Back before cell phones got all fancy and digital service just meant that you were able to send and receive text messages, I thought that it was important to have a dual band phone – analog and digital. I was often off fishing in rural areas where digital cell service was nonexistent, so I figured that it was better to have crappy service than no service. Although we’ve mostly moved into the digital age of cell phones, there are still all types of different cellular networks that require different frequencies and hardware to operate on. Vanu is a Cambridge, MA based company that is building a software based radio access network. What does that mean? Instead of requiring cellular providers to invest in new hardware for every network that they operate on, they can use one piece of a single reusable hardware platform to operate on multiple networks. Although the science behind this is way over our heads, we think that it sounds pretty slick.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Vanu seems like the type of company that might have a ton of technical internships, but nothing for those who don’t have an Engineering degree. The opposite is actually true. Vanu is currently recruiting for two internships in Marketing, but they have no technical offerings right now. The are looking for a Marketing Communications Intern and a Marketing Analyst Intern. The former is targeted towards those in an undergraduate business program, and the latter is targeted towards MBA students (but we encourage non-MBAs who are self-confident to apply). These are part time internships (10-15 hours per week) in Vanu’s Cambridge office, and there is no mention about whether or not they are paid. You can find all the details on Vanu’s Internships page You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@vanu.com. If Vanu sounds great to you, but you’d like to work in a more technical internship, why not try cold calling? They might just offer you an internships that would make any engineer’s heart skip a beat – we don’t know what kind of internships Vanu offers at other times during the year.
