases always lose. Whatever your view on the judicial process is, I think that we can all agree that there is a lot of room for improvement. That’s what the The Fund for Modern Courts is all about. They’re a “a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice in New York.”
Think that the judicial system is intractable and unchangeable? Think again. Consider these recent accomplishments of The Fund for Modern Courts:
They’re working to do more, and one of their major projects is the Citizens Jury Project. It was designed in 1995 to review and reform jury service in the State of New York. They act as an advocate for individual jurors who are having problems with the jury system, and they also collect data and conduct analysis to improve conditions for all jurors. The Citizens Jury Project offers paid internships year round in New York City, and right now they’re recruiting for the spring. They provide a lot of information on the internship and about the Citizens Jury Project, so check that out, and then apply by sending a cover letter and a resume to chabin@moderncourts.org with “Internship” in the subject line.
There’s also an immediate need for an Advocacy, Court Reform, Legislative Intern in New York City. This position is unpaid and may have already been filled, but maybe there are some of you out there who are still looking for a Fall internship. This is an ongoing internship opportunity, so don’t hesitate to apply if you’re reading this well after the post date. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to advocacy@moderncourts.org.
