This is a sponsored post. We’ve worked directly with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to bring you the inside scoop on their internships.

People say “I’m not a rocket scientist” for a reason, right? You have to be really smart and work really hard to be that guy or girl who is supposed to have the answer to every question, because, well, you’re a rocket scientist. Now, what if you actually want to be a rocket scientist? Or a rocket engineer? What if you want to be an aviator who flies whatever comes after the space shuttle? Where do you start? Space camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, of course. Whether you’re looking to sign up as a camper or you’re a college student who is looking for internships, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is a great place to start building the education and experience that you’ll need to have a successful career in the Space industry.

Ready for Liftoff

Most of what the U.S. Space & Rocket Center does is focused on running their camp programs, which include Space Camp, Aviation Challenge, and X-Camp. In each of these programs they teach science, math, and technology through the lens of the space program. In addition to the camp programs, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center also runs a museum at their location in Huntsville, AL. Ok, this kind of sounds like school, but I can assure you that Space Camps is way more fun than school. I mean, how can any place that has SpaceShot, a G-Force Accelerator, an Apollo Cockpit Trainer, and a Mars Climbing Wall not be fun? To take a more in-depth look at what kind of excitement there is for campers and counselors at Space Camp, check out SpaceCamp.com along with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s YouTube videos.

Accept the Mission

So, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center needs to hire 50 counselors for Space Camp who can begin work in January. Counselors at Space Camp typically teach hands on activities such as rocket builiding, train campers to be able to successfully complete their simulated space shuttle missions, and build leadership and teamwork skills through daily activities like AR51. You can find all of the details of the job on the Team Counselor job description and in the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s Counselor Employment Information Manual. Interns / Counselors not only get to have all of the fun of being at camp all day, but they also are assigned a mentor and a project to complete in the time that they at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. For example, an Engineering intern might work with one of the Center’s simulators to design and implement new activities the participants can use during their missions. The internship portion of the Counselor program is offered to students from all kinds of majors, but they are mainly focused toward students with a background in Engineering, Education, or the hard sciences.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center has a few requirements of applicants for their Team Counselor program, so make sure that you have completed at least 30 college credit hours, are at least 20 years old, and have some experience working with children or young adults before you apply. You should also, obviously, be interested in space and aviation; however, you don’t need to have a specific college major to be accepted into the program. If you meet all of these requirements, get together 2 letters of recommendation, your most recent school transcript, and apply online to be a Team Counselor at Space Camp.

If you’re accepted, you’ll get intensive training starting on January 7, 2009 (even the training is paid), room and board, supplemental medical insurance, uniforms, paid time off, and a chance to get to go back to camp. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is located in Huntsville, AL, so you’ll also get to spend a good portion of the winter in a warmer climate. The internships will run through May or even August, because the U.S. Space & Rocket Center operates all year round, so go apply now.

Space Camp at Huntsville was a memorable experience…. I was part of the 2007 group to Space Camp, Huntsville and i remember every moment of it. The way we build and launched our own rockets, how scared i was to attempt the Multi Axle Simulator, spending hours trying to solve maths and science problem and so on. It was an amazing experience. Since I had always been interested in Space I had read about these training programmes in books. But to do it live was completely enthralling. I have learnt a lot on my brief trip to Huntsville. In case any other child shares the same passion as mine for space, he/she must try out Space Camp once.
