Almost all of are here (in the United States) because of immigration. Whether it was you, your parents, your grandparents, or a passenger on The Mayflower, someone in your family decided that he or she wanted a better life and left a lot behind to come here. How long you’ve been here doesn’t really matter. What does matter is what you’re going to do while you’re here; however, being new to the country brings a lot of challenge. Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians is a Philadelphia, PA based non-profit that “connects newly arrived individuals from around the world with the economic opportunities that they need to succeed.” The Center has been around for a decade now, and in that time they’ve helped more than 8,000 people from well over 100 countries.

You’re Welcome!

When you’re in the midst of a job search (especially when you’re looking for your first job), it’s easy to see immigration as a bad thing. You’re already here, yet they (the government) are letting new people in to compete with you for those precious few entry level jobs. However, economic research shows that population growth drives economic growth, and immigration speeds that up considerably when you consider that a newborn baby typically takes more than 20 years to start contributing much in terms of productivity. I completely agree with Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians’ belief that “a steady influx of new customers, workers, and entrepreneurs can reinvigorate Pennsylvania’s aging population, renew its neighborhoods, and re-energize our economy.” And that’s why I think that the services that they offer are so important–they get new immigrants participating in the economy as quickly as possible. If you’d like to help make that happen, take a look at Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians’ Jobs page. While they don’t mention internships, they do have a few “Volunteer Opportunities” that look a lot like internships to me. They include English or GED Tutor, Bilingual Small Business Outreach Assistant, and Graphic Designer. These are obviously unpaid.
