You may remember our post from last week about uShip’s internships, well today’s company has a similar name, but a very different business. Uloop is a site for you (college students) to buy, sell, promote and trade things. They have some hefty competition in Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, but that’s not stopping them. They launched at UC Santa Barbara in 2007, and now they’re all over the place.
We haven’t used Uloop, so instead of trying to tell you about them ourselves, we’re going to let this video of their co-founder, Ryan MacCarthy, do the talking.
Pretty cool, huh? Their Jobs page makes them look even better. Unfortunately, they’ve had some labor issues that don’t appear to have been resolved yet. The alleged story is that some of Uloop’s campus reps were unhappy with an unannounced pay cut, so they decided that they wanted to unionize. They posted about this on a company message board, and were eventually fired. Those are the allegations, which if true look pretty bad. I majored in Industrial and Labor Relations, and I know way more about union issues than any 23 year old should. From what I learned, if ULoop did what is alleged, they’re probably in some trouble, but I’m really interested to see where this case goes. Unionization is not typically associated with Internet startups, so it’s understandable that Uloop wasn’t quite sure how to react to an attempt to unionize. It seems like the U in Uloop doesn’t stand for union. Regardless, we don’t know what actually happened, so it’s quite possible that Uloop didn’t do anything wrong at all. We just wanted to make sure that you know everything that’s out there. We’ve heard from one of Uloop’s campus reps, who is an avid reader, and he says that he loves working for them.
Now for the internships. Uloop is looking for a Software Development Intern in Mountain View, CA. They’re also always looking for Local Sales Reps and On-Campus Marketing Reps. These aren’t technically internships, but they’re great on-campus job opportunities for college students. It’s easy to apply online, so do some more research on Uloop, and see if an internship or rep job is right for you.
