Ever wanted to connect with me or other One Day, One Internship readers on LinkedIn? Join the One Day, One Internship LinkedIn Group and you can do just that.

You know what’s awesome? Having one of your restaurants on The S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restauarants list. You know what’s even more awesome? Having two of your restaurants on the list. That’s the case for Thomas Keller Restaurant Group and its eponymous chef Thomas Keller. Per Se in New York City came in at #10, while The French Laundry in Yountville, CA came in at #32. Additionally Thomas Keller Restaurant Group owns and operates Bouchon Bistro, Bouchon Bakery, and Ad Hoc Restaurant (which are all in Yountville as well). I had the pleasure of dining at the latter for Brunch a few weeks ago, and it was fantastic (especially because we got dessert after breakfast in the form of fancy, but simple ice cream sandwiches). Thomas Keller is probably the biggest name in American fine dining, and he deserves it—he lives up to all the hype, which is hard to do when you have that much hype. Although each of Keller’s restaurants has a unique feel and purpose, they all share “the common desire to provide memorable experiences for every guest that visits.”

50 Best or Bust

Maybe it’s an age thing, but it seems that more and more people I know are becoming “foodies.” I’m shocked at how many people I know who have stepped out of a more traditional career path to go to culinary school. Just because you majored in Accounting or Business or History or Basket Weaving doesn’t mean that you can’t follow your stomach to something else. You might even want to consider an opportunity with Thomas Keller Restaurant Group. Their Careers page shows a wide range of options that include positions in Kitchen, Dining Room, Administration, Management, Private Dinging, Bakery Retail, and Beverage. They don’t list internships on the site, but there is a posting for a Pastry Extern at the French Laundry. Additionally I found a LinkedIn profile of a PR Intern with Thomas Keller Restaurant Group and this story of a culinary student who landed an internship at The French Laundry. These aren’t the kind of positions where you can just come in with no experience at all, but they do offer great learning opportunities (and they should because they appear to be unpaid).

One of my least favorite things about the “real world” is that summer doesn’t automatically mean vacation. Unless you’ve gone into teaching, you’re expected to keep showing up for work every day like it’s the middle of February—even if it’s totally beautiful out. The good thing is that “real world” summer usually lasts from May through early October (at least here in Chicago). Even though you have to keep going to work, your summer isn’t regimented by school’s start and end dates. This means that interning gives you the worst of both worlds. Anyway, we all know that summer is really all about vacation (not internships), and for many that means hitting up a resort like The Balsams in Dixville Notch, NH. In the summer you can play golf or tennis, go kayaking or mountain biking, take a hike, or just relax. In the winter there’s skiing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, snow mobile races, and I’m sure fireplaces to warm up near. It’s an old school New England inn with modern luxuries and fine dining. I’ve never been there, but I know the style—and I like it.

Take a Trip to The Balsams

Hopefully you’re not mad at me for getting you all excited about the prospect of a luxury vacation when you are freaking about vacationing on your parents couch while they head to Europe without you because you didn’t land an internship. Obviously, the reason that I’m telling you all about The Balsams is that they have internship opportunities; in fact, they have a job/internship opportunity that lets you enjoy all of the luxuries of a vacation at The Balsams while getting paid to do it. They’re looking for an “Inn-Bedded Resorter” to live The Balsams life for a summer and report on it. For 2 months you’ll get $2,500, a room in the hotel, 3 meals a day, and free reign of the resort. Your job will be to liveblog/tweet/facebook your life with a variety of technological and social media tools at your disposal. How can you not get excited about a job application that asks you about your proficiency in areas like Fly Fishing, Dancing, Alpine Skiing, Making Cocktails, and Bird Watching? It’s pretty much the ultimate opportunity for someone interested in PR and Social Media. However, if you’re more into the Hospitality Management side, there appear to be other internship opportunities available at The Balsams (although they don’t list them specifically). You just need to check their <a href="http://thebalsams.com/employment" Jobs page for all of the info and the application. There’s even a Culinary Apprenticeship Program. If you have vacation on your mind, check out The Balsams and see how you can find a way to stay with them.

You know Disney. You love Disney. Who doesn’t? As a company they’ve stretched way beyond Mickey Mouse, but when it comes to Disney Theme Parks and Resorts, which includes Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA, it’s still all about Walt Disney’s imagination. There are few things as exciting to a child as a trip to Disney World or Disneyland, and the same can be said for a lot of adults. If there’s any company that I don’t need to tell you more about, it’s probably this one. What I can tell you is that your friends are going to be insanely jealous when you tell them that you’re going to be a part of the Disney College Program while they’re unlinking paperclips and making copies in some boring internship. You’ll also have something on your résumé that will always be the first topic of conversation. How could someone not ask you about your time at Disney World or Disneyland?

Magical Internships with Disney

Disney Theme Parks and Resorts has a very structured internship program called the Disney College Program. It’s offered at both Disney World and Disneyland, and it’s extremely competitive. Although the internship programs are run separately, they seem to mirror each other very closely. Now, I could give you all of the details on the Disney College Program, but Disney is one of the few companies out there that actually does a fantastic job of providing information on their internships. With that said, there’s a ton of information available, so you might be a little overwhelmed. I mean, how many internship programs have their own Wikipedia page? The Disney College Program is paid, and it offers start dates in January, February, March, and April (there are also ongoing internships for culinary interns), and a lot of the recruiting for the program is done on campus—so be sure to check if your school is on their schedule. Students in the program actually get to work in the park, and there are a number of different areas in which you can work. Some options are “food and beverage, operations, custodial, hospitality, and character work” (from Wikipedia). If you want to put on your Mickey ears, then use the links below to find more information about the Disney College Program.

In continuing with my obsession over internships at Inc. 5000 companies (which fits in perfectly with our latest giveaway), we’re going to take a look at Blue Entertainment Sports Television today. They’re a Louisville, KY based “full-service sports and entertainment management, event and production company.” They’ve taken the unified agency approach that you often see in Marketing and Advertising, and have applied it to sports. That means that their areas of work include representation, marketing, promotion, hospitality and events. Their strategy seems to be pretty solid considering that their revenue has grown 4,685.3% over the past three years to $22.9 million.

Are You the BEST?

Blue Entertainment Sports Television is fortuitously named, as their acronym is BEST. I guess you’re well on way to living up to that name when your clients include Magic Johnson, Reggie Bush, Victoria Azarenka, Shawn Marion, Bryan Brothers, and Caroline Wozniacki. Blue Entertainment Sports Television is actually a relatively new brand that came from the combination of preexisting brands SFX Tennis, SFX Events, SFX Media, Game-Seven Sports Marketing, Team Championships International, Blackwave Sports, Humarks, and Worldwide Football and Management Group. There’s actually a case study on the rebranding, and it seems to be correlated with huge revenue growth.

Although BEST doesn’t get specific about what kind of internships they offer (or whether they’re paid), they do make a call for interns on their Contact page. To get a feel for what kind of internships they might offer new college grads, you should browse through their LinkedIn Company Profile and take a look at what types of positions their current and past interns have held. You can apply for an internship at BEST by sending a cover letter and résumé to careers@experienceBEST.com. You should also note that they have quite a few offices beyond their headquarters in Lousiville, KY including domestic offices in Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; and Washington, DC and international offices in Australia, Austria, Canada, Argentina, and Poland.

Good startups create tools that people use. Great startups change the way people do things. Take eBay for example. Yes, people have always bought and sold junk, but eBay enabled people to buy and sell junk all across the world. By expanding the market for your junk, eBay made it worthwhile to sell stuff that would otherwise be collecting dust. San Francisco’s AirBnB hopes to be the eBay for space. Now, they’re not talking about outer space. They mean that spare bedroom that you never use. They want you to rent out your extra space, and they will help you find someone to rent it (read their FAQ for how it works). It could completely change the way that people on a budget travel… or it could be a total flop, but you have to love the idea.

Office Space Available in San Francisco

So far, rooms are available via AirBnB in 870 cities and 73 countries. That’s pretty impressive, although I’m still not sure about staying with someone I don’t know. What I am sure about is that if AirBnB offers you some office space in San Francisco, you should take it. About a month ago they posted on their blog that they were looking for a Really Smart Software Engineer to be Employee #1 (excluding the founders of course). Now they’re looking for both Summer and Fall interns. The only details that I can find on the internships are here, but that’s pretty typical startups. AirBnB is looking for interns in Sales, Business Development, Marketing, and Customer Service. I’m also pretty sure that they’d take a Software Development Intern if they were presented with the right candidate. There’s no word on whether the internships are paid, but considering the fact that AirBnb is already “pizza profitable,” they should at least be able to buy you a slice occasionally. To apply for an internship with AirBnB, send your resume, a paragraph introducing yourself, and a short explanation on why you would want to work at Airbnb to: intern@airbnb.com.

My first introduction to William Shatner was watching Rescue 911. Little did I know that his body of work extended far beyond narrating a show about real life heroes. I imagine today’s children will have an equally narrow view of William Shatner’s career, as they’ll know him as “Priceline Negotiator.” (Can you read those words without hearing the corresponding tune? I can’t.) Anyway, the whole idea behind William Shatner’s newest role – besides his doing the commercials in return for stock – is that Priceline.com will negotiate the best deals on travel-related items like hotels, car rentals, and airline tickets. They also have a “name your own price” model that used to be the core of their business, but now Priceline has widened its focus to discount travel in general.

Internship Negotiator

Don’t you wish you had someone like William Shatner to negotiate your internship for you too? Ok, that’d be a little weird. Sometimes learning negotiating skills is better than having someone do the dirty work for you. I think that I’m glad that the way we find jobs and internships online is different from the way that we find travel deals online. With that said, you can go to the same place for both if you’re interested in an internship in travel or e-commerce. Priceline.com has a ton of Summer internship opportunities available right now. You can find all of their listings on their Jobs and Internships page including internships in Datawarehouse, IT Engineering, IT Network Engineering, Content Management, Public Relations, and Hotels. From there, you’ll be able to apply online. All of the internships at Priceline.com are located at their headquarters in Norwalk, CT, and there’s no mention of whether they’re paid or not.

Having a girlfriend who is a consultant, I’m often subjected to hours of consultant-speak. It’s not really English, as it consists mostly of acronyms. One thing consultants seem to talk about a lot, even though they don’t have an acronym for it, is the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card. It’s apparently by far the best credit card for the consulting lifestyle (especially when you work for a firm that almost exclusively puts you up in Starwood hotels). Since I’ve been hearing the Starwood name a lot, and I’ve had a few people recommend their Jobs to me, I thought it was time to take a look at what kind of entry level jobs are available with one of the world’s largest hotel and leisure companies. In case you’re not familiar with the Starwood brand, they’re the company behind Sheraton, Four Points, aloft, W Hotels, Le Meridien, The Luxury Collection, Element, Westin, and St. Regis. All of them are nice places to stay, and a few of them are about as trendy as you can get when it comes to hotels – check out aloft.

Be a Star at Starwood

Starwood gets hospitality. They also get internships. They offer college students who demonstrate a strong interest in hospitality management internships that offer “experiences comparable to entry-level, full-time professionals in the field of hospitality.” The internships focus on a number of areas that include “rooms, food and beverage, sales, finance, human resources, revenue management or six sigma.” Starwood begins recruiting for Summer internships about this time, and although they haven’t posted an online application from on their Internships page yet, it should be coming in the next few weeks or so. If your college or university is on the list of Starwood’s target schools, then you don’t need to worry about the online application. You should contact your Career Services office for more information about when Starwood will be visiting your campus. If you’re looking for an internship in the Spring or Fall, then your best bet is to contact Starwood’s individual hotels or to use their job search function. They don’t offer much more information than that on “off-season” internships. In addition to the Summer Internship Program, Starwood also offers a Winter Extern Program that last one to two weeks during Fall Break and offers a shorter look at what it’s like to work in the hospitality industry. They open applications for their Externship Program in the Fall. There is no mention of whether Starwood’s internships are paid or unpaid on their site, and we’ve found varying reports through Google searches, so you’ll have to do some digging to find out.

Yesterday I told you how my move to Chicago has extended my baseball watching season, but I’m not sure that I mentioned that I have tickets to today’s Cubs game! I’m pretty excited about it, although I’m not excited about the fact that it might get into the 40s tonight during the game. October baseball is not for fair weather fans – the types who might prefer a catered event at the stadium to a real baseball game. Whether you’re a fair weather fan, an insanely devoted fan who just wants to be as close to your team’s stadium as possible at all time, or even if you just enjoy fine dining, an internship with Levy Restaurants might be something worth thinking about. They’re a company that is all about hospitality and dining experience, and they happen to do catering/events at some pretty amazing venues – Wrigley and U.S. Cellular Field included.

The Levy Difference

A caterer doesn’t get the right to cater at top flight sports venues with out offering a fantastic experience. Levy Restaurants attributes their success to what they call “The Levy Difference.” There happens to be a video on their website with the same name, so we’re going to recommend that you watch that before you dig deeper into internships with Levy Restaurants.

Now that you’ve watched the movie, let’s take a look at Levy Restaurants’ internship offerings. They don’t go into too much detail about their internship offerings, but Levy Restaurants has a Summer Management Internship Program that looks very interesting. It allows college students to work in management at either one of their restaurants or sports & entertainment locations. We have a feeling that these internships may be paid, but we can’t be sure. We also wonder if there are other seasonal opportunities besides summer. There’s no HR contact information, so the only way to get an internship with Levy Restaurants is to apply online through the original internship posting. Levy Restaurants is based out of Chicago, IL, but has operations all across the country – check out their list of venues.

The idea for today’s post came straight from a One Day, One Job reader. She graduated a few months ago and has been looking for entry-level jobs in event planning since. She told us about one company that she was really excited about, but asked us not to post about it until she was either working for them or had landed another job. Even though we’re talking about internships here, we wanted to hold off on posting. Now that she recently landed a job doing exactly what she wants to do (big congratulations to her), we’re free to tell you about hip consulting group, a boutique event management firm. Their site says that they offer internships to students in marketing, hospitality management, and graphic design, although it doesn’t say when these internships are offered.

Get Hip

hip consulting does everything when it comes to events. Whether it’s a corporate meeting, a customer appreciation event, or an employee incentive program, they’ll take care of it. They help clients select a site, register attendees, produce creatives and A/V, brainstorm ideas, and much, much more. The key to their success is attention to detail, so you can be sure that they’ll be willing to do what it takes to make sure an event happens without a hitch. They must be doing things right considering they were named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Hot 500 Fastest Growing Businesses in America. They started with an initial investment of $50,000 in 2000, and did $6.5 million in sales in 2006. That’s some serious growth. With that growth has come hiring – from 2006 to 2007 they grew their numbers by 50% to 30 employees. Hopefully, more employees will allow them to take on more interns.

Our only minor issue with hip consulting is their website. It looks great, but it’s all in Flash. That means that we can’t link to specific pages, and we can’t search the content of their site in Google. Their Careers page says what we already told you in the intro paragraph, and that’s about it. Since they’re a relatively small company, we’ll guess that hip consulting’s internship program is relatively informal. That would lead us to believe that they’re open to taking interns year round, but that’s just a guess (hey, they don’t call it a “Summer” internship program). We do know that hip consulting has taken on at least one intern full time after graduation, so there’s certainly room for advancement (LinkedIn is a wonderful research tool). If you’re a new college grad who wants to get into event planning and wants to work for a CEO who loves fly fishing (I had to throw that in!), then hip consulting looks like a great place to look into. They’re located in Centennial, CO, and they invite you to send a resume and cover letter to careers@gethip.biz. They don’t say if internships are paid or unpaid.

Well, if there’s anyone who’s qualified to write about internships at Orvis, it has to be me. I spent the summers after my sophomore and junior years as an intern in the Human Resources Department. Why did I pick Orvis? Because I am a life long fly fisherman and I love their products. I found the internship listed on their website, and knew that I had to have it. As an Industrial and Labor Relations major, I couldn’t think of a better fit than a HR internship with the company that built my favorite fly rod.

Distinctive Country Living

Orvis has been around since 1856, which apparently makes them the oldest continuously operating catalog company in the country. They have an extremely rich history, which is still a significant factor in the way the company operates today. You should be familiar with this history because it will help you write an impressive cover letter and interview well. The single best resource on Orvis’ history is The Orvis Story, but that costs money, and if you get an internship, then you can use Orvis’ generous 50% employee discount to buy it. So what about web resources on Orvis’ history? There’s this page on the history of Orvis, a timeline of Orvis’ accomplishment, and a very detailed Wikipedia entry on Orvis.

Orvis’ storied history is based on sporting traditions (mostly hunting and fishing), and with that has come their modern focus on distinctive country living. As much as they are known for their fly fishing equipment, Orvis is not just a sporting company; however, their product selection is targeted at people who enjoy the sporting life. Orvis also puts a huge emphasis on environmental conservation, so they are constantly involved with projects that protect the resources, like cold water fisheries, that drive their business.

Drop Them a Line

Orvis does not have a formal internship program. They occasionally post internships on their Careers page, but it’s a department by department thing. If the head of department decides that they want an intern for the summer and has a clear project that needs to be done, then they’ll get one. Currently they have two internships posted for undergrads. One is in Merchandising Analysis and the other is in Graphic Design and Advertising. There’s also an internship that is intended for MBA students in Liquidations Pricing Analysis. One of the internships was just added recently, so keep your eye out for more. Orvis usually acts late when it comes to hiring interns, so you might also want to try cold calling and convincing someone to create an internship for you.

Just as hiring is dependent on department needs, internship experiences are dependent on who your boss is. Some bosses are much more excited to have interns than others, so be sure to get a good read on your potential boss at some point during the hiring process. Typically, Orvis only hires interns when there is a project planned for them, so you should find the work quite meaningful. During my first Summer I analyzed the Associate Survey and presented my findings to Orvis’ Executive Committee (CEO, CFO, VPs, etc.), and my second Summer consisted of my designing and implementing a new performance evaluation system for the entire company. I learned a lot, was treated well, and had a fantastic internship experience because my boss was so enthusiastic about having an intern.

Beyond their internship listings, Orivs also lists positions at Orvis Endorsed Operations on their Job Openings Page. These aren’t actually Orvis jobs, but they do offer the opportunity to spend a summer working for an amazing resort at a big name destination. A lot of these jobs are as fishing guides, but a few are in hospitality.

What Vermont Has to Offer

Orvis’ internships are at their corporate office in Sunderland, VT on the edge of a 377-acre natural black bear habitat. The office is absolutely beautiful and fits perfectly with both the surroundings and Orvis’ mission. There’s a small gym on-site, hiking trails, a casting pond, and a cafe with great food. With that said, it’s in the middle of nowhere – the Orvis office doesn’t even have a zip code. The Manchester area of Vermont is not the most happening place. Yes, they have outlet shopping, but beyond that it’s all about the outdoors. Restaurants are closed by 9, and gas stations close by 10. So if you’re out fishing after that, you’re not going to find anything to eat except what’s in the refrigerator.

If you consider going fishing after work and being in bed by 10 a night well spent, then interning at Orvis will be perfect for you. Ditto if you enjoy helping your co-workers train their dogs on your lunch break. If you’re already an Orvis customer, you know what distinctive country living is all about. If that appeals to you, then use the links to below to find out more about internships at Orvis. Also, feel free to contact me through the comments section if you want to hear more about my experiences interning for Orvis.

Thinking about waiting tables instead of looking an internship? If your reasons for this are more that you’re interested in hospitality management, and less that you just want to put some money in the bank, then the Chicago based Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises internship program might be a great alternative. LEYE is what some call a restaurant empire with over 70 restaurants and approximately 5,000 employees. Managing one restaurant is hard enough, but somehow founder and CEO Richard Melman has been able to do it over and over again.

Richard Melman has built LEYE with great people and a commitment to nurturing talent. This all begins with
Lettuce Entertain You’s internship program, which is directed at rising junior and senior hospitality students. Since it sounds like you need to be a major in hospitality management, we’re not sure if students outside of such programs would be accepted as interns. Interns are put in hourly positions at specific restaurant, and are expected to perform all of the duties associated with that position. In addition LEYE interns are asked to take on certain managerial tasks within the restaurant that they’ve been assigned to. Beyond the day to day tasks of working in a restaurant, interns will also participate in weekly meetings and seminars that bring all of the interns in the program together.

There’s a fine line between a “summer job” and an “internship,” beyond the fact that internships are often just a way to legitimize unpaid labor. Although LEYE interns work most of their days in an hourly restaurant job, the additional educational and management opportunities truly add perspective to the daily work experience – we think that’s what an internship should be about. There is no mention of compensation; however, we think it would be a bit sadistic to ask students who spend their summer working an hourly restaurant job (plus all the other responsibilities) to go unpaid. One of the more unique opportunities for interns at LEYE is the chance to work with other interns to develop a restaurant concept. At the end of the summer, interns present their ideas to LEYE founder, Richard Melman. If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own restaurant, it doesn’t get much better than that.

LEYE hires a significant number of their new managers through their internship program, so the experiences that you will gain as intern will translate directly into readiness for real world jobs after college.

Are you still arguing with your parents over whether Summer should be for internships or vacations? Why not make it both? Hospitality management is an enormous industry with myriad internship opportunities. You can go somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, get an inside view on the tourist experience, and call it an internship.

Don’t get us wrong, an internship at a hotel is going to be hard work with long demanding hours likely, but it’s also an internship experience unlike office jobs that consist mostly of powerpoint, copiers, and coffee. Well, if you’re going to intern at a hotel or resort, it might as well be top notch, right? Why not the Four Seasons?

The Four Seasons’ campus recruiting page says that internships are the best way to gain full employment after graduation. It also says that internships are handled individually by the hotels and resorts. Four Seasons has 74 properties in 31 countries. That’s a lot of options! So start narrowing down your list of desirable options, and then research each individual resort or hotel that you plan on applying to. Your cover letter should describe not only why you want to intern in the hospitality industry, but also why your interests are particularly suited to that location.

You can find the contact information for each Four Seasons location here. And just in case you were worried about what it’s like working for them, Four Seasons has been named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For 8 years straight (most recently they were ranked #53 in 2007 and #27 in 2006).
