It’s story time today! Let’s go back three years to when I was still job searching. I was getting extremely frustrated with the recruitment process, and I was starting to think about how I could make online job search better. Beyond my typical job searching, I was reading everything that I could about the online recruitment industry. I was generating new ideas, and trying to find a way in so that other job searchers wouldn’t have to go through what I went through. I took an especially strong interest in Indeed, not only because they provide an excellent job search engine, but also because they were an innovative and successful startup located in Stamford, CT—just 20 minutes from where I was living at the time (they also have an office in Austin, TX). They were still small, and they didn’t really have any job postings that were suitable for me, so I e-mailed the CEO. I told him why I wanted to work for him and what I thought that I could bring to the table. It worked, and I got an interview (going straight to the top is an underrated job search method). After clearing the phone screen, I got invited to the office to meet with some people on the team, and, to my surprise, that included the CEO whom I had e-mailed my initial “cover letter” to. The interview was kind of a disaster. It went well at first, but I had already started working on One Day, One Job, and telling a potential employer that you’re starting a company in the same space isn’t typically a good idea. I didn’t get offered the job (nor did they ever formally reject me), but I think it all ended up for the better.

Yes, Indeed

Indeed’s business model looks a lot like Google’s. Scour the Internet for information, organize that information in a coherent fashion, and spit it back to users in a relevant way with ads mixed in with the content. While Google does it for everything, Indeed only focuses on jobs. You probably already know all about Indeed, because if you’re job searching and not coming across Indeed at least occasionally, you’re either not searching very hard or using an ultra targeted, networking approach (which I approve of highly). If you don’t have a problem with getting meta about your internship search by looking for a position at a job search company, then take a look at internships at Indeed. They have a bunch of opportunities, and a number of them are either listed as internships or described as such. The one definitive internship is for a Sales Intern at the Stamford office, while there are a number of positions in Austin, TX with descriptions saying they’re looking for a current student. These include positions like Country Marketing Associate – Native Australian, Country Marketing Associate – Native Canadian, Country Marketing Associate – Native Spanish, and Marketing Associate. I’m still a fan of Indeed, even if they didn’t offer me a job, so go see if you can do better than I did with them. There’s no word on whether the positions are paid, but my guess is that they are.

I have a good friend from Cornell who has been working in the world of education since he graduated with me in 2006. He often sends me recommendations of companies that I should feature, and I’ve actually covered quite a few of them. Earlier this week he sent me a note about Achievement First, a New Haven, CT based non-profit organization that manages charter schools across Connecticut and New York. (Sidenote: Having a friend like mine who is super-connected and aware in a particular industry or area can be huge for your job search.) Achievement First got its start in 1998 when a group of founders got together with the goal of creating a public charter school. They succeeded, and the result was Amistad Academy—and it’s been an amazing result. Over the past 7 years, Amistad Academy students have beat state averages in reading and math on the Connecticut Mastery Tests. In 2003 they built on this success by making Achievement First a separate entity to take the lessons learned from Amistad Academy and spread them throughout the region. Since then Achievement First “has grown into a network that includes 17 academies under nine charters in four cities.”

What Can You Achieve?

The success of Achievement First’s schools has proven that “demographics aren’t destiny.” Urban students can achieve at the same levels as affluent suburban students given the right environment. Achievement First is all about providing these environments. I think that the results speak for themselves. If you’re passionate about education and want to be a part of what Achievement First is doing, then you need to check out their Jobs and Internships page. Right now they’re looking for IT Summer Interns in both New York and Connecticut. Additionally they have a Summer Teaching Fellows Program; however, the deadline for that has passed, so you’ll need to think about it for next year. I’m surprised there isn’t any information on other types of internships, but there’s nothing stopping you from inquiring about those possibilities.

I swear that half of all college students want to work in sports and entertainment. Unfortunately most of the job and internship postings you’ll find in those industries are actually scam internships. Getting a position at a legitimate sports and entertainment company is not easy, but with AEG you have a shot. They call themselves “one of the leading sports and entertainment presenters in the world,” and although that sounds broad, it’s a good description. AEG operates in a number of business areas including Facilities, Sports (Teams and Events), Music (Events), and Merchandising. They own/control arenas like the STAPLES Center, Conseco Fieldhouse, and the Prudential Center, while also owning professional sports teams like the LA Kings and Los Angeles Galaxy (can you tell that AEG is based in Los Angeles?). They’ve also “promoted tours by artists including Britney Spears, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Christina Aguilera & Justin Timberlake, The Dixie Chicks, Yanni, Paul McCartney, Usher, Kanye West, Prince, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi, Nickelback, and PopTarts Presents American Idol.” And that’s not even half of it. AEG is a major player in sports and entertainment, and a great place to start a career.

Join AEG’s Team

Describing AEG’s business in a few paragraphs isn’t easy, so I guess that the best way to put it is that if it has to do with sports or entertainment, they’re probably involved in some way. That means that AEG offersinternship opportunities in a wide variety of areas. They actually have a halfway decent job search function on their site, so you can narrow things down by AEG Company, Area of Interest, Location, or Facility—they also let you sort the jobs so that you only see internships. Right now they have 18 internships posted in areas like Communications, Community Relations, Graphic Design, Hispanic Grassroots Marketing, Charitable Foundations, Sales & Marketing, Marketing, Mascot Marketing, Player Development, Premium Services, Special Events, Sponsorships, Production, Public Relations, Sales & Marketing, Ticket Operations, Video Production, and Youth Development. All of these positions appear to be unpaid, and you can apply for any that you find on their site through their online application process.

I have no idea how I’ve made it through nearly two years of posts on One Day, One Internship without featuring ESPN. I covered ESPN’s entry level jobs on One Day, One Job, but never took the time to look at their internship program. As you probably know, ESPN is the “worldwide leader in sports.” They’re a huge media company with multiple television stations, a magazine, and an enorous web presence—they also have branded restaurants. When it comes to sports coverage, there’s no competition; ESPN is king. They also have an amazing employment brand not only because they offer jobs and internships in sports, but also because of their awesome commercials that take place in their Bristol, CT office. I have to imagine that internships at ESPN are some of the most sought after internships out there.

Intern at ESPN

Looking for internships on ESPN’s website feels like a wild goose chase. Luckily, I’ve found the goose that laid the golden egg—if you consider an internship with ESPN a golden egg. Ok, it’s not as bad as ESPN’s Careers site used to be, but the problem is that they leave their old Careers sites up (there’s even one from 2002 that is still accessible). The site that comes up first in Google when you search for “ESPN internships” is not the site that you want to be on. ESPN’s new Careers site is ESPNCareers.com. This includes a section on Internships that is actually quite helpful—ESPN’s former Careers site was terrible. This page gives you a broad overview of the program:

Internships are offered in the fall and spring semesters and during the summer

Opportunities are primarily located in Bristol, CT and New York, NY. Limited opportunities are available at other locations, including Los Angeles.

10 weeks – 40 hours a week

Competitive pay

Subsidized housing is available on a first come first served basis for interns in New York, NY and Bristol, CT for students who live more than 40 miles from the ESPN offices in those locations

It also says that they offer internships in the following areas: Creative Services, Communications, Digital Media, Editorial, Finance & Accounting, International, Marketing, Production, Programming, Research, Sales, Statistics, and Information Technology. From there you’ll find a link to ESPN’s actual internship listings. The postings are all from the last month, so now is the perfect time to apply for an internship at ESPN. You can apply online, and you should note that their actual opportunities go beyond the categories and locations that I mentioned earlier.

One thing that I find really exciting is the fact that there are cool startups popping up all across the country. Yes, Silicon Valley and the Pacific Northwest are still the primary places for technology focused companies to open up shop, but that’s becoming less and less true. That’s why I was intrigued by Fanzter—they’re web products company based in Collinsville, CT. Considering the fact that I’m from Connecticut and have never heard of Collinsville (it’s near Hartford), you have to consider it an unusual location for a startup (they would tell you it’s optimally located between Boston and New York City). Fanzter’s first (and only current) product is called Coolspotters. It’s a website that “makes it easy to discover and buy the products, brands, and fashions being used by your favorite celebrities – in their real lives, and in movies and television.” It reminds me a lot of what Delivery Agent is doing.

Spot These Cool Internships

The business behind Coolspotters is pretty clear—their content can flow seamlessly into e-commerce. Coolspotters relies heavily on user-generated content, so the site can grow organically on it’s own. To get a feel for Coolspotters, let’s take a look at Joba Chamberlain (go Yankees!). His profile page will show you products that he’s been spotted with including a picture of him with the product. I see a picture of Joba playing Guitar Hero, and then I can go buy my own Guitar Hero. There are still a lot of kinks to be worked out on Coolspotters’ site (like having Mariano Rivera’s picture for C.C. Sabathia), but the concept is there and so is the funding. Right now, Fanzter’s Internships page shows two opportunities: Technology Intern and Editorial Intern. Both look great, and I’m pretty sure that they’re paid. You can apply for an internship with Fanzter by sending a cover letter and résumé to jobs@fanzter.com.

Yesterday I told you about TechnoServe and all of the good that they’re doing by spreading entrepreneurism. Mercado Global is taking a similar approach to fighting poverty, but they’re doing it with a very specific focus. They are a New Haven, CT based non-profit organization “that links the world’s most rural and economically-disadvantaged cooperatives to the U.S. market through a model that provides both fair wages and investments in community’s long-term development.” Even more specifically, they focus on working with women who produce handmade products. So, not only is Mercado Global creating positive change in the developing world, but they’re also providing you with shopping opportunities.

Go to the Mercado

Here’s a pretty cool stat from Mercado Global: on average their sales triple the income of their partner artisans. When you multiply this income increase across their 360 artisans and their 2,100 dependents, you get a whole lot of social change. The best part is that a lot of that money goes directly to education—exactly what is needed to end the cycle of poverty. If you love the idea of what Mercado Global is doing, you should buy something from them—or consider an internship. They don’t have a Jobs or Internships page on their site, but they do post opportunities on Idealist. Right now they have a number of unpaid positions posted including Fundraising Program Intern, Sales & Marketing Intern, and Jewelry Training and Design Fellow. Apparently these positions are available in either Guatemala or New Haven and the last day to apply for the currently posted internships is tomorrow. Get to it!

As an entrepreneur I am a strong believer that businesses are often the best way to solve problems. Don’t get me wrong—I love non-profits, but the ruthlessness of the business world breeds efficiency and effectiveness. We’ve seen plenty of non-profits try to cure poverty, yet poverty remains one of the world’s biggest problems. Lately we’ve seen more and more business based solutions aimed at eradicating poverty. TechnoServe, is a non-profit (the irony!) that is doing just that. They help “entrepreneurial men and women in poor areas of the developing world to build businesses that create income, opportunity and economic growth for their families, their communities and their countries.” What they’re doing may sound like some new social entrepreneurship startup, but they have a 40 year track record of successfully transforming the lives of the world’s poor. I guess business based solutions to poverty aren’t a new idea at all.

TechnoServing Up Some Exciting Internships

When I first heard the name TechnoServe, I imagined some sort of technology related non-profit; however, that’s not what they are at all. In fact, what TechnoServe does could be considered quite basic. They’re helping people do what other people have been doing for thousands of years—building sustainable businesses. Last year they helped 1,350 businesses generate $149 million in total sales, while in the process touching the lives of 1.2 million people. TechnoServe does this through three key practices: Developing Entrepreneurs, Building Businesses and Industries, and Improving the Business Environment. Over the years they’ve expanded to more and more countries, so they now cover: Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and India. Their U.S. based offices are in Norwalk, CT and Washington, DC (where most of their internships are located). If you take a look at their Internships page, you’ll see that they have four opportunities posted right now: Africa Division Intern, Latin America Division Intern, Volunteer Consultant Program Intern, and Marketing and Communications Intern. The internship descriptions are quite detailed and the application instructions vary, so check out the individual postings.

Yesterday I was amused by a friend’s Facebook status that said: “just had a revelation: Obama sounds like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.” I instantly imagined Barack Obama shirtless, yelling into a microphone, “Do you smellllllllllll what Barack is cooking?” Apparently SNL had a similar idea. That got me thinking about WWE (formerly the WWF), where The Rock first became famous. I was never a huge fan of professional wrestling, but I must admit to having watched on occasion. My little sister, on the other hand, was a huge fan. At about six years old she decided to be Hulk Hogan for Halloween. It was priceless. Back then they were the WWF, but a spate with World Wide Fund for Nature in 2000 resulted in a lawsuit and eventually a name change. WWE is located in Stamford, CT, just 20 minutes or so from my home town, and is a billion dollar business. Unfortunately, they haven’t been immune to layoffs, but they seem to have some great job opportunities right now.

Body Slam Your Way into an Internship

One thing that surprised me when I started doing research on World Wrestling Entertainment was the fact that they aim for a PG rating with all of their content. They put a huge emphasis on being family friendly because kids are such a huge part of their fan base. This philosophy runs throughout WWE’s five business units: Live and Televised Entertainment, Consumer Products, Digital Media, WWE Studios, and Sales & Sponsorships. If you’ve always loved professional wrestling and think that an internship with WWE would be action packed, then you need to check out WWE’s Careers site. Right now they only have one internship posted: Music Intern (New York City); however, I’d bet that they offer more internships in the summer. They did have a Fall Editorial Internship in 2007 that was paid, so that may mean that WWE typically pays interns. There’s surprisingly little information available online about the WWE Internship Program, so you might want to do some more research to see if there are any unadvertised opportunities.

My first introduction to William Shatner was watching Rescue 911. Little did I know that his body of work extended far beyond narrating a show about real life heroes. I imagine today’s children will have an equally narrow view of William Shatner’s career, as they’ll know him as “Priceline Negotiator.” (Can you read those words without hearing the corresponding tune? I can’t.) Anyway, the whole idea behind William Shatner’s newest role – besides his doing the commercials in return for stock – is that Priceline.com will negotiate the best deals on travel-related items like hotels, car rentals, and airline tickets. They also have a “name your own price” model that used to be the core of their business, but now Priceline has widened its focus to discount travel in general.

Internship Negotiator

Don’t you wish you had someone like William Shatner to negotiate your internship for you too? Ok, that’d be a little weird. Sometimes learning negotiating skills is better than having someone do the dirty work for you. I think that I’m glad that the way we find jobs and internships online is different from the way that we find travel deals online. With that said, you can go to the same place for both if you’re interested in an internship in travel or e-commerce. Priceline.com has a ton of Summer internship opportunities available right now. You can find all of their listings on their Jobs and Internships page including internships in Datawarehouse, IT Engineering, IT Network Engineering, Content Management, Public Relations, and Hotels. From there, you’ll be able to apply online. All of the internships at Priceline.com are located at their headquarters in Norwalk, CT, and there’s no mention of whether they’re paid or not.

After I graduated from college, I decided to take a responsible approach to my personal finances (and I wish I had done it sooner, so all of you current students listen up). It took me a while to get my act together, but once I did I started investing in the stock market through Scottrade, an online discount brokerage company that is headquartered in St. Louis, MO. (And before I go on with more information about Scottrade’s jobs, I need to give Ramit Sethi’s book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, a plug because it just came out and is the best personal finance resource for young people that I’ve come across.) So, Scottrade allows me to buy and sell stocks at 7 bucks a pop. They also have a solid web interface that gives you access to all kinds of information, and they have 399 branches with helpful employees to answer you questions and get your accounts opened. If you’re interested in opening an account with Scottrade, let me know at willy@onedayonejob.com and I can give you a link that gets us both free trades. If you’re interested in interning with Scottrade, keep reading, duh!

Trade Up to an Internship with Scottrade

Now, you may be thinking, “Ummm… Willy, the stock market sucks right now, why would I want to get involved with that business?” There are quite a few reasons. First of all, Scottrade is growing at an excellent rate, which is why they were included in the Inc. 5000. Second of all, they’re not one of these big banks that is on the edge of failure. They’re a discount brokerage that focuses on customer satisfaction, not playing with money in risky ways. Third of all, they’ve been named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For. Oh yeah, and the 4th reason is that their internships were named by Inc. Magazine as one of America’s Coolest Internships. Yeah, so they have awesome internships.

Scottrade’s Internships page is very nicely done, and it gives a clear picture of what the program is all about. It then feeds right into their Internship listings, which are extensive. There are internships at their St. Louis headquarters in Internal Audit, Public Relations, and Infrastructure Technical Writing. Additionally they have internships at many of their branch offices for Finance/Economics students. Right now those listings are in locations that include: Birmingham, AL; Hoover, AL; Pasadena, CA; Woodland Hills, CA; Stamford, CT; Naples, FL; Ft. Wayne, IN; Overland Park, KS; Louisville, KY; Rockville, MD; Bethesda, MD; Minneapolis, MN; Kansas City, MO; Las Vegas, NV; Milburn, NJ; Rochester, NY; Valley Stream, NY; York, PA; Chattanooga, TN; Austin, TX; Burlington, VT; Arlington, VA; Williamsburg, VA; Richmond, VA; Green Bay, WI; Thousand Oaks, CA; Redding, CA; Folsom, CA; Oviedo, FL; and Huntington Beach, CA.

It’s pretty cool that Scottrade offers internships in so many locations that typically wouldn’t have many internship opportunities available. The internships all appear to be paid, and you can apply for them all online.

How’s the relationship between your college or university and the town or city that it’s in? Let me guess. Not so hot. It always seems that students and “townies” don’t get along too well. Beyond that, there can also be situations like at Yale in New Haven, CT where the students are generally much wealthier than the people who live in the surrounding neighborhood. This just exacerbates the fundamental gap between the university and the community. National Student Partnerships is a non-profit organization that was started in New Haven by two Yale students who wanted to close this gap. They “designed a program where college student volunteers work one-on-one with community residents, coordinating access to employment opportunities and social services, including job training, housing, health care, child care, and transportation.” It’s a wonderful idea, and it’s working – look at the success stories.

Become a Part of NSP

In a lot of ways college students are an untapped resource. They generally have a lot of free time, a lot of energy, and a lot of brains – they’re just lacking a bit when it comes to “real world” experience. Putting them to work whether it be an internship or a volunteer program like NSP just makes sense. Additionally, college students are our future, which is why “NSP seeks to unite a national movement of students dedicated to direct service now, so that the systemic challenges we inherit do not become ones we will pass on.” Beyond offering volunteer opportunities, NSP also has some internships for college students. You can find the listings on NSP’s Internships page, and they include Summer Director positions in Baltimore, MD; Bronx, NY; Cambridge, MA; Chicago, IL; Evanston, IL; New Haven, CT; Philadelphia, PA (2 Offices); Pittsburgh, PA; Richmond, VA; Somerville, MA; Washington, DC, and General Internships in Washington, DC. You can find all of the details on the internships and how to apply on NSP’s Internships page.

This weekend my Dad e-mailed me about a company that had just moved to Connecticut (where I’m originally from). Connecticut has been working hard to attract the movie industry to the state – they even have what is called a “Hollywood East Task Force” in Hartford – so it’s big news when a company like Blue Sky Studios makes a move to Connecticut because they’ve been bribed by tax credits. It certainly brings a lot of jobs (and internships) to Connecticut (even though New York loses just as many.) As interesting as it is that Connecticut is trying to become “Hollywood East,” it’s not nearly as interesting as what Blue Sky Studios does. They “pioneer creatively superior photo-realistic, high-resolution, computer-generated character animation for the feature film, television and entertainment industries.” Put more simply, they’re behind feature films like Ice Age, Horton Hears a Who, and Robots, and some pretty cool shorts too.

Live in Blue Sky Country

If you want to work in Animation or Production, there are few, if any, better place to start than Blue Sky Studios. In fact, Blue Sky Country has a comprehensive FAQ on how to break into the industry. Whether you’re interested in a job with Blue Sky or at another animation house, this will tell you everything that you need to do (from high school all the way through college and beyond) to groom yourself to get a job in the Animation industry. That’s a great place to start, but if you’ve already checked off a few things on the list, then it might be time to take a look at Blue Sky Studios’ Internships (or to subscribe to their Jobs and Internships RSS feed). Blue Sky Studios has a Production Assistant Internship program that is already filled for the spring, but will need interns for the summer. Interns at Blue Sky Studios typically do “production database updates, spreadsheet generation, set-up of visual components for various meetings, scanning various forms of artwork, and taking notes during meetings and director rounds.” It’s an awesome opportunity to get hands on experience and to build relationships in the Animation industry. They offer both full and part-time internships, and full-time interns can work up to 40 hours per week in the summer (30 hours per week at other times of the year). There’s no mention of whether the internships are paid on Blue Sky’s site, but from what we’ve read elsewhere, it does seem that they pay interns. The application deadline for this summer is April 17th, so you have plenty of time to “email your resume, cover letter, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members at your institution to intern_resumes@blueskystudios.com.” Make sure that your resume includes your computer software knowledge and your cover letter does an excellent job of telling them why you wish to intern at Blue Sky and why they should award you the internship.

As we grow up and start looking for internships that will give us our first taste of the real world, we often fail to realize how easy we’ve had it. Although good grades and getting into college are important, almost all college students who are now looking for internships never had to worry about survival. It was a given. I’m sure that there are some of you reading who had very different experiences, but for most of you one of the biggest life “problems” is figuring out what you’ll do after you graduate. It’s easy to forget that there are millions of children in the world who live each day trying to survive. Save the Children is an international non-profit organization that focuses almost entirely on making the lives of children across the world better. They do so with a focus on 7 main areas: Economic Opportunities, Education, Emergencies, Protection, Health, Hunger and Malnutrition, and U.S. Literacy and Nutrition. Save the Children has spent the last 70 years fighting poverty’s effects on children through their unique self-help approach, and they’re not stopping any time soon.

Find an Internship, Save the Children

As you take the first step in figuring out what you’ll do with your life – getting an internship, you have a chance to do some serious good at the same time. An internship with Save the Children offers the opportunity to help others while you help yourself. They only have one internship opportunity right now, but there are certain to be more in the future. They need an intern for their Survive to 5 Program. It’s a depressing name (nobody likes to think that surviving to the age of 5 is difficult), but it’s a really important program. Save the Children is looking for someone who knows his or her way around the office and is very familiar with the Internet. There will be a lot of research work along with other tasks to support the project’s staff. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to cgrasso@savechildren.org. This internship is unpaid and located in Wesport, CT (the town in which I went to high school). If you’re interested in future internships with Save the Children, keep an eye on their Jobs and Internships postings.

John James Audubon loved painting birds. His seminal work, Birds of America, was a collection of 435 beautiful life-size prints. To this day, when you hear the name Audubon, you think of birds. Interestingly enough, John James Audubon had no direct involvement with the founding of the National Audubon Society. Audubon’s widow, Lucy, tutored a man named George Bird Grinnell and some of Audubon’s love of birds must have rubbed off, as Grinnell was one of the Audubon Society’s founders. To this day, the Audubon Society persists in its mission “to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity.” The Audubon Society works to achieve this mission through a national network of community-based nature centers and chapters and scientific, educational, and advocacy programs.

These Internships Are for the Birds

The National Audubon Society has a long list of current job and internship openings in a variety of locations across the country. We scanned over them, and identified all of the internships that appear to be available this fall. The Audubon does a great job of describing their internships, so you should get a good sense of the work involved with each.

We should also warn you that one job listing on the pagesays that the start date is in 2006. We hope that this is a result of a careless copy-paste job, but we have no way of knowing how recently all of these internships were posted (most of them look up to date though). We couldn’t find much information on what it’s like to work for Audubon, but it probably varies widely depending on location. If you’re a birder, and you’re looking for a non-profit Fall internship, figure out which of the above is most appealing and apply! The contact information varies depending on the internship, but you are expected to apply by e-mailing a cover letter and resume. Most of the internships are paid some sort of stipend or hourly wage, although the pay is very modest. A few of the other position listings seem to have no mention of whether they are paid or not.
