As a Yankees fan I am obliged to hate anything and everything related to the Red Sox—and even Boston sports in general. That’s why it pains me to cover NESN (New England Sports Network) today. They’re one of the most successful regional sports networks (RSNs) in the country ratings-wise (#1 for 6 straight years), and they do it in the 7th biggest media market. NESN is jointly owned by the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins, whom they cover along with the Celtics, Patriots, and plenty of local college teams. They were launched in 1984, which makes Watertown, MA based NESN one of the oldest RSNs in the country, and they now reach more than 4 million homes. I still don’t understand why anyone would want to watch Boston sports on tv.

Monster Opportunities

Obviously I think that internships at the Yes Network are way cooler, but I do have to admit that working at NESN would be pretty sweet. There probably couldn’t be a better place for a Boston sports fan (must… hold… back… joke…) with an interest in television than NESN. They have a “40,000 square foot state-of–the art facility” and they do a ton of broadcasting in HD. The only thing they were short on this year was October programming. If you’re interested in NESN, you should check out their Internships page. They’re currently offering unpaid internships in New Media (NESN.com), SportsDesk, Sales & Traffic, Promotions, Program Development & Acquisitions, and Boston Bruins Pre and Post Game Show. All seem like pretty cool opportunities, so I hope that you’ll check out NESN. Maybe you can help them broadcast another Red Sox collapse next fall.

I have to admit that I pretty much stopped watching local news after going to school and living in Central New York for four years. I swear that every night the news would come on at 11 PM, and there would be a new crew reporting live from a barn that caught on fire. Here in Chicago it’s more likely to be a shooting or possibly some government corruption. I’m sure that your area has its own regular story. Usually I like to talk about how the Internet is kicking traditional media’s butt, but that hasn’t been true when it comes to local stuff. TV and newspapers still own the local market, which is why NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago would be pretty cool places to intern. (Telemundo is a local network much like NBC 5 Chicago, but it’s tailored to a Spanish speaking audience.)They’re still the place to go for local news (whether it’s on the web or on the tube).

Intern Locally… If You’re in Chicago

I recently came across the Internships page for NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago and was impressed by how many opportunities they are offering. The only thing that bugged me is that they stick a bunch of legalese in the first few paragraphs instead of using the space to tell you how awesome the internship program is. I guess they want to make it painfully clear that their internships are unpaid and only for current students at accredited college. They’re also adamant about the fact that interns can’t do certain work because of union contracts.

With all that said, there are still a ton of cool opportunities including internships in: Advertising and Promotion (NBC and Telemundo), Station/Community Relations (NBC), Digital Sales, Consumer Unit (NBC), Health Unit (NBC), Investigative Unit (NBC), National Business Development (NBC), NBC Network News Midwest Bureau, News Assignment Desk (NBC or Telemundo), News Department (NBC or Telemundo), News Planning Unit (NBC or Telemundo), Sales Research and Marketing (NBC), Sports Department (NBC), Web Development Department (NBC), and NBCChicago.com Editorial Department (NBC). There are 4 internship sessions per year at NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago. There’s a PDF application form that you need to fill out and mail in, so check out the NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago Internships page for all of the details.

Considering that we covered some PR/Communications internships yesterday, the name of today’s company may make it seem like we’re not providing you with variety. That’s not true at all. Fisher Communications is not a PR firm. They’re “a Seattle-based communications company that owns or manages 13 full power, 7 low power television stations and 8 radio stations.” When they say communications, they mean over radio signals. If you’ve always wanted a career in tv or radio, you probably know that it’s best to start local. If you can land an internship at a major national network, that’s great, but it isn’t easy. It’s not like getting an internship with a local company like Fisher Communications is easy either, but it’s definitely more attainable.

Fish-er for Internships

I don’t know a lot about Fisher’s tv and radio stations because I don’t live in Washington. If you’re from Washington, you’ll probably have a decent idea of what they’re about, and if you’re not, you can research the stations individually. Right now Fisher Communications is recruiting Fall interns for three tv stations and one radio station. At KBAK TV/KBFX TV in Bakersfield, CA, they’re looking for unpaid interns in News (General News, Sports, and Weather) and Promotions. At KOMO TV in Seattle, they have unpaid internships in Creative Services and TV Sales (Advertising). At KUNS, which is also in Seattle, they’re looking for unpaid interns in TV Sales (Advertising) and Bilingual News. Finally, there are a number of Seattle based radio internships in News, Programming, Graphic Design, Promotion, and Sales. The application instructions for each position vary, so be sure to check out the individual descriptions to get all of the details.

If you’ve been reading for more than about a week, you’ve probably noticed that we spend a lot of time using social media to find exciting internships for you. It’s still not the best way to find employment opportunities, but it’s certainly the most interesting and the most engaging. Just look at Revision3, the Internet TV station. They’re blogging (and their Interns are blogging, and their interns have their own blogs too), Twittering, YouTubing, Digging, Flickring (Interns on Flickr too), and Facebooking, of course. They’re probably doing a lot more too. Revision3 is an Internet startup, so they kind of have to embrace social media, but the vast amount of information that they provide about themselves is an amazing recruiting tool. If you have any interest in working at Revision3, you’ll find everything that you need to get you even more excited about sending them an internship application. Since you can dive into Revision3′s social media profile yourself, we’re going to give you a quick rundown of the Fall internships that they’re offering and let you continue the rest of the research on your own.

TV on the Internet

In case you didn’t grasp it the first time we said it, Revision3 is a tv station on the Internet. They create and produce their own original, broadcast quality shows. They love user-generated content as much as the next guy or girl, but it’s not what they’re about. They’re looking for Fall 2008 interns and possibly interns for next Spring or Summer too. Revision3 offers internships in Production, Studio, Web, Marketing, and Distribution. If you have a background in Broadcast, Journalism, Marketing, Business, Communication, Computer Science or Engineering you’ll probably be a good fit, but don’t let your History major hold you back from applying. Internships are typically 3 months long and require at least 12-40 hours per week of work. Revision3 is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and accepts resumes and cover letters at interns@revision3.com. We’re pretty sure the internships are paid, but we’re not 100% positive on that. We’ll bet that someone from Revision3 will find this post and give us a definite answer.

Great timing for this one. The Houston Astros are 37-42 and just released a player for choking their General Manager. Still, they are a Major League Baseball team, and they have a ton of Fall internships available. Despite the rough times that the team is going through, we doubt that they’ll have any effect on the quality of the internships experience. There are few internships more desirable than those with professional sports teams.

Apply Today for a Fall Internship with the Astros

Why do we use that headline? Because the deadline for Fall internship applications is today! That means that we’re going to keep it short and sweet so that you can find the information that you need and get an application in before the end of the day.

Here’s what you need to know. The Astros offer internships in Customer Service, Graphic Design, Ballpark Entertainment, Finance, Human Resources, Media Relations, Market Development – Bilingual, Conference Center/Tours, Marketing, Ticket Operations, Community Development, and Broadcasting/Promotions. These are all located in Houston, TX. You can get detailed descriptions about each internship here. The internships are unpaid, unless you win the Houston Astros Internship Scholarship. That’s all you need to know. Now, go apply!

I was blessed to grow up in Chicago during a time when the Bulls were the most dominant sports team in the world. I was crazy about each and every player on the team, but was especially obsessed with BJ Armstrong. Now, I know that you may be thinking that BJ is a funny choice, given the more obvious picks of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the likes, but there was something about BJ’s work ethic and drive that made me fall in love with him. So when I saw him eating dinner at a restaurant near my house, I could hardly contain myself. Now imagine yourself eating dinner everyday next to your favorite Olympic heroes. As an intern at the U.S. Olympic Committee you could do just that, plus breakfast and lunch.

The United States Olympic Committee, aka USOC, conducts a summer internship program for college Sophomores and Juniors. The internship sites are in Colorado Springs, Colo., Lake Placid, N.Y., and Chula Vista, Calif. Positions are either with the USOC or within an individual sport National Governing Body (i.e., Archery, Swimming, Volleyball, etc.). Interns receive a small stipend in addition to free meals in the Athletes’ Dining Hall.

The program offers internships in the areas of: broadcasting, journalism, marketing, sports administration, culinary nutrition and sport science (strength and conditioning or training/performance). To apply, you must fill out an official application and attach a resume and an official grade transcript. To receive an official application, visit the USOC internship webpage, and send an email to the contact listed at the bottom.

Did you know that the olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, is Latin for “Faster, Higher, Braver,” but is universally accepted to mean “Swifter, Higher, Stronger?” Do you also know that we offer great job seeking advice on our One Day, One Job Online Job Search Blog?
