Everybody acts like social media and social networking is a new development, but it really isn’t. Even 15 years ago there was a web service that enabled you to create profiles, connect with friends, engage with communities, and communicate instantly or asynchronously. It was called Aol, and there’s a good chance that you used it. I feel bad for Aol. They had it all. They were the behemoth of the social web before anyone knew what the social web was, but they were too big and not agile enough. They continued to act like an ISP, and their market share eroded as people transitioned to high-speed connections. Today most people think of Aol as irrelevant, but the NYC based company is doing their best to make a comeback. The good news is that they aren’t living in the past. They’re not trying to win at social networking or being an ISP—they’ve repositioned. They now describe themselves as “a leading-edge web services company, with an offering of premium and niche content sites, world-class tools and platforms.” The focus is on content, and in some ways that’s what Aol was always about—making great content easy to access for the masses. The tough thing for Aol is that they’re already a huge company, so they’re going to have to swing for the fences if they want their new business model to work.

You’ve Got Mail!

The only reason that I actually decided to feature Aol today was because they have an amazing internship contest going on right now. It’s focused on their new Lifestream service which aggregates all of your social profiles in one place (apparently Aol hasn’t completely given up on social networking, but I think that they probably should). It’s not your typical internship, but it looks pretty awesome. It’s paid, you get direct access to Aol’s CEO Tim Armstrong, and you get some serious responsibility. Oh yeah, and the most important thing is that your main duty is to live an awesome life and share it through Lifestream. The only downside is that only one person can get it. You can find all of the details here. After looking at that opportunity, I decided to hit up Aol’s Career site and look through their job openings for internships and co-ops (which you can search for specifically). Of Aol’s 749 vacancies, 36 are for internships. I won’t go through each one, but they’re offered in areas like Editorial, Customer Service, Software Development, Customer Service, Finance, Advertising, Sales, Travel, Music, Media/Content, Information Technology, Real Estate, and more. They don’t mention whether most of the positions are paid or not, but the large majority are in New York City with a bunch in the Dulles, VA area and a few scattered across Lancaster, PA; Atlanta, GA; San Francisco, CA; Baltimore, MD; Denver, CO; and other locations.

Not many of the companies on Fast Company’s list of “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” are non-profit, and not many non-profits generate over $1 billion in annual revenue, but MITRE fits both criteria. I know that many of you want to see fewer technical internships, but I’ve also noticed that most of the non-profit internships that we feature on weekends aren’t very technical. MITRE, which has headquarters in Bedford, MA and McLean, VA offers an exception. They are an “organization chartered to work in the public interest” through “expertise in systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts, and enterprise modernization.” They do this work through “four Federally Funded Research and Development Centers,” with one focused on the Department of Defense, one on the Federal Aviation Administration, one on the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and one for the Department of Homeland Security.

Give MITRE a Try

MITRE serves each of these groups by providing “a unique combination of broad operational knowledge and in-depth technical skills” while also developing new technology that can be transferred when appropriate. What is really astonishing about MITRE is its size. They have over 7,000 employees, and more than 65% of them hold an advanced degree. The organization is a hotbed for technical knowhow and creativity, and it’s great to know that they have thousands of talented people working to ensure the future of our country. On that note MITRE is constantly looking to hire smart people for both technical and non-technical positions. They have a very strong college recruiting program, which you can find out about here. There are nearly 400 positions posted right now on MITRE’s Jobs site, so browsing through everything may be a little tough. However, they do let you search for Co-ops, Non-technical Internships, and Technical Internships (and 42 of the positions fall into one of these categories). If you have any questions, you can reach out to Jessica Yu using MITRE’s employee directory or you can use the chat box on the Student Opportunities page during working hours. I’m not 100% sure, but I think all of MITRE’s internship offerings are paid

Job/Internship categories at MITRE include: Acquisitions, Artificial Intelligence, Business Analysis & Administration, Communications, Computer Operations, Contracts/Subcontracts, Database Technology Software, Defense & Space Systems, Desktop Support, Digital/Microprocessor Hardware, Domain Operation Analyst, Economics/Business, Electromagnetic & Nuclear Effects, Facilities Engineering, Financial Analysis, General Accounting, General Systems Engineer, Graphics, Human Resources Generalist, Human Factors Engineer, Industrial Security, Information Security, Information Systems Engineer, Integrated Electronics, Legal, Multi-Disciplinary Systems Development, Networking & Distributed Systems, Physical Security, Procurement, Sensor Systems, Signal Processing Engineer, Software Applications Development & Software Systems, Special Security, System Administrator, Technical Project Support, Telecommunications Specialist, and Treasury & Risk Management. There are also a variety of locations beyond MITRE’s headquarters, so you’ll have plenty of options.

The way that large corporations operate often boggles my mind. Take for example my friend who worked in the internal consulting division of a massive, well-known company. Despite being owned and operated by the company, his division had to bid against outside consulting firms for projects. There was a good reason for this (it forced the internal consulting division to watch its back), but it still seems a bit ridiculous. Another example of this kind of thinking is transfer pricing (don’t worry, I had to look it up too). It’s the “pricing of contributions (assets, tangible and intangible, services, and funds) transferred within an organization.” At first it may seem that since all of the money is going to the same place pricing things that are transferred within an organization doesn’t really matter. Unfortunately, that would cause all of the accountants in an organization (and the IRS too) to have a fit. So how do companies price these transfers? There’s no external market to set the price, and trying to do it internally can get really messy. That’s when companies bring in Ceteris a “global independent consulting firm specializing in transfer pricing, intellectual property and valuation services” that is headquartered in Chicago.

Transfer Yourself to Ceteris

For most college students, grasping exactly what Ceteris does is pretty hard. The best way to get a feel for the kinds of projects that they work on is to take a look at examples of their work. It turns out that this stuff is pretty fascinating—at least to me. If you agree, you’ll want to check out Ceteris’ Careers page along with their Campus Recruiting page. Although they don’t explicitly post internship opportunities and they don’t have any campus events coming up, they say that they’re looking to hear from outstanding students with a background in Economics, Business, Accounting, Finance, Statistics, or Mathematics. You should note that Ceteris seems more focused on entry level hiring than on hiring interns, but I did find some mentions of internships in my Google searches. They invite interested applicants to send a résumé and cover letter to careers@ceterisgroup.com, so go after it and see what’s available. The company has only been around since 2003, but they’ve already expanded to 13 locations: Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Calgary, AB; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Libertyville, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Mexico City, Mexico; New York, NY; Salt Lake City, UT; Toronto, ON; Washington, DC; and Auckland, New Zealand. It’s not clear which offices have internship opportunities, but their Locations page does allow you to contact the head of each office if you’re so inclined.

As someone who has just tweeted his 5,000th tweet, I have to say that I’m getting a little sick of all the buzz about social media. It’s not that I don’t think tools like Twitter, Facebook, and blogs are valuable—if that was the case I wouldn’t be writing this right now—it’s just that too many people are forgetting that results, not tools, are most important. That’s why it’s cool to see a company like WeTheCitizens that is putting social media to work in a results-driven way. They’ve developed a platform to help “you recruit, mobilize, and track the effectiveness of your supporters.” Ok, YOU may not need something like that, but politicians, non-profit founders, and movie producers do. WeTheCitizens is an Atlanta based startup (with an office in DC) , and they’re going through a bit of an identity crisis right now (it’s not all that uncommon for startups). They’re very confident in their product—Wildfire Platform—but they’re apparently in the process of changing their name from WeTheCitizens to Mobilization Labs. To make it more confusing, a lot of the branding that they’re doing is for Wildfire Platform. If you can look past all of that, you’ll see a really cool company in its formative stages.

YouTheIntern

I could try to explain to you what Wildfire Platform does, but luckily I don’t have to. WeTheCitizens has a YouTube video on their home page that does just that, and I’ve embedded it below for you (e-mail and RSS readers should click through to view):

Apparently Wildfire Platform “has been tested and proven across non-profits, movies, and political campaigns, including gubernatorial, senatorial, and even U.S. Presidential.” I’d love to see a full-blown case study of a success story, but it doesn’t look like WeTheCitizens/Mobilization Labs has one up yet. For now, that video will have to sate your appetite for information on Wildfire Platform—at least until you reach out to the team at WeTheCitizens. Although they don’t have a Jobs or Internships page yet, they recently posted on their blog about Paid Post-College Internships.

I usually try to focus on internships for current college students here (and don’t be afraid to apply if you haven’t already graduated), but these internships look too cool not to share with you. WeTheCitizens is looking for people to help in areas like Sales, Social Media, Social Networking, Marketing, but they’re not tied down to any specific positions. They just want “smart, web-savvy college graduates looking to jump in and start making a difference in a small, fast-growing internet startup.” If that’s you, then e-mail your cover letter, résumé, and references to Esther Weathers at esther@wethecitizens.com by January 20th. You should also note that their blog post says: “We have multiple full-time positions we’re looking to fill that will open up at the end of the internship period. We’re pretty confident that the interns will get first dibs on those opportunities.” I basically see it as a temp or intern to hire arrangement—assuming you’d like a full-time job after 3 to 6 months.

Much to my girlfriend’s chagrin, I love watching fishing shows. I’d rather be out on the water, but when I’m trapped on the 30th floor in the middle of downtown Chicago and it’s -15 outside, there aren’t many other options. Unfortunately, ESPN has cut back on their fishing programming, and that doesn’t leave me with any other options on my cable package. If only we got Sportsman Channel, then I’d be much happier. They are “the only television network providing 100 percent hunting, shooting and fishing programming.” Unlike some other outdoor focused networks, they’re staying true to what they are instead of watering down their programming in hopes of better ratings. I haven’t had a chance to watch any of their programming, but I’m sure I’d like it. Sportsman Channel is based in New Berlin, WI, and they also have locations in New York, Denver, and Atlanta.

Tune In and Get Hooked

Sportsman Channel was launched in 2003, and they appear to be growing (they were purchased by a private equity firm that focuses on outdoor media in 2006). They have a huge market considering there are 82 million sportsmen in the United States, so you have to like their ability to grow a business based on targeted advertising. If you love the outdoors and want to work in tv or media, then it’d be hard to find a better place to intern than Sportsman Channel. Their location in Wisconsin is prime for the outdoors lifestyle, and I’m sure that they promote such a lifestyle for their employees too. If you’re interested, you can check out Sportsman Channel’s Jobs page, although it doesn’t include any internship postings—just a Résumé Submission form. I did, however, find this posting for a Research Intern. It’s a paid position, and they need someone immediately. I’d imagine that means that they’ll also have more internship opportunities open up in the future.

I love boring businesses. It may not seem like it considering the fact that I’m often featuring startups that are on the cutting edge of technology, but I really do appreciate when a company is able to take an extremely simple idea and make it profitable. Uline is a perfect example. They are a Waukegan, IL based company that considers itself “the leading distributor of shipping, industrial, and packing materials to businesses throughout North America.” It all started in 1980 when Liz and Dick Uihlein identified a need for a local shipping supplies distributer. They started the business in their basement with the H-101 carton sizer, and now they have a product line that fills a 452 page catalog. That’s a lot of growth, and I expect it to continue as e-commerce and the shipping that results from it keep expanding (I have about a dozen boxes in my apartment from various holiday season shipments). And if for some reason the shipping business does slow down, Uline can always reorganize as a producer of forts for children—I always loved playing in cardboard boxes.

Box It Up

Now, if you give Uline a closer look, there are some striking similarities between their business and our favorite fictional employer, Dunder Mifflin. They’re both customer service oriented companies that provide businesses with essential supplies; however, I’m going to make a wild guess that the similarities between Uline and Dunder Mifflin end there. Companies with dysfunctional leadership don’t have sustained growth, and Uline is growing so much that they broke ground on a new Pleasant Prairie, WI corporate headquarters last Fall. With that growth comes jobs, or American jobs as Uline likes to call them, and internships too. All of Uline’s internships appear to be paid, and they are offered in areas that include “marketing/merchandising, creative, warehouse, customer service, sales, finance, administration, technology and human resources.” You can find the specific internship postings by browsing Uline’s Jobs page, and you can apply for any of those positions online—just don’t try delivering yourself in a box to their corporate headquarters. That would be weird. Uline has locations in Ontario, CA (that’s California, not Canada—I know it’s confusing); Toronto, Canada; Duluth, GA; Waukegan, IL; Tijuana, Mexico; Eagan, MN; Allentown, PA; Coppell, TX; and Seattle, WA, and most of these offices have internships, so there’s more than just internships at their corporate headquarters.

If there’s ever a time for retail stores to be firing on all cylinders, it’s right now. Consumers are often very sensitive when it comes to making purchases, so it’s no surprise that a substandard retail experience can cost companies money. It may be an employee with a rotten attitude or a poorly laid out store. It could be that the employees are uninformed about the products that they’re selling or they may not be offering the promotions that they should be. Whatever it is, Louisville, CO based Market Force Information will find out. They’re “the leading customer experience information and insights partner for multi-location businesses.” Through their “integrated suite of mystery shopping, direct customer feedback, on-site merchandising and analytics services,” they can tell a company why one of their stores is underperforming or identify ways that all stores can improve.

Stay Informed

From what I’ve gathered, there are a number of companies that give the mystery shopping business a bad name by running scams—some have even used Market Force Information’s name illegally. As far as I can tell, Market Force Information is one of the most sophisticated companies in the industry (and they appear to be totally legit). They have developed a methodology for identifying key triggers that improve customer experience and drive sales. It’s not based on voodoo science but real research and statistical methods. While running a mystery shopping business is relatively simple, it’s all of the behind the scenes stuff that makes what Market Force Information does so interesting. If you’re intrigued by customer experience analytics, you should check out internships at Market Force Information. I’m sure they offer mystery shopping positions, but that’s not really what we’re interested in here. I’m more interested in the Sales and Marketing Internship that Market Force Information has listed. The internship description goes into great detail about what they’re looking for, but they don’t mention whether the position is paid or not. You can apply online, so go ahead and give Market Force Information a closer look.

You know you love tv commercials—at least good ones. Who doesn’t? They’re an art form. Just as much creative energy goes into the advertisements that pay for the shows you watch as goes into the actual shows. Well… not always, but often enough. How else are the advertisers going to keep you from ignoring their marketing messages? If you’ve ever wondered what the behind the scenes of creating television commercials looks like, you should check out Pogo Pictures. They’re “an Atlanta based film production company specializing in image branding & television commercial production.” They represent 4 award winning directors who have shot commercials for names like Bank of America, ACE Hardware, Ford, AT&T, Publix, Verizon, Kraft, Coke, Breyers, Comcast, Coca-Cola, SunTrust and Chevron. They’ve also worked with Departments of Tourism in many states and done commercials all across the world.

Bounce Your Way into an Internship

Chances are that you’ve seen quite a few commercials shot by Pogo Pictures, but you’d never know it because commercials don’t come with credits. I’d link to some of the work from Pogo’s directors—Angel Traverso, Steve Colby, Zach Freyer, and Ryan Smith—but the site is all in Flash, so we can’t link to it. You’ll just have to browse Pogo Pictures’ website yourself to get a full read on what they’re about. Anyway, someone from Pogo Pictures contacted me and told me about their internship program. They’re looking for someone ASAP, and I don’t believe they have this internship posted anywhere else. Here’s the rundown:

Pogo Pictures is looking for a motivated hardworking Fall intern to work with the company’s Office Coordinator, Executive Producer, and Director. The candidate should currently be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the current and/or upcoming semester. The internship is unpaid and requires 15 to 20 hours per week. Candidates will have the opportunity to be on set for local productions. Interested students are encouraged to send a cover letter and resume to info@pogopictures.com.

Yeah, it’s unpaid, but it sounds like some pretty cool experience. Go get it!

This is a guest post by Heather R. Huhman. Heather is the media relations manager at a national health care professional association and entry-level careers columnist for Examiner.com.

When I was in college, I wanted nothing more than to work at Fleishman-Hillard. Renowned for their corporate culture, Fleishman-Hillard is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., has 80 offices throughout the world, does business in more than 20 languages and has 29 practices areas. In 2008, the firm’s work and culture earned them the “Best Agency to Work For” by The Holmes Report. But their list of awards hardly stops there, including “103 Silver Anvil Awards, 90 CIPRA/SABRE Awards, and numerous other national and international awards.”

And Fleishman-Hillard doesn’t just win awards outside the organization, but also with its own employees. In 2007, 98 percent of Fleishman-Hillard employees called the firm an organization “of which they can be proud,” according to an employee satisfaction survey. Fleishman-Hillard rewards their employees in return, giving out two awards annually – the “team player” and John D. Graham – recognizing “individuals in various geographic regions for unparalleled commitment to the client, the agency and their team.” Managers also give awards at their discretion for “their heroic efforts.” I’ve known many individuals who’ve worked for Fleishman-Hillard over the years, including one of my college mentors, and I’ve heard nothing but good things.

Be Rewarded at an Award-Winning Agency

Fleishman-Hillard is always seeking good intern candidates, but they have strict rules about who may apply. You must have at least a B average and completed your junior year of undergraduate study, but recent graduates are preferred. You must also excel in writing, critical thinking and be committed to a career in public relations.

Interested? Application deadlines vary by location. For full details, check out the agency’s list of internship coordinators and program details. I also recommend reading their blog, Stand Out, and the biographies of some of the folks in charge of talent development. Internships with Fleishman-Hillard are typically offered at their offices in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Kansas City, MO; London, England; Los Angeles, CA; Melbourne, Australia; Miami, FL; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Montreal, Canada; New York, NY; Potland, OR; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Sacramento, CA; San Antonio, TX; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; St. Louis, MO; Sydney, Australia; Toronto, Canada, and Washington, D.C, and it appears that they typically pay their interns.

I’m not sure about this one, but… it definitely caught my eye. Apparently the Lingerie Football League is looking for interns. I guess professional sports is mostly about fine physical specimens (pro bowling excluded, of course), so this isn’t too far of a reach. I mean, the AVP relies on sex appeal too. Oh wait… the women and men on the AVP Tour are actually exceptional athletes. Apparently that’s not the case with the Lingerie Football League. It’s more about creating a women’s football league that the masses will want to watch. I think that it’s pretty ridiculous and that it will probably be a bust (pun intended, and I realize that the article that I just linked to made the same pun), but that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be cool to intern with them. Having that on a resume will at least be a conversation starter (or ender depending on who’s looking at your resume).

Who Said Two Hand Touch Is Boring?

Actually, the Lingerie Football League is a tackle football league, but they’re trying to differentiate themselves from “the myriad of women’s tackle football leagues that nobody knows exists” according to a quote from the league founder in this article. If you want to help with that differentiation, then an internship might be worth considering. I originally found out about the internships from this article, which doesn’t contain too many details. All 10 league teams are looking for interns, and the teams are: Atlanta Steam, Chicago Bliss, Miami Caliente, New England Euphoria, Tampa Breeze, Dallas Desire, Denver Dream, Los Angeles Temptation, San Diego Seduction, and Seattle Mist. If you had any doubts about what the LFL is trying to accomplish here, I think that the team names should have cleared it up for you. The internships apparently offer “experience in a wide range of fields, including sports business, marketing, publicity, event/television production and talent management,” but there’s no mention of whether they’re paid or not. If my sarcasm hasn’t soured you on the potential for a well-rounded internship experience, then send your resume and cover letter to Talent@LFLUS.com.

How do you feel about the intersection of friendship and marketing? I know that a lot people weren’t happy when Facebook Beacon started telling their friends what they were buying from other sites, and I also know that nobody wants their friends to go salesman on them (like with Cutco knives); however, word of mouth marketing remains one of the most effective vehicles to reach people with a message. That’s because we still seem to trust our friends the most when it comes to making purchasing decisions. But can brands become our friends? According to 22squared, a marketing agency based out of Atlanta, GA and Tampa, FL, “consumers want brands that act more like helpful friends than persuasive marketers.” I think that’s right, but it still sounds a little weird to me. Maybe we should look at Facebook again for the answer. Plenty of people are “Fans” of brands (like ours), which is very much like being Facebook Friends with them.

What’s the Big Deal About 484?

I don’t know where they got the name 22squared, but Google tells me that 22 squared = 484. I’m not sure what to make of that, so let’s get back to talking about how 22squared thinks that “the consumer is your friend.” They’ve actually developed a metric to judge how friendly brands are. You can calculate it like this:

Strength of Relationship + Number of Advocates + Maturity of Relationship = Friendship Factor %

I’m not sure where you get the inputs from, but if you click “The Work” link on 22squared’s Home page (I can’t link because it’s in Flash) and click through the pages, you’ll see the scores of many well recognized brands. Usually you need to divide by something to get a percentage, so I don’t know what this is all about, but I’d love to hear the science behind it. I wonder what One Day, One Internship’s Friendship Factor % is. I’d like to think that we’re a pretty friendly brand.

Anyway, if I want to keep your friendship, I need to get to the internships. Unlike 22squared’s entry level jobs which are posted on their Jobs page, 22squared’s internships are posted on their blog. These are unpaid (yuck!) positions in both Tampa and Atlanta, and you can focus on a variety of areas including Account Management, Media, Creative, Brand Planning, Digital/Interactive (Creative and Media), Broadcast Production, Studio, Information Technology, and Human Resources. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to HR@22squared.com with INTERNSHIP/ATL for Atlanta or INTERNSHIP/TPA for Tampa in the subject line. You can find all of the details about the internships here, so be sure to give it a good read before you apply.

Even if your college or university isn’t giving you the day off from classes, I hope that you remembered that today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s an important day to reflect, and it’s becoming even more important as there is a growing movement to make MLK Day a day of national service. They’re calling it “a day on, not a day off,” and I think it would be pretty cool to see employers and schools embrace this movement. It’s the next step in making Dr. King’s dream come true. If one day of service just isn’t enough for you to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., then you might want to consider an internship at The King Center in Atlanta, GA. The King Center is located on a privately owned inholding within the authorized boundaries of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, and it is “dedicated to the advancement of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Do You Have a Dream?

Before you start thinking about an internship with The King Center, you might want to take some time today to do some Wikipedia-ing. There’s a lot to know about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his National Historic Site, so do your research and then start checking out The King Center’s website. You’re not going to find any internship listings, but they do list an HR contact – hr@thekingcenter.org – on their Contact page. If you have a dream or you want to make Dr. King’s dream come true, then you’ll need to step out of your comfort zone and ask the people at The King Center how you fit into their plans. It’s not supposed to be easy.

Just a few days ago, I told you about my early love for Hip Hop when I brought you the details on Hot 97′s internships. Today I’ve found some more internships that take me back to my days of having my Mom drive me to Sam Goody to get the newest Rap CD. They’re with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in Atlanta, GA. Whether you sided with Biggie or Pac, if you want to work in an “environment that encourages freedom of expression, serves as a resource for families, and empowers via education,” then the TASF is the perfect place for you to intern. Tupac Shakur’s life may have been tragically cut short, but his legacy continues to live on, both through his music and his foundation. Although much of his public persona was based on the “Thug Life” image, Tupac definitely had a softer side and a love for the arts. That certainly comes through in the work of his foundation.

Hit These Internships Up

I’m not sure how I came across these internships, but a few days ago I saw that the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation was looking for interns, and I knew that I had to post about them. They don’t provide any information on their own website about the internships, but they are posted in a couple of places online – here and here. The internships look pretty basic – they’re for the spring, and they require a 10-12 hour per week commitment (there’s no mention, but they’re probably unpaid). It’s unclear what the interns will be expected to do, but they should have some pretty exciting work considering what the TASF does. If you’d like to apply, send a cover letter and resume to vwcambridge@tasf.org.

Maybe I’ve started too many posts like this, but I was doing my daily scan of Twitter for interesting internships when I came across a tweet from @bethcromwell about StrategyOne internships. I clicked the link and was surprised to end up on the website of Edelman. Apparently StrategyOne is a part of Edelman, so I decided to take a look at Edelman’s entire internship program. Edelman is a huge PR firm. They have 3,100 employees across 51 worldwide offices. They were voted PRWeek’s Large Agency of the Year for 2008 because of their position as a thought leader in new and social media. It’s cool to see the big guys as early adopters, so that’s why we think an internship with Edelman might be worth considering. It’d also be worth considering because Edelman is the PR Agency that was behind the launches of Halo 3 and Adobe CS3. Sweet!

Do They Walk the Walk?

Edelman’s internship program isn’t actually called an internship program. It’s called their Trainee Program. Their Internship program is for students who have graduated, and the Trainee Program is for current students. The programs appear to be essentially the same, as Edelman’s Internship/Trainee Program page uses the words almost interchangeably. Unfortunately for Edelman, their Internship/Trainee Program page is about as bland as you will see (what about all that social media knowhow?). It offers an outdated description of the company, and an overly formal tone – “Thank you for your interest in Edelman and our Training Program.” The page also has a funky (read: hard to use) way of showing the internships. Instead of listing them all on one page, you have to use a dropdown menu to select the location where you’d like to intern. You first need to choose from the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. If you choose the US, you then need to choose between Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Miami, New York, Orlando, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, Silicon Valley, and Washington, DC. From there you may get specific information about the Internship/Trainee Program, or you may just get a link to where you can apply. Some of the locations have continuously open internships, while others have more specific time periods when you can apply. It’s a rough interface, and it’s surprising considering the fact that Edelman has a recruiter who is using Twitter. In fact, I can’t even find the internships that she tweeted about from Edelman’s Internships page.

Despite the difficulty that you might have to find the right internship for you at Edelman, it’s worth the effort. They’re a big name, but they’re not resting on their laurels when it comes to their practices. Public relations interns at Edelman work in “areas such as: media relations, website and press material development, video production, special event and press conference planning, internal strategy sessions, and new business research,” while there are also “opportunities in other areas, including finance and accounting, human resources, and MIS.” The offerings and compensation (sounds like the internships are paid) vary by office, so you’ll have to take a look at specific internships for more details. You can apply for all of the internships through an online form. If you’re completely befuddled by the interface, you may just want to send an e-mail to online.recruiting@edelman.com and ask them to help you out (but don’t send your resume to this address).

I never thought that moving to Chicago would prolong the baseball season for me. Living in the New York City area gave me 13 straight years of October baseball, and now that I’ve left, both Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium will remain empty for the rest of the fall before they eventually face demolition. It’s lucky for me that I’m now living in a new city that happens to have two teams that are still in it. I get a 14th straight year of local baseball in October! Playoff baseball is by far the most exciting baseball of the year, but it also means that season will soon be over. Those of you who are baseball fans know how long the winter seems when there is only hot stove chatter to keep you entertained while you wait for pitchers and catchers to report to Spring Training. Although it may seem ridiculously early, now is the time to start thinking about your Summer plans if you want to intern with Major League Baseball. It’s pretty obvious that there is a lot of demand for these internships, so you need to make sure that you’re on the ball and beat all of the deadlines.

Take Me Out to an Internship

As far as we can tell, there are 3 types of internships that you can get in Major League Baseball, and, unfortunately, none of them are directly with the league. There are internships with MLB.com, Journalism internships with MLB.com, and internships with specific MLB teams. Here’s a rundown of the three types of internships and how you can apply for them.

MLB.com Internships

MLB.com is part of MLB Advanced Media, which is a separate arm of Major League Baseball. They run all 30 team websites and allegedly have editorial independence from the league. Their focus is entirely on multimedia and production, but they offer quite a variety of internships. You can intern with MLB.com in Finance, Marketing, Club Marketing, E-Commerce, Legal, Technology, Sponsorship, Design, and Public Relations. These internships are located in New York City, are paid $12.50 an hour, and last 8 to 10 weeks. MLB.com is currently recruiting for the Summer of 2009, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to Interns2009@mlb.com.

MLB.com Journalism Internships

The second grouping of internships is also with MLB.com, but they separate it out from their regular internship program. These internships are for “aspiring sportswriters” who want to spend the Summer of ’09 writing about baseball. 33 interns will be selected (one for each team, and three total to cover the Minor Leagues) and will be assigned to “work closely with a site reporter to give visitors to a team’s Web site all the information they need to follow the team from Opening Day to season’s end.” You can state a preference for which Major League city that you’d like to be assigned to, but your chances are much better to be selected if you state no preference. Interns are expected to spend at least 10 weeks in the program, and the pay is $500 per week and housing/transportation is not provided. The application deadline is November 30th, and the application is somewhat complex, so you’ll need the time to get things together.

There will also be a small number of copy editor/producer internships available. The application process is the same.

To apply:

Applicants should submit a resume, 5 to 10 published articles (no columns should be included), a list of references and a 750-word essay on why MLB.com should pick you. Please use the essay as a way of showing your creativity as a writer; in short, it should be more than a simple cover letter.

Please mail all internship applications to:

Bill Hill
Assistant Managing Editor/MLB.com
Attn: Internship Application
14825 N. 97th Place
Scottsdale, AZ 85260

That’s right, you need to mail, not e-mail, your application. If you do have questions about these MLB Journalism internships, you can contact Bill Hill at bill.hill@MLB.com. Make sure that you put the words “Internship Info” in the subject line to get through his spam filter.

Internships with MLB Teams

Finally, you can search for internships with individual MLB teams from a different site. This is where Major League Baseball follows what other major sports leagues do and uses TeamWorkOnline to post their internships. Right now there are listings with the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and San Diego Padres, but this will probably change over time, as different teams have different hiring schedules. If you’re waiting to hear about internships with a specific team, you can sign up for Internship Notification e-mails or you can subscribe to the MLB Internship RSS Feed. There is an online application process for internships with teams, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to do.

This is all that we can find about interning in Major League Baseball, but we think that there must be some way to intern directly with the league. If anybody has leads on opportunities like these, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.

September just came out of nowhere, and now it seems like students across the country have already started their Fall internships. Since interning in the fall is usually a little more casual than a Summer internship, there’s still a good chance that you can pick up a last minute fall internship in the next few weeks. We’re going to start shifting our focus towards Winter, Spring, and even Summer internships, but if we see great Fall opportunities, we’ll be sure to post about them. That’s what we’re doing today. Bark Bark is a commercial production firm that is looking for Fall interns in the Atlanta area.

Where My Dogs (Interns) At?

When we say that Bark Bark does “commercial production,” we mean that they produce commercials, not that they do production for commercial entities. A lot of their commercials seem to be for tv networks that are promoting their own shows. You can see a ton of Bark Bark’s work just by visiting their home page at Bark-Bark.com. There isn’t much else on the web site as Bark Bark seems to let their commercials speak for themselves. They’re looking for interns who have a deep interest in commercial production and who can work a couple whole or at least half days per week. They don’t seem to be interested in experience, just passion for learning about the world of production. They’d love to have interns start as soon as possible. The internships are based in Atlanta, GA and are unpaid, except on shoot days when they are paid. You can read the full internship posting here, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to lisa@bark-bark.com.

Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. Although many of the NHL Teams have major Summer internship programs, they also need interns during the hockey season. While you may be focused on baseball or the Olympics right now, you should get your mind back to hockey for a bit and try to find an internship with an NHL Team for this coming fall or spring.

Internships with the NHL Teams

There’s no way to generalize about all of the internships with NHL teams, because there are just too many. We’ve listed below all of the currently listed internships offered by the NHL and its teams. The NHL’s Jobs and Internships site is built on the same job board software that we talked about when we covered the NFL’s internships. We generally like it. It’s easy to navigate, and you can apply for the internships easily online. Here’s what’s available.

There’s a decent amount of information about each internship on the site, and for the most part the NHL teams do a good job of identifying exactly what they’re looking for in candidates. Fall looks like a great time to intern with the NHL, so get out of the penalty box and start researching.

I was just reading some articles about some hockey players from Cornell who graduated (or didn’t) with me and how much they’re making in their “entry-level jobs.” You should definitely hang out with the hockey players at your college.

Are you a news junkie? Do you write for your college newspaper? Have a radio show on your college station? Upload your own videos to YouTube? Whether you want to be behind the camera, in front of the camera, or in the editing room, CNN offers an excellent internship program that will get you familiar with working in television and the news. If you want to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, CNN is the place to start. The variety of internships that they offer provide phenomenal opportunities for hands-on experience and training.

Internships in the News

Although the deadline for Summer internships passed (it was April 13th), it appears that CNN still has internships for this summer listed on their website. Beyond that, we also saw 2 internships with CNN in New York posted on a separate job board. Since we’re not sure which specific internships are still available, we’re just going to tell you how to navigate the process to score an internships with CNN for this summer. Of course, CNN also offers Fall and Spring internships, so if you’re looking that far forward, you can certainly use these tips to get started on the process well in advance (the deadline to apply for Fall internships is August 24th).

Navigating the Process

CNN has 3 separate internship pages – one for positions in Atlanta, GA, one for positions in other U.S. cities, and one for international positions. The process for applying to each is different, but it’s relatively well laid out on the respective pages. Each page links to internship search results based on the city. You can easily see which opportunities are still listed for your city of interest, or you can use the overall search function to search for all internships with CNN. The problem is that CNN’s Applicant Tracking System sucks. Many positions are still listed, but when you click through to apply, it tells you that the job no longer exists. It builds up false hopes. If you do find an internship that is still listed, you then have to sign up and login to apply. We’d link to individual internship postings, but the way CNN’s Applicant Tracking System generates links doesn’t allow us to. The site also doesn’t work in Safari. It’s pretty much a total mess. Follow the steps that we just told you, and you should be ok, but finding and applying for an internship with CNN certainly isn’t intuitive.

Still, CNN is a great name to have on your resume, so it’s probably worth your trouble – especially since it’s almost June. Interns at CNN are unpaid and are responsible for their own housing and transportation, so we hope you’ve been saving up too. Great experience can be expensive. Lastly, we did see two internships at CNN in New York posted on a closed job board. We don’t know if these are also posted on CNN’s site, since the job title on the posting was non-specific, but the listing did ask applicants to send a cover letter and resume to richard.morris@turner.com. That’s a lot easier than going through the application process on their website.

If you’re still having trouble navigating the internship application process with CNN, don’t be afraid to leave a comment on this post. We’ll get back to you and see if we can figure out how to help you. Good luck!

We first found Better World Books when we were looking for non-profits jobs to write about for One Day, One Job (in case you were wondering, here are non-profit internships). We quickly realized that they weren’t a non-profit, but a “for profit social venture.” That means that Better World Books operates with the goal of profitability, but they donate all profits to non-profit organizations such as Books for Africa, Room to Read, and the National Center for Family Literacy. It’s a really cool model that seems to be working well for them.

A Better Way of Doing Business

What really interests us about Better World Books is that their entire business has been built with a college mindset. The company was founded by three college friends and gathers most of its books from college book drives. These books are then sold or donated to certain non-profit organizations. Any book that is not suitable for use or sale is recycled. Better World Books never throws away a books, which means that they have kept 10 million pounds of books out of landfills so far.

The profits of Better World Books’ efforts (whether they be in the form of books or money) are then donated to organizations that promote literacy. Success is measured by both monetary profits and how much change can be enacted through Better World Books’ donations. No time is wasted fundraising, because there is always a flow of income to fund the literacy and education projects that Better World Books selects.

Our Relationship with Better World Books

After we wrote about Better World on our sister site, we were graciously given the opportunity to offer a 20% discount to our readers for any purchases from Better World (since expired). So many people used the discount that Better World Books contacted us again and asked us to continue to work with them through an affiliate program (Yes, we get a commission. No, that’s not why we’re writing about them.) We’re in the process of putting a book store together with our picks for career related books, but until then you can browse Better World on your own. Your purchases will go towards funding literacy programs, shipping is free in the US, and Better World Books buys carbon offsets. We also have to say that the people at Better World Books are awesome. They’re nice, they’re friendly, and they’re helpful. It seems pretty clear that their employees are happy, and that’s why we think that it’ll be a great place to intern.

Better Internships

Better World Books’ Jobs and Internships page shows 3 openings for this summer. They are in Internal Auditing (Alpharetta, GA), Online Marketing (San Francisco), and Acquisitions (Alpharetta, GA). Each internship has a detailed description, and there’s an easy online application system. Clicking through to apply does give a warning about a security certificate’s being out of date, but we don’t think that’s a problem. The compensation section of the job descriptions says “based on skills and experience,” so we think that means that these internships are paid, but don’t quote us on it. Hopefully someone from Better World can stop by and leave a comment with more details.

All three of these internships look excellent, but the Online Marketing position looks especially interesting. Since it reports directly to Justin Brandon, who is our contact at Better World and an all around good guy, there’s a good chance that you might be working with One Day, One Job / Internship. It doesn’t get any better than that! The application deadlines are May 23rd for the two positions in Georgia, and May 31st for the internship with Justin. You actually have some time to apply, but don’t drag your feet just because you can – applyin early can only help you.
