You know what One Day, One Internship is all about? It’s you, the audience. Maybe for you, it’s all about learning about cool companies, but for me it’s the fact that every day you bring these posts to life by researching the companies we feature and applying for their jobs. I love it when I get e-mails from employers telling me how excited they were about the surge of talented applicants that they got from being featured on One Day, One Internship. When it comes to the world of advertising, it’s kind of the same. It’s all about the audience. They’re the ones who see the ads, and then hopefully take the desired action—usually that means making a purchase. Collective is a New York City based media company that is entirely audience focused. They are “the leader in understanding and delivering audiences. With the premium inventory that attracts them. The innovative technology that delivers them. And the insights that define them.” By finding the “intersection of the right ad, targeted to the right person, in the right environment,” Collective is able to maximize the effectiveness of any advertising campaign.

Will You Join the Collective?

What Collective does isn’t easy. It requires a ton of data and some extraordinary technology to translate that data into actionable advertising strategies. Collective works with ad agencies, brand advertisers, and publishers to help all of them make the most of audiences, which is why Collective calls itself “The Audience Engine.” If you want to get a feel for what Collective actually does, you should take a look at their What Worked This Week page. It allows you to see what kind of ad campaigns they’ve been running and how well it has worked. Pretty cool for them to be so open with their success stories (although I’d love to see some of their failures too). You kind of have to dig in to really understand what Collective is all about, so I guess their messaging could be a little tighter, but it’s hard when you’re taking such a technical approach to an area like advertising. If you like what you see with Collective, you can check out their Internship page. Right now they have a bunch of jobs posted, but only one internship: Account Management Intern. The position is paid, and it looks exciting, so check it out.

Over the past year I’ve seen cancer do a lot of damage, and I know that I will see it do more damage as I move through life. Still, I believe by the time I’m starting to get old, cancer won’t be nearly as much of a worry as something else that we haven’t even heard of yet. It doesn’t seem all that long ago when most cancers seemed like a death sentence, but now the majority of cancers have strong treatment options. The problem with cancer treatment is that its short-term effects are often worse than those of the disease. The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is trying to change this. They are a New York City based non-profit organization that was started by thankful patients of an oncologist/hematologist whose name is, obviously, Samuel Waxman. The Foundation is “dedicated to supporting a focused research program to develop targeted cancer cell-specific therapies with minimal toxicity, such as differentiation therapy.”

A Foundation for a Cure

I have little or not understanding of the science that Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation focuses on, but I do know that they’ve put $70 million to work since 1976. They have already had success with the treatment that they’ve helped develop for acute promyelocytic leukemia, and there hope is that their research will apply to treating many other forms of cancer too. What makes the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation unique is that their “research is not disease-specific but concept driven.” This means that they have focused on specific way of attacking cancer instead of focusing on treating a specific type of cancer, which is how many cancer related non-profits work. If you’re excited about the research that the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is doing, you might want to consider an internship with them. Right now they have one unpaid intern position posted on Idealist. It looks like the position is most involved with the development function, so take that into consideration.

I’m not a big t-shirt guy. Don’t get me wrong, I have a ton of t-shirts, but they’re usually ones that I somehow managed to get for free. For me a t-shirt isn’t a great way to make a statement, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy the statements that other people make across their chests. Anti-eco is a New York City based t-shirt company that is all about making statements. They are “lovers of social commentary, rational provocation and a thriving healthy planet,” so they poke fun at the environmentalist movement while actually supporting it. You’ll find t-shirts with sayings like “acid rain tastes like chicken,” “be organic. eat an organ,” and “global warming sounds comfy.” They certainly sound anti-eco, but then you see that they use organic cotton, water based inks, and certified responsible apparel production methods. How ironic!

Are You Anti-eco?

Anti-eco’s goal is to “create a product that is as planet-conscious as it is cheeky,” and they do just that. And to add to their responsibility, they also donate a percentage of every sale “to the clean-up and preservation of wildlife in the Gulf oil spill.” Anti-eco’s shirts are quite funny, and so is the copy on their website. As long as you’re not afraid of puns, you should take a look at their Philosophy page. Now, Anti-eco is just a tiny t-shirt startup right now, but they could become a lot more. They’re offering unpaid internships in areas like Fashion PR and Marketing, Creative/Humor Writing and PR, and Fashion Sales, so they appear to have an eye towards growth. At the very least you must be able to get some free t-shirts for your hard work. You can apply by contacting jonathan@anti-eco.com (who I hope calls himself the Anti-ceo).

You know what’s awesome? Having one of your restaurants on The S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restauarants list. You know what’s even more awesome? Having two of your restaurants on the list. That’s the case for Thomas Keller Restaurant Group and its eponymous chef Thomas Keller. Per Se in New York City came in at #10, while The French Laundry in Yountville, CA came in at #32. Additionally Thomas Keller Restaurant Group owns and operates Bouchon Bistro, Bouchon Bakery, and Ad Hoc Restaurant (which are all in Yountville as well). I had the pleasure of dining at the latter for Brunch a few weeks ago, and it was fantastic (especially because we got dessert after breakfast in the form of fancy, but simple ice cream sandwiches). Thomas Keller is probably the biggest name in American fine dining, and he deserves it—he lives up to all the hype, which is hard to do when you have that much hype. Although each of Keller’s restaurants has a unique feel and purpose, they all share “the common desire to provide memorable experiences for every guest that visits.”

50 Best or Bust

Maybe it’s an age thing, but it seems that more and more people I know are becoming “foodies.” I’m shocked at how many people I know who have stepped out of a more traditional career path to go to culinary school. Just because you majored in Accounting or Business or History or Basket Weaving doesn’t mean that you can’t follow your stomach to something else. You might even want to consider an opportunity with Thomas Keller Restaurant Group. Their Careers page shows a wide range of options that include positions in Kitchen, Dining Room, Administration, Management, Private Dinging, Bakery Retail, and Beverage. They don’t list internships on the site, but there is a posting for a Pastry Extern at the French Laundry. Additionally I found a LinkedIn profile of a PR Intern with Thomas Keller Restaurant Group and this story of a culinary student who landed an internship at The French Laundry. These aren’t the kind of positions where you can just come in with no experience at all, but they do offer great learning opportunities (and they should because they appear to be unpaid).

I’m sure plenty of you intend to go to grad school in the future, or you’re considering it now that you’re realizing how tough the job market really is. I have absolutely no intention of going back to school because I’m enjoying learning by doing way too much. I also want nothing to do with standardized tests ever again. But if I was going to take a standardized test like the GMAT, I’d probably want to enroll myself in prep course (because my high school strategy of getting a good night’s sleep the night before the test can only take me so far). From what I’ve heard from friends, ManhattanGMAT is one of the best out there. They’re quite obviously based in New York City, but they have locations all across the country. ManhattanGMAT delivers success for their students by staying true to 3 core concepts: focus, superior curriculum, and real teachers (who scored in the 99th percentile on the GMAT).

Prep Yourself

It astounds me that college students and grads will spend thousands of dollars on test prep, but will begrudgingly turn over $27 for a job search prep course that will help them get a job faster. The people in the test prep business have done a fantastic job of developing their market, and ManhattanGMAT has moved in at the higher end of that market. They’re also doing it with their sister company AtlasLSAT, which offers similar products and services for our future lawyers. If you like the test prep market and think that it could be a cool place to start your career, then you’ll want to check out Careers with ManhattanGMAT. They offer both GMAT Instructor positions and Corporate positions. We’ll take a look at the latter, since they don’t want interns teaching classes. ManhattanGMAT’s job listings don’t mention internships, but they have a number of paid part-time positions that seem pretty comparable to an internship. These include positions in Internet Marketing, Marketing, Operations, and Information Technology. You can apply online for any of these positions.

Sometimes I get annoyed when I go to YouTube to watch a video and get forced to watch an ad or when a video overlay pops up on a site I want to visit. Then I remind myself how awesome it is that I get access to so much free content. As a content producer, I’m especially aware of how hard it is to make a profit off of quality content. I’m never going to bombard you with stuff that you’re not interested in, which is why we only take on sponsors who have awesome internships to offer or at least make sense for college students. I guess that means that we’re editorializing in our acceptance of advertising. ScanScout, which has offices in Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago, targets ads a bit differently. They’re a “technology-driven video ad network that delivers precise audience targeting and superior brand results by capturing and synthesizing billions of content and user interaction data points to match the right ad to the right video, at the right time.” That doesn’t mean that their video ads won’t annoy you, but at least they’ll be way less likely to annoy you—and might even interest you. The whole targeting process is automated, which is really impressive considering these aren’t contextually targeted text ads.

Scout’s Honor

ScanScout already has a lot of major advertisers working on their platform. They have brands like Bing, JC Penney, Jaguar, Oreo, and Axe. You can take a look at some of the ads on the ScanScout home page or you can take a look at their ad gallery. To learn more about ScanScout, you’ll probably want to take a look at how they convey their brand message to both advertisers and publishers. Additionally, you’ll want to know whom they’re partnered with and what kind of technology they’re using. Once you have a feel for ScanScout’s business, you’ll want to check out their Careers page. They don’t have any internships posted on there right now, but a little LinkedIn research showed that they’ve offered internships before. My guess is that you could probably score an opportunity in an area like Business Development, Account Management, or Web Development.

I never loved school, even though I was always pretty good at it. My classes just never really fulfilled my curiosity. Luckily, my parents were always putting me in exciting (and some not so exciting) after school activities. I had Frank’s Science Den where I’d learn all about cool science stuff like Van de Graaff generators and model rockets. I participated in Odyssey of the Mind where I put my early engineering skills to the test in a competition to see which team (or team’s parents to be more accurate) could build a balsa wood structure that held the most weight. There was Little League, which I loved, and soccer, which I didn’t love. I started playing the drums in 5th grade, and went to all kinds of camps over the summers (but never sleep away). Some of these activities were quite affordable, but others came with a pretty decent price tag. Fortunately, my parents had the resources to let me try all kinds of enrichment activities. Many children across our country aren’t so lucky. The only access they have to enrichment programs are those which are free, and the free ones often get overcrowded in a flash. Urban Enrichment is a new, New York City based non-profit that is making “it possible for elementary school students from low-income families to attend the high-quality artistic and athletic enrichment programs that already exist in New York City.”

Enrich Your Life

Although none of my after school activities directly led me to what I’m doing now (the closest was probably Internet camp back when AOL was still new), I’m sure that they helped my overall education. Moreover, I think that entrepreneurship is to enrichment programs as school is to corporate jobs, so I guess those enrichment programs really did have an effect on me. The way Urban Enrichment works is that they raise money and sponsor students to do all kinds of enrichment programs even if they’re in other neighborhoods. Urban Enrichment’s funding model is the basis of how the organization works, since one of the main goals of the organization is to fund after school activities for students. So far they’ve made some pretty strong progress with 45 students from East Harlem enrolled in enrichment activities, 80% of them participating in multiple semesters, and $80,000 in scholarships, grants, and private donations secured for students. Since Urban Enrichment is such a new non-profit, they only have a posting for a single unpaid Program Coordinator Intern on Idealist, but I expect a lot of growth and more internships in the near future. If you want to get in with an exciting startup non-profit, there’s no better way to start than an internship.

There aren’t a lot of things that I can do for 12 hours straight. I’m not even sure that I can sleep that long anymore unless I’m sick or completely sleep deprived. Yet for some people it’s a tradition to participate in or attend free twelve-hour music marathons. It all started in 1978 when a group of New Yorkers came “together to create their own performing arts center.” It became a movement and a non-profit organization called Symphony Space, which has been “embraced by its cultured and educated neighbors and become the centerpiece of the Upper West Side Renaissance.” Cultural institutions like community theaters can have wonderful effects on neighborhoods and their residents, so it should be no surprise that Symphony Space is still going strong and garnering tons of support 32 years later.

Start on a High Note

There’s no way that I can describe what goes on at Symphony Space better than they do. Here’s how they put it on their History page:

A packed house listening intently as an actor conjures up the mood of a short story…the soulful notes of a jazz trumpet fading into the night…children laughing with glee at the antics of a master puppeteer…dancers creating rhythmic patterns across a darkened stage…high school students cheering one of their own as she accepts congratulations after a public reading of her work…images of cinematic brilliance flickering across a screen…families coming together to watch their kids rock out…this is Symphony Space today.

If that’s the kind of stuff that you get excited about—excited enough to sit and watch for 12 hours—then you should probably consider an internship at Symphony Space. They list positions both on their Employment page and on Idealist. Internships at Symphony Space are available in their Literary Department, Marketing, Development, Artistic Directing, Accounting, Theatre Booking/Film, Education, Business Administration, Audio Editing, Peforming Arts, Social Media, and Artistic Administration. All of the positions are paid a small stipend, and you can apply by contacting Jenny Clarke, Internship Program Consultant, at jenny.clarke@symphonyspace.org

One part of my morning routine to get these posts out to you is looking for the company’s logo. Usually I just snag it off of the company’s home page and that’s it. Occasionally I need to find a different version of the logo because it may have a weird background, the word beta written across it, or it may just be too small. The latter was the case today; however, I wasn’t able to find a more reasonably sized logo despite the fact that the company designs logos—in addition to many other things—and is named HUGE. The irony. HUGE is a Brooklyn, NY based company with offices in Los Angeles, London, and Stockholm that “helps build digitally-driven businesses.” What does that mean? It means that they work with some of the biggest brands in the world in areas like strategic planning, user experience, creative, interactive marketing, technology, and emerging platforms. With approximately 225 employees HUGE has designed and developed online experiences that drive 150 million monthly unique visitors and $12.3 billion in revenue.

Are You HUGE?

HUGE must get their name from the reputations of their clients. You can be nothing but HUGE when you’re building web experiences for names like CNN, jetBlue, IKEA, About.com, and MasterCard. Huge offers a range of services that link strategy, design, technology, and interactive marketing within a defined process that is unique to HUGE. The process seems to be working, because HUGE is growing at a crazy rate—or at least their Jobs page seems to indicate they are. They have 60+ job postings, which will provide a HUGE jump in headcount if they’re all filled. Most of the jobs with HUGE seem to require some level of experience, but they’re also offering internships. They have separate pages for opportunities in NYC and LA; however, the positions offered seem to be the same. Internships are offered full-time, are paid, and are available in Visual Design, Product Design, User Experience Design, Technology, Project Management, and Operations. And if one of those areas doesn’t really fit what you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to reach out to HUGE inquire about other types of internships that may be relevant to their business.

Yesterday we talked about how regenerative medicine is making it more and more likely that you’ll be able to heal from a stupid Fourth of July injury. Today we’re going to talk about a company that makes it super simple to make an appointment for a doctor (or dentist) to check out that injury that you’re embarrassed to tell anyone about. The company is called ZocDoc, and they’re based in New York City. They’ll not only help you find a doctor or dentist who specializes in what you need, but they’ll also allow you to make an appointment with just a few clicks. You can even check up on reviews of the doctor before you book him or her, and once you’ve had your appointment, you can add a review. ZocDoc has only rolled out in a few areas so far, so you can’t find any kind of doctor in any city or town, but I’m sure that’s in the plans once the business model gets rolling.

Say Ahhhh

ZocDoc hasn’t fixed the fact that you have to wait in a waiting room before you can wait in an individual waiting room with most doctors, but I bet that their review system will bring down wait times over time. The best thing about ZocDoc is that they put a big emphasis on being able to schedule an appointment today. You get your problem taken care of immediately, and the Doctor is able to fill his or her schedule on days when there aren’t enough advance appointments. It’s brilliant, and surprising that nobody else has already conquered online booking for doctors. I also find it surprising that ZocDoc doesn’t charge Doctors a per-patient fee. New patients are key to growing a practice, so you’d think it would make sense to work with a focus on lead generation. Instead ZocDoc charges a few hundred bucks a month for the service. We’ve seen a huge boom in businesses that help local customers find local businesses, so it seems logical that the model applies to the medical fields. If you’re interested in ZocDoc, you should check out their Internships page. Right now they’re looking for interns in Software Development and PR/Marketing/Social Media. No word on whether they’re paid or not.

I’ve been fascinated by the Internet since I got my first modem when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I knew that I was dealing with something special, but I had no idea how big it would get. What amazes me most now is how effective digital marketing has become. The Internet has truly changed the way our economy works, and it has allowed people like me to build businesses with no physical assets. It’s been fun growing up with the Internet, and I imagine the people at Flightpath kind of feel the same way. They’re a New York City based Digital Agency that was founded in 1994, so they started doing business right around the time I first signed on to eWorld. Since then they’ve been delivering “superior, high-impact digital solutions that drive long-term success for brands and organizations.”

What’s Your Flightpath?

Flightpath creates “dynamic user experiences that leverage deep strategic insight and inspiring digital design to acquire, retain, and satisfy a range of client target customers and audiences.” Those may sound like fancy words, but when you take a look at Flightpath’s clients and look at the work they’ve done, you know that it’s not just jargon. They’ve worked with names like TLC’s Trading Spaces, The New Yorker, and Goya Foods. The services that Flightpath offers to these clients include Website Design & Development, Social Media Services, Search Engine Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, and E-mail Marketing Services. If you want to learn about digital marketing, Flightpath would be a great place to do it. If that interests you, then you should check out their Careers page. They have two unpaid internships posted right now in Social Media and Web Production. These are Summer opportunities, so maybe it isn’t too late for you.

We’ve seen an explosion of startups that help small businesses reach new customers. There are Yext, Groupon, Yelp, and, of course, Google all serving this market in one way or another. But what about smaller, personal businesses? How do dog walkers, personal trainers, tutors, and handymen grow their businesses without relying solely on word of mouth? SkillSlate is one option. It’s a New York City based startup that helps individual service providers connect with customers. When you’re hiring someone to walk your dog or fix your door hinge, you want to know that they’re trustworthy. SkillSlate lets you check these people out and see what other customers are saying about them. It’s just like what Yelp does for restaurants.

Do You Have the Skills?

SkillSlate is still in its early stages, but they have a growing team and venture funding. I only heard about them because Brian Rothenberg, their Director of Search, reached out to me with a message about a position that they’re hiring for. It took me a little bit to get the idea behind SkillSlate, but now that I see how they’re taking a familiar approach to a seemingly underserved market, I’m pretty excited about them. If you are too, you may want to consider an internship with them. The position that Brian contacted me about is for a Ruby Developer (it is an entry level position). He then followed up by telling me that they’re also looking for an unpaid PR/Marketing Intern right now. It’s not posted anywhere else, so you can apply by sending a cover letter and résumé to SkillSlate CEO Bartek Ringwelski at bartek@skillslate.com. You might also want to reach out to them if you’d be interested in a Software Development internship.

I was flipping through the June issue of Fast Company to take a look at their list of The 100 Most Creative People in Business (Lady Gaga is #1) because I figured it would probably lead me towards some new companies to feature. Oddly enough, the profile in magazine that caught my attention first wasn’t even from the list. It was a short profile of Geoff Vuleta, the CEO of New York City based Fahrenheit 212. He’s building a new type of consulting firm—one where IDEO meets McKinsey. He thinks that most innovation firms ignore the fact that the products and ideas that they create need to make money, and he thinks that traditional consulting firms rarely have ideas good enough to serve the markets that they so easily identify. Fahrenheit 212 focuses on helping major companies find new areas for growth—areas that will provide in excess of $100 million in new revenue. But what might be the most unique thing about Fahrenheit 212 is their business model. They only get paid if their ideas work, as they “put up to two thirds of [their] fees at risk, subject to hitting agreed commercial milestones on the initiative.”

Get These Internships Before They Boil Over

I usually look skeptically at people who say things like “I’m an idea person.” It’s very rare for someone to succeed on an idea alone. Geoff Vuleta is very much an idea man. He came from the advertising industry, and that’s one place where you can get by on ideas (after spending many years executing your way up the ladder). However, it isn’t Geoff’s ideas that scored Fahrenheit 212 clients like LG, Goldman Sachs, Starbucks, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and NBC Universal. It’s the fact that Geoff’s ideas are only executed on when there’s a real market opportunity. There are plenty of innovation firms churning out new ideas every day, and there are plenty of consulting firms getting paid big bucks to try to help corporations do what they’re already doing better. Fahrenheit 212 is combining those two approaches with the thought that 1 + 1 = 11 (here are some case studies). If you like the way that math looks, then you need to consider an internship at Fahrenheit 212. They don’t mention internships on their Careers page, but if you look at their employee profiles, you’ll see that some of their people started as interns. It may be too late for a Summer internship, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t reach out to Fahrenheit 212. If you want to get experience in Graphic Design, Video Design, Consulting, Innovation, or Product Development, you should reach out to them at careers@fahrenheit-212.com.

Everybody acts like social media and social networking is a new development, but it really isn’t. Even 15 years ago there was a web service that enabled you to create profiles, connect with friends, engage with communities, and communicate instantly or asynchronously. It was called Aol, and there’s a good chance that you used it. I feel bad for Aol. They had it all. They were the behemoth of the social web before anyone knew what the social web was, but they were too big and not agile enough. They continued to act like an ISP, and their market share eroded as people transitioned to high-speed connections. Today most people think of Aol as irrelevant, but the NYC based company is doing their best to make a comeback. The good news is that they aren’t living in the past. They’re not trying to win at social networking or being an ISP—they’ve repositioned. They now describe themselves as “a leading-edge web services company, with an offering of premium and niche content sites, world-class tools and platforms.” The focus is on content, and in some ways that’s what Aol was always about—making great content easy to access for the masses. The tough thing for Aol is that they’re already a huge company, so they’re going to have to swing for the fences if they want their new business model to work.

You’ve Got Mail!

The only reason that I actually decided to feature Aol today was because they have an amazing internship contest going on right now. It’s focused on their new Lifestream service which aggregates all of your social profiles in one place (apparently Aol hasn’t completely given up on social networking, but I think that they probably should). It’s not your typical internship, but it looks pretty awesome. It’s paid, you get direct access to Aol’s CEO Tim Armstrong, and you get some serious responsibility. Oh yeah, and the most important thing is that your main duty is to live an awesome life and share it through Lifestream. The only downside is that only one person can get it. You can find all of the details here. After looking at that opportunity, I decided to hit up Aol’s Career site and look through their job openings for internships and co-ops (which you can search for specifically). Of Aol’s 749 vacancies, 36 are for internships. I won’t go through each one, but they’re offered in areas like Editorial, Customer Service, Software Development, Customer Service, Finance, Advertising, Sales, Travel, Music, Media/Content, Information Technology, Real Estate, and more. They don’t mention whether most of the positions are paid or not, but the large majority are in New York City with a bunch in the Dulles, VA area and a few scattered across Lancaster, PA; Atlanta, GA; San Francisco, CA; Baltimore, MD; Denver, CO; and other locations.

Since college I’ve been fascinated by social sciences. Before then I didn’t realize that you could apply the scientific method to gain more understanding about nearly any topic in the world. Now that I spend lots of my time focused on things like marketing, career development, and writing, I know how important it can be to base your actions on research or the results of experiments. Obviously, social science goes far beyond those areas, and can have huge positive effects on many of the problems that are facing our world. That’s why the Brooklyn, NY based Social Science Research Council exists. Their mission is “to lead innovation in the social sciences, build interdisciplinary and international networks, mobilize knowledge on important public issues, and educate and train the next generation of social science researchers.” By supporting the field of social science, the SSRC helps all kinds of decision-makers make better informed choices about pressing issues.

Research the SSRC

There are thousands of non-profits that deal head-on with the challenges facing our society, but the SSRC isn’t one of them. The SSRC provides the academic foundation for other non-profits to take actions and do more effective work. As the SSRC About page puts it:

The SSRC is guided by the belief that justice, prosperity, and democracy all require better understanding of complex social, cultural, economic, and political processes. We are committed to the idea that social science can produce necessary knowledge—necessary for citizens to understand their societies and necessary for policy makers to decide on crucial questions.

The SSRC supports social science in a variety of ways including programs, fellowships, publications, and grants. If you’re also fascinated by social science, then you should check out internships at Social Science Research Council. They have a number of unpaid opportunities posted including: Communications Intern, Religion and the Public Sphere Program Intern, and Web Production and Communications Summer Intern.
I have a good friend from Cornell who has been working in the world of education since he graduated with me in 2006. He often sends me recommendations of companies that I should feature, and I’ve actually covered quite a few of them. Earlier this week he sent me a note about Achievement First, a New Haven, CT based non-profit organization that manages charter schools across Connecticut and New York. (Sidenote: Having a friend like mine who is super-connected and aware in a particular industry or area can be huge for your job search.) Achievement First got its start in 1998 when a group of founders got together with the goal of creating a public charter school. They succeeded, and the result was Amistad Academy—and it’s been an amazing result. Over the past 7 years, Amistad Academy students have beat state averages in reading and math on the Connecticut Mastery Tests. In 2003 they built on this success by making Achievement First a separate entity to take the lessons learned from Amistad Academy and spread them throughout the region. Since then Achievement First “has grown into a network that includes 17 academies under nine charters in four cities.”

What Can You Achieve?

The success of Achievement First’s schools has proven that “demographics aren’t destiny.” Urban students can achieve at the same levels as affluent suburban students given the right environment. Achievement First is all about providing these environments. I think that the results speak for themselves. If you’re passionate about education and want to be a part of what Achievement First is doing, then you need to check out their Jobs and Internships page. Right now they’re looking for IT Summer Interns in both New York and Connecticut. Additionally they have a Summer Teaching Fellows Program; however, the deadline for that has passed, so you’ll need to think about it for next year. I’m surprised there isn’t any information on other types of internships, but there’s nothing stopping you from inquiring about those possibilities.

Since we’re talking about social media today, why don’t you Like Us on Facebook and Follow Us on Twitter.

It wasn’t all that long ago when having a URL in a tv commercial was a big deal. Companies were slowly moving to the web, and they were even slower to invest money in advertising their web presences. Now we see companies investing big money on properties that they don’t really own like Facebook pages and Twitter profiles. Would you build a house on property that you didn’t own? Me neither. But what if that house was in your dream location and it wasn’t all that expensive to build. Would it be worth it then? Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media sites offer unparalleled access to potential customers, but they also come with a lot of uncertainty. That hasn’t stopped many popular brands from investing big time in social media, and if they’re going to do it right, they should probably hire New York City based Buddy Media, a company that “provides brands, advertising, public relations agencies with a scalable set of tools to easily control all of their social marketing efforts.”

Who’s Your Buddy?

Luckily, Buddy Media has a short video on how their platform works, so you can watch it below and get a feel for how they’ve built their business.

As you should have noticed in the video, Buddy Media can claim brands like ABC, American Express, GEICO, Southwest Airlines, the NHL, and Playboy as clients. They’ve taken a fragmented process—building a social media strategy—and put it all in one place. While there are tons of social media consultants who are full of hot air, Buddy Media is offering a product that is built to deliver value. If you like Buddy Media’s approach, you should check out their Careers page. Right now they only have one position posted—Production Design Intern, but there’s no reason that you can’t reach out to Buddy Media about another type of position. I couldn’t find any info on whether or not Buddy Media pays its interns.

Today’s company is one of the stranger ones that I’ve come across recently, but I guess that makes sense considering that their name is Quirky. They’re a New York City based product development startup meets social network. That’s right—they’re doing for products what Threadless did for t-shirts. You submit an idea (at a cost, which is weird), and the community decides whether they produce it or not. Everybody has a product idea, but how many people actually take the initiative (and have the ability) to have their idea turned into a real product? Not many. Quirky will do the hard work for you, and they’ll only produce ideas that have been validated by enough pre-sales to make the project worthwhile.

Are You Quirky Enough?

I’m not sure that I’ve done the best job of explaining how Quirky works, so I’m going to let their video do the explaining (click through if you’re an e-mail or RSS subscriber).

So far Quirky’s product line includes a modular spatula system, a trash can that also dispenses bags, and caps that turn water bottles into paintbrushes. Those aren’t product ideas that I’ve ever had, but that’s why they call it Quirky. To me the weird thing about Quirky is that they charge people $99 to submit an idea, yet they only give 12% of the revenue to the “inventor,” while community members get an 18% share (split many ways). So, I guess you could substitute for an internship by participating in the Quirky community, but if you want more stability, you should check out their Internships page. They currently have unpaid opportunities for both Design Interns and General Interns. There’s something for everyone, so if you love cool products and crowdsourcing, Quirky cold be a pretty cool place to intern.

Want more internship search help? Follow me on Twitter. I’m @willyf.

I feel as though I’ve been coming across a lot of innovation design firms lately. I guess it must be a growing field, which makes sense considering that design-focused companies like Apple are making a killing lately. Today we’re taking a look at Aruliden, a New York City based “brand strategy and product design consultancy formed by Rinat Aruh and Johan Liden in 2006 to bridge the gap between design and marketing.” They’re a small firm, but they make up for it by working with big name clients like Motorola, Jaguar, MINI Cooper, Microsoft, Starbucks, and Volkswagen. And not suprisingly, the work that Aruliden has done for these clients is just as impressive as the names of the clients. There’s the Motorola Sparrow and there’s retail strategy for Starbucks. Then there’s Areaware Clips and Scoot, Hydrogen Scooter. As you can see, Aruliden is always working on cool stuff.

Are You Aruliden?

If I had to compare Aruliden to some of the other innovation firms that we’ve featured, I’d say that Aruliden leans a bit more towards the marketing side than most. If you take a look at their capabilities, you’ll see that they list Strategy, Marketing, Product Design, Brand Identity, Packaging, Research, and User Interface (all done in eight languages) in that order. Still, it seems to me that Aruliden is very much in the camp of people who believe that the product is the marketing. Aruliden doesn’t get specific about what kind of internships they offer on their website, but their Contact page does encourage interested people to apply to jobs@aruliden.com. Luckily they also have a Strategy Intern position posted elsewhere, so you should probably target that (and note that it doesn’t require design skills). No word on whether or not it’s paid.

When I decided to build Found Your Career, I pulled in Jason Seiden to tell the employer’s side of the story. He knows what it takes to succeed in the workplace, and he has a new book about just that called Super Staying Power: What You Need to Become Valuable and Resilient at Work. Check it out.

I don’t need to tell you all that the publishing industry has hit a rough spot. All you need to do is look around and see the iPads, Kindles, and Nooks. For hundreds of years the industry has used the same method delivery, but suddenly they’re losing control of how their content is distributed. This is really scary for a lot of people, but they’re forgetting something important: it’s all about the content. And the more targeted your content is to a specific audience, the better. The General Interest publication is a dying breed, and niche media is what it’s all about. F+W Media is a Cincinnati, OH based publisher that gets this. As they put it, F+W Media “offers the highest quality content in a wide variety of formats—from print to digital to video—to highly passionate enthusiast communities.” That’s a model for success that many in the publishing industry are scared of.

Join the Community

At F+W Media it’s all about communities and connecting “passionate, likeminded groups of people to share an ongoing exchange of information, ideas, and inspiration.” That’s why F+W has selected niches like Antiques & Collectibles, Automotive, Construction/Trade, Crafts, Design, Fine Art, Firearm + Knives, Genealogy, Horticulture, Numismatics, Outdoors, Sports, Woodworking, and Writing. You’ve probably never heard of many of the titles that F+W Media publishes, but that’s ok with them. As long as the woodworkers and weapons collectors know about them, they’re happy. In addition to books and magazines, F+W Media also produces digital products and courses and even operates trade shows. The focus on developing and distributing content for enthusiast audiences makes for the potential for some pretty cool internships. Right now there are a number of opportunities posted on F+W Media’s Internships page. These include Summer Production Intern (Iola, WI), Summer Media Intern – Editorial – Adams Media (Avon, MA), Summer Editorial Intern – Design (New York, NY), Summer Art Intern – Print (New York, NY), Summer Advertising Sales Intern (Iola, WI), and Summer Editorial Intern – Southwest Art Magazine (Broomfield, CO). Some positions are listed as unpaid, and for some it doesn’t say, so you’ll have to ask about that if you aren’t looking to work for free.

One development that I’ve become more and more aware of since I graduated college is that of social entrepreneurship. The startup culture doesn’t apply solely to for-profit ventures. The tough thing about starting your own non-profit is getting money to run the organization. Early stage businesses can either grow organically by selling products or get investment at the cost of a portion of future revenues. Early stage non-profits don’t have as many options because most donors only want to give money to established non-profits that have a track record of doing good things with the money. That’s where New York City based Echoing Green steps in. They invest in and support “outstanding emerging social entrepreneurs to launch new organizations that deliver bold, high-impact solutions.” Since Echoing Green is already an established non-profit, they’re able to raise money to support upstarts that already have top notch founders and world changing missions, but not much else.

ECHO!

Echoing Green works through a Fellowship Program where they award 12-15 two-year fellowships every year to social entrepreneurs. The fellowships come with up to $90,000 in funding along with consulting support, a network of experienced social entrepreneurs, and an air of legitimacy that most non-profits have to fight for years to get. The video below will give you a little more information about the program.

Obviously, one option beyond seeking out an internship is to start working towards applying for an Echoing Green fellowship. If you have a big idea and the will to make it happen, then go after it. If you’re not quite ready for that kind of undertaking, you should check out internships at Echoing Green. Although the internships page says that there’s nothing available right now, I was able to find an Idealist posting for a paid Development and Fundraising Intern. The application deadline is May 30th, so you still have some time. And if that doesn’t work for you, there is an e-mail address that you can send cover letters and résumés to regardless of what’s posted: Jackie@echoinggreen.org.

Guys, need something to wear to an interview? Check out Bonobos! They make the best pants that I’ve ever worn (I have something like 12 pairs) and they’ll give you $50 off your first order. Just e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com, and I’ll send you the coupon code.

Yesterday we talked about how search engines work, and today we’re kind of going to do it again (but I promise today’s internships aren’t nearly as technical). Ranking well in search engines, especially Google, is extremely important for marketing purposes. 75% of the people who visit this site every day come from a search engine, and about 80% of those people are brand new site. That means that Google is providing me with a constant stream of new users. Now, this wasn’t dumb luck. I’ve invested hundreds or maybe even thousands of hours on search engine optimization (SEO) to improve this site’s rankings. Obviously, I’m not the only one doing this. Anybody who is anybody in the world of online businesses has an SEO strategy, and that means that there are plenty of marketing firms out there that specialize in SEO. Reprise Media is one of those firms (they also focus on Social Media), and they’re based in San Francisco and New York City.

A Nice Reprise

Both SEO and Social Media Marketing are great examples of the intersection of art and science. Everything that you do in both fields needs to be data based and supported by facts, but without creativity you’ll never find strategies that work like using Facebook ads to land a job. If you want to see Reprise Media’s approach to this, all you need to do is check out some of the Case Studies listed in the sidebar of their Clients page. For instance you can see how they helped sell more Lord of the Rings merchandise or promote an online writing event for teens. The power of the kind of marketing that Reprise Media does is truly incredible, and I encourage any college student with an interest in the field of Marketing to lean towards online marketing. A good start would be checking out Reprise Media’s Careers page, where they unfortunately don’t seem to post internships. However, I was able to find information on their paid Online Marketing internships in San Francisco on Intern Alert, so you can get all of the details there.

Sometimes you need a little recognition to keep working hard at something. Yes, we glorify those who keep persevering in anonymity, but there’s almost no better way to motivate someone than to recognize him or her for a job well done. That’s exactly what Just Vision is trying to do for “Palestinian and Israeli civilians working to end the conflict.” The media rarely talks about them. It focuses on the violence and the conflicts. This is typical of the press—the people who behave badly get their message out, while the people who keep quiet and do the right thing have to beg for a little bit of coverage. Just Vision, which is based in Washington, DC, is an organization fully focused on shining light on the positive news stories about Israeli and Palestinian civic leaders who are working for peace. Just Vision does this with the goal of making these leaders more “visible, valued and influential in their efforts.”

What’s Your Vision?

What’s really interesting about Just Vision is that they didn’t just jump into their work right away. Before they launched in 2003, they spent two years consulting with “nearly 500 Israeli and Palestinian leaders in nonviolence and peacebuilding to learn about their work, their successes, failures and lessons learned.” After learning a lot about they people whom they’d be working for, Just Vision launched with the goal of shining light on the “thousands of ordinary Israelis and Palestinians stepping forward to end the bloodshed, preserve human rights, promote reconciliation and build a sustainable, free and secure future for all.” One of the main ways that they do this is by producing and distributing films. What I really like about Just Vision is that they remain so focused. They could easily stray into working directly on the peace process, but they’ve continued to stick to their one big idea—advocating and publicizing for the people who are already doing the hard work. If you are drawn to this idea, check out Just Vision’s Internships page. Right now they’re looking for interns in Development, Media, General Internship, Translation, and Fact Checking. All of the positions are unpaid, and there are options to intern remotely, or in Washington, DC; New York, NY; or Jerusalem, Israel. You can apply by sending a résumé, writing sample and references via e-mail to: volunteer@justvision.org.

Happy Mother’s Day! Whether you’re sending your Mom flowers or taking her out to brunch, you should know there’s only one gift that she really wants: you to get an internship for the summer. Unfortunately, you can’t force that. If you really want to honor your mother with your choice of internship, you could consider working for a non-profit that is focused on helping new mothers like Baby’s First Home. They are a New York City based organization that is building and running “a supportive housing unit for 5 mothers (17-21) and their children.” They’re in the extremely early stages at this point, but they seem to be well on their way to achieving their mission of helping “mothers build independent lives and stable futures for themselves and their children.”

The Mother of All Opportunities

Now, if you go to BabysFirstHome.org, you’ll notice that there’s just a single page with a link to an e-mail address. That’s because Baby’s First Home is just getting started. I found out about them on Idealist because they had two internships posted: Project Design Intern and Research Intern. Both are unpaid, but should offer an extraordinary opportunity to get involved with the organization while it’s still in its formative stages. I wish that I could tell you more about the organization, but that’s all that I could find. Check out the specific internship postings for details on how to apply.

I was really tempted to cover a high frequency trading firm today after what happened yesterday (please, if you do anything today, take 15 minutes and read a couple of articles about yesterday’s events). I decided it against it, but if you are interested in HFT jobs, check out our post on Jump Trading. Instead of talking about financial markets, we’re going to stick with this week’s unintentional theme of science, kind of. AudienceScience is a Bellevue, WA based digital media company that focuses on taking a scientific approach to online marketing. Their approach puts an extremely strong emphasis on behavioral targeting and moving beyond a demographic approach to advertising.

Science Without the Lab Coat

I guess if I really wanted to link AudienceScience to the May 6th Panic or whatever you want to call it, I could mention the fact that their clients include Wall Street Journal Digital, Financial Times, Nikkei.com, and a number of other brands related to financial news. I’ll bet they collected some really strange behavioral data across those sites yesterday. In case it’s not clear, AudienceScience is very much an advertising business. Their value proposition is all about ensuring that they “deliver your message to the right audience, at the right time, in the right place,” and they’re using extremely sophisticated technology to do so. To get a better feel for the kind of work that AudienceScience does, you can check out their Case Studies or take a look at AudienceTargeting.com. And what about careers at AudienceScience? While they’re located in Bellevue, WA and have offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City, their only internship opportunity is for a Media Development Intern at their Santa Barbara, CA office. There’s no word on whether it’s paid or not, but it looks really cool. I can’t say whether AudienceScience will have any other internship opportunities in the future, but they’re worth watching for.

Looking for a good book? Need new clothes for your upcoming interview? Need a course to help guide you through the internship search? We’ve put together a page on our favorite internship search products, and we’ve even found you a deal or two along the way.

Yesterday we talked about the intersection of science and public relations, but today we’re just going to stick to science—Chemistry to be specific. I struggled with Chemistry in high school. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t my fault though. I had a teacher who wasn’t quite qualified for the job. The amazing thing is that even in high school Chemistry, you’re working with some pretty nasty stuff. That means that a lot of the chemical companies out there aren’t very environmentally friendly. Novomer is an exception. They convert “carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide from pollution into valuable materials [that have] the potential to transform the plastics and materials landscape on a global scale.” And I thought it was cool that trees could turn carbon dioxide into wood. Novomer is based in Waltham, MA, but their R&D lab is in my favorite college town, Ithaca, NY.

Making Chemistry Green

Since I wasn’t a very good Chemistry student, I probably won’t be able to shed much light on the nitty gritty details of what Novomer actually does. I will tell you that the flow chart on their Technology page is probably as simple as it gets though. You should also note that 10% of the oil that our country used is for manufacturing plastics and chemicals. Novomer’s technology not only negates the need for oil in the manufacturing process, but it also locks up carbon dioxide in the good that are produced. That’s pretty amazing. Even the government is impressed, as Novomer was awarded $2.1 million in federal stimulus money. If you’re impressed, check out internships at Novomer. Right now they’re looking for a Business Development Intern to work on Market Analysis and Research. There’s no word on whether the internship is paid or not, but it looks pretty serious, so I hope it is. You don’t need to be a total chemistry whiz, but you better have a basic understanding of the field if you want to land the internship.

It’s been a long time since an airline has actually lost my bag never to be seen again. I think that I was about 6. Unfortunately it was the most awesome bag ever. It wasn’t very large and probably would have been carried on if it didn’t include one of my toy guns. It also had a bag of shark teeth that I collected from the beach, some clothes, various other toys, and a pair of Batman logo emblazoned Chuck Taylors. It was a devastating loss, and I’m still not quite over it. Now it’s been a long time since I’ve worn Converse shoes, but they certainly seem to be making a resurgence (or maybe they’re just always popular but in different subcultures). We’re lucky we still have North Andover, MA based Converse, because it seemed like they might go out of business until Nike swooshed in and bought them in 2003. If that hadn’t happened, I bet the market for second-hand pairs of Chucks would be insane—and then I’d really be missing those Batman All-Stars (even if they were a Size 1 or whatever).

Be an All-Star

I’ll bet that a big part of the reason that Converse struggled in the past was that the demand for their shoes seems to ebb and flow with our country’s cultural shifts. Converse shoes have been popular to basketball players, punk rockers, rappers, hipsters, greasers, and many other groups at varying times. That has to be really hard to plan for. I’d imagine that the influence of Nike has helped Converse run much more smoothly as a business. If anyone knows shoes, it’s Nike. Now that Converse seems to be back on the right track, you might want to check out their internships. They don’t list internships on their Jobs site, but I did come across a posting for a paid fashion PR internship with them here. I also found this intern profile from the University of Maine. It’ll probably take a little work to get the lowdown on other internship opportunities with Converse, but I’m sure that the work will pay off in the form of experience, wages, and shoes.

You know somebody is rich when they have a foundation named after them. You know somebody is really rich when their kids have their own foundations. That was the case with Andrew W. Mellon. In 1940 his daughter Ailsa Mellon Bruce established The Avalon Foundation, and in 1941 his son Paul Mellon established The Old Dominion Foundation. In 1969, with the combined value of the foundations at $220 million, the children decided to merge their foundations in honor of their father. That seems to have been a good decision considering that The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which is based in New York City, has assets totaling $6.5 billion in 2007. In case you don’t know who Andrew Mellon was, you can read his story here. The short of it was that he was held in the same esteem as men like Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie, Morgan, and Frick, but he differed in that “he excelled in four fields of endeavor: as a businessman and banker; as a politician and statesman; as an art collector; and as a philanthropist.”

Granting Your Wish

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a grant making organization, which means that most of what they do is giving money away. They typically do this in five core areas: Higher Education and Scholarship, Scholarly Communications and Information Technology, Museums and Art Conservation, Performing Arts, and Conservation and the Environment. You can find all of the details of each of these specific programs here. Grants are made to both organizations at the forefront of their fields and new upstarts that are showing promise. The Foundation’s philosophy “is to build, strengthen and sustain institutions and their core capacities, rather than be a source for narrowly defined projects,” so they don’t seem to nitpick about how their money is spent. If you’d like to have an internship giving money away (even if it’s not exactly like what Ed McMahon used to do), then you should check out The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Internships page on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for a Paid Intern to join them for the summer. It looks like a great opportunity for a current college student, and you can find application instructions in the job posting.

We’ve featured nearly 800 internship programs since we started. Browse through all of them and see what you’ve missed.

I don’t read a lot of magazines. Why be forced to read a certain set of articles when you can have the Internet bring you only the best? I make an exception for a few magazines, and Inc. is one of them. It’s a fantastic resource for small business owners, and it also has to be the best magazine for job and internship seekers out there. That may seem surprising considering that Inc. doesn’t typically focus on career issues, but when you look at their content, you’ll see why. The Inc. 5000, the magazine’s list of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in the country, is my undisputed favorite resource for finding exciting, under the radar companies that might be hiring interns. I’m also a big fan of their annual feature on America’s Coolest Internships. Since I find Inc. so helpful for internship searching, I logically wondered whether Inc., which is based in New York City, has any internships. Luckily, they do.

Get Inc.

Usually I’d tell you more about Inc., but I think you can figure it out for yourself. Go grab their latest issue or browse around Inc.com. You’ll get a feel for who they are and what they’re about pretty quickly. So what about internships with Inc? They don’t have a Careers page. There’s nothing on their About page. Nothing on their Contact page either. Even being a Google Ninja (here’s my article on using Google for the job search) doesn’t turn up anything very helpful at first. However, I was eventually able to find a few mentions of internship programs at Inc. First and foremost is the posting from yesterday on Ed2010 saying that Inc. needs a paid Editorial Intern ASAP. Additionally, I found an HTML file from The Atlantic Online that lists Boston based publishing internships and mentions more Editorial Internships with Inc. (although it also mentions a deadline of March 1, but I’d use the contact listed anyway if I were you). I also found another Ed2010 posting from last summer. You can also try following Inc.’s Facebook page and Twitter profile for updates. There’s no central place to look for internships with Inc., but if you keep yours eyes peeled, you should be able to find opportunities as they come up.

Lately I’ve been getting a number of e-mails from concerned internship seekers (you can reach me at willy@onedayonejob.com). They seem to be worried about the “One Day, One Internship Effect.” In other words, they think that they have no chance at landing an internship with the companies we profile because the companies get flooded with résumés as soon as we post about them. First of all, that’s silly to worry about. Just apply and do your best and don’t worry about the competition. Second, as much as I’d like to be true, we’re not quite there yet. One Day, One Internship has thousands of readers every day, but most people don’t apply for most internships. I’m not going to give you the actual stats, but luckily there are tools that allow you to see how much traffic a given website gets. One of those is Quantcast, which is headquartered in San Francisco with another office in New York City. Their estimated data isn’t the best—they can’t even come up with an estimate for One Day, One Internship—but their data on larger sites and on sites that have agreed to share their numbers is insanely useful.

Get Quantified

Obviously webmasters don’t need to get data on their own sites from Quantcast, but there are plenty of good uses for Quantcast data. You can use it for competitive analysis, ad planning, research, or showing potential advertisers the demographics and size of your audience (without giving away all of your secrets). Quantcast offers a basic free service that anyone can use, but the real business is in selling subscription access to their huge amounts of data. Apparently Quantcast is “used by 9 of the top 10 media agencies,” so they already have the big name clients. As the web becomes more and more mainstream as a media channel, Quantcast is going to have the opportunity to grow and grow. Right now their Careers page shows a number of opportunities including a few internships: Data Mining and Development Intern, Platform Development Intern, and Web Development Intern. For now everything seems to be pretty technical, but if you have what it takes, go ahead and apply online. There’s no word on whether these positions are paid or not, but I’d be shocked if they weren’t.
