Last week a friend was telling me that his wife, who is in her residency, was going to have to work in the ER on the Fourth of July. I have to imagine that’s one of the most active nights of the year with injuries from fireworks, barbecues, and gunshots (especially in Chicago). All you need is a little imagination to come up with some nasty scenarios that would have ruined your holiday and left you with a permanent injury like my friend who passed out at a barbecue and now has perfect grill marks on his forearm—yes, that means he put his arm down twice. Usually these types of injuries aren’t funny, and they can be extremely traumatic with lasting consequences. Luckily, we’re entering an age of regenerative medicine in which injuries may not be so permanent. Advanced BioHealing is a La Jolla, CA based company that “develops and commercializes living cell therapies that repair damaged human tissue and enable the body to heal itself.” Their current product is called Dermagraft, and it’s a “a bio-engineered skin substitute that assists in restoring damaged tissue and supports the body’s natural healing process.” Right now it’s FDA approved to treat diabetic foot ulcers, but it appears that Advanced BioHealing also has a product called TransCyte that might be used to treat the kind of burns that fireworks or barbecues could cause.

Can You Regenerate?

Now, my medical knowledge is pretty much limited to what I make up, so I’m not the guy to tell you all about Advanced BioHealing. You’ll have to head over to their website and delve into their Corporate Info, Product Details, and Press Releases. Once you get a feel for how Advanced BioHealing works and operates, then you can check out their Careers page. They don’t list any internships right now, but one of their Research Associate job descriptions mentions managing interns. You can reach out to the HR team at Advanced BioHealing to learn more about internship opportunities at careers@abh.com.

I have mixed feelings about any company that decides to take on Google. In one sense I think that they must be extremely stupid, and in another sense, I love the ambition. What seems crazier is taking on Google in their core area of expertise: search. But that’s exactly what Jumptap is doing. Now, they’re not trying to build a new web search engine (that’d be really crazy), but they are aiming to be the name in mobile search. Jumptap is headquartered in Cambridge, MA (with regional offices in NYC and Tel Aviv, Israel), and they realize how much potential there is to make money selling advertising on top of mobile search results. The key difference between what Jumptap and Google are doing with mobile search is that Jumptap is building a unique search experience for mobile users, while Google’s mobile search delivers results that are generally the same as what you’d find when you’re sitting at home on computer.

Jump to Jumptap

Here’s how Jumptap CEO Dan Olschwang explained it in a TechCrunch article back in 2008:

We have a little different approach. We present a more usable result on the mobile phone than incumbent search engines. We are not trying to take Web results and shrink them onto a small screen. If you are standing on a street and looking for Tylenol for your baby, you are not interested in the recent press release. You are interested in the closest open drug store.

A search engine that heavily bases rankings on incoming links like Google does will struggle with a lot of the searches that mobile users use. Jumptap thinks that their algorithm will do a better job of helping you find an open drug store. I haven’t tried their search platform, but I hope they’re able to do it. It would be a huge success and a boon for mobile searchers. If you want to help Jumptap accomplish this, you should take a look at their Internships page. Right now they’re looking for interns in Software Development, Partner Operations, Patents, Quality Assurance, Accounting, Linux System Adminstration, and Social Media/Marketing. It’s unclear whether the positions are paid or not, and you can find all of the full descriptions on Jumptap’s Internships page.

You should have learned how to share in kindergarten. Now stop being selfish and go tell a friend about One Day, One Internship. We promise he or she won’t steal your dream internship.

I’ve been running a business for almost three years now, and I don’t think that I have a single paper document that I couldn’t throw out tomorrow. Everything is on my computer. It may be a mess of e-mails, Word files, PDFs, and Excel sheets, but it’s all here on my hard drive (and backed up too). Luckily my company isn’t very document intensive, but plenty of businesses and organizations like banks, hospitals, and government offices are overloaded with documents. They need a way to manage them, and Hyland Software offers a software product called OnBase to do just that. The company is based in Westlake, OH, and they are in the business of content management systems (although not the kind that run websites). I got the tip on Hyland from a reader who works in Career Services, and she said that although they have a Midwest headquarters, they have taken on a West Coast attitude.

Head for Hyland

Hyland Software’s story is pretty cool, and it explains why Hyland Software has been able to maintain a unique culture for all of these years. Here it is:

Packy Hyland, Jr., visited a bank in Wisconsin one day in 1991 to learn about what kind of records management technology the bank was looking for. The bank’s president asked Packy his opinion of a competitor’s product.

“I could write it better and cheaper,” Packy told the president while the competitor looked on in shock. The president (not knowing that Packy had never written a line of computer code in his life) gave Packy two weeks to come up with what he promised – a better and cheaper solution. Packy then left the bank and went straight to the library to get some books on computer programming.

Packy delivered what he promised. It’s his gritty resolve that defines how we continue to approach our work. Some may call us stubborn and persistent, but that scrappy, smart and dedicated attitude is what drives us to succeed and keeps our clients happy.

It’s a really cool story, but it doesn’t quite explain why they have slides (ones you go down, not PowerPoint) in their office. I’ll leave it up to you guys to answer that mystery. And to do that, you’ll probably need to land a job with Hyland Software. If you head over to their Jobs site, you’ll see that their Careers branding is very different from their corporate branding. It makes sense—finance, healthcare, and government entities want boring software that does it’s job. They don’t care about slides—they may even be scared of slides. But to build boring software that works really well, you need an exciting environment to attract great people. That’s why Hyland Software’s Internships page looks different. If you take a look at Hyland Software’s Internship openings, you’ll see opportunities in the following areas: Software Development, Quality Assurance, Legal, Product Media Marketing, and Sales. All of the positions are paid and most require some sort of technical background, but there are a few options for those of you who are a little less tech savvy. You can apply for all of these positions online.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! In past years we’ve looked at Shamrock Foods and Luck Stone to celebrate the holiday, but today we’re going to take a look at internships with Minneapolis, MN based General Mills because there’s no more authentic Irish breakfast than Lucky Charms. Now, it’s been a while since I last had a bowl of everybody’s favorite marshmallow-filled cereal—ok, it’s been a month—but it feels like it’s been much longer. Beyond Lucky Charms, General Mills’ brands include Cheerios, Pillsbury, Gushers, Haagen-Dazs, Betty Crocker, Cascadian Farm, and many more names that you’ll recognize from the center aisles in the grocery store. Most of them may have nothing to do with St. Patrick’s Day, but add some green food coloring if that’s what you’re really concerned about.

Intern at the Mills

There’s not much more to say about General Mills. Their focus is on their 100+ brands, and that’s what makes them the world’s 6th largest food company. They hold the No. 1 or No. 2 position in nearly every category that they compete in, and their products are so ubiquitous that the average U.S. grocery shopper places at least one General Mills product in his or her cart every time he or she shops. Because General Mills is such a large company, they have a very strong Campus Recruiting Program. Unfortunately, their Campus Events Calendar indicates that most of their intern recruiting has passed. Typically they place students into the following areas:

Brand Design

Finance

Information Systems

Logistics

Manufacturing and Engineering

Marketing

Promotion Marketing

Purchasing

Quality & Regulatory Operations

Research & Development

Sales – Customer Service

Sales – Foodservice

Sales – Consumer Foods

Even though General Mills won’t be visiting any campuses until next fall, your best bet is to use their job search function to look for intern positions. There are quite a few internships still posted, so give them a look and hope for some St. Patrick’s day luck when you apply. I’m pretty sure you’ll find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in the form of a paid internship.

It’s the ultimate premium channel. The one that separates the haves from the have nots—at least when it comes to cable packages. HBO or Home Box Office is the pinnacle of cable television. Ok, maybe I’m going a bit far, but I remember how excited I was when one day HBO was suddenly part of my family’s cable package. The cable company made a mistake, and I was now able to watch all kinds of great movies in the comfort of my own home (and without having my mom take me to Blockbuster). Of course, HBO, which is based in New York City, isn’t just about movies. Their original programming is one of the key reasons that they have more than 40 million subscribers in the US. HBO’s series past and present include Arliss, Sex and the City, Entourage, The Sopranos, Fraggle Rock, and plenty of others. Then there are their documentaries and sports coverage. It’s why people pay extra for HBO (and Cinemax, its sister station): high quality programming without commercials.

Do You Get HBO?

What many people don’t realize about HBO is the role that they’ve played in the history of cable and satellite television. TV used to be free. Then people started paying for cable with packages of channels. Then HBO came along and people started paying extra for individual channels. It almost sounds like the evolution towards paid content that we’re seeing on the Internet; however, I’m not sure that anyone is constantly innovating like HBO has done in the television industry. They were the first to transmit digitally. The first to encrypt their satellite signal. The first to broadcast in HD. The first to offer premium video on demand. HBO knows what their customers want before they want it, so they’re continually able to stay ahead of other premium channels. It will be exciting to see how HBO transforms as more and more content moves online.

Now, what if you want to be a part of the future of HBO? You’ll have to head over to their Careers page, which is hosted by Time Warner, their parent company. Right now there are 44 openings, and a few of them are internships. Unfortunately the Time Warner applicant tracking systems is a total piece of crap, so I can’t link you directly to the internship postings. The posting for HBO Internship is based in Los Angeles, CA, and it offers unpaid positions in Films Development and Production, TV Development and Production, Legal, Casting, Media Relations, Finance, and Participations & Residuals. There is also an NYC based posting for their 2010 Undergraduate Technology Internship. I find it hard to imagine that they don’t have general internships in New York City too, so you may want to reach out to internships@hbo.com to inquire. It’s unclear if you’re supposed apply online or send your résumé and cover letter to the aforementioned e-mail address, so you may want to try both.

I’m a huge fan of open source software. I build all of my sites on the WordPress platform, and I am amazed at how powerful the blogging software has become over the years. Still, I know that it can’t do everything. If I get too much more advanced, I’ll probably have to move to a platform like Drupal—another open source content management system. The problem with that is that I’m not a programmer, and Drupal is a bit more complex than WordPress. Luckily, there’s a support option. Acquia is a Woburn, MA based company that provides “products, services, and technical support for the open source Drupal social publishing system.” They were founded by Dries Buytaert, the guy who created Drupal, so there’s no question about whether they’re the right people to offer Drupal support—they know the platform inside and out.

Acquia an Internship

It may seem strange that powerful software like Drupal is available for free to anyone. Why would software developers give away their hard work? Maybe some of it is altruistic, but it turns out that there are a lot of business models that can be built on top of free software—and they work better when the software has more users. Acquia is a perfect example. Support is worth big bucks to many Drupal users, so $8,000 annually for Acquia’s Enterprise package is money well spent. Acquia has been growing rapidly; with an infusion of capital last year, they have been able to grow their team pretty quickly. If their Jobs page is any indication, this trend hasn’t stopped. Right now Acquia has a number of exciting internship options available.. These include QA Engineering Intern, Operations Intern, Customer Support Intern, and Marketing Intern. You can apply online for any of these positions through this form. No word on whether the positions are paid or not.

I’m sure that you’ve heard a lot in the news about how traditional media companies are having trouble taking their business models online. You may be under the impression that making money from web content is near impossible, but there’s a dirty little secret: it’s not. While companies like the New York Times stick to editorial integrity and chasing Pulitzers, there are companies out there that craft their content with the sole purpose of making money. A perfect example is Santa Monica, CA based Demand Media. They’ve secured more than $355 million in venture capital funding, grown annual revenue to more than $200 million annually, and reached a valuation north of $1 billion all by taking an ROI based approach to content development. How does that work? Demand Media has developed an algorithm that helps them find profitable topics. By using data from Google AdWords, they’re able to estimate the demand for a given piece of content (example: an article and video on how to tie your shoes) along with the revenue that the yet to be developed piece of content could be expected to make given a certain number of pageviews.

Demand an Internship

This may sound unsavory to some of the writers out there, but I’d imagine the business students are in awe. Demand Media delivers their content through a number of web properties, and some of these include eHow, Cracked, and Livestrong.com. In addition to distributing profitable content across their web properties, Demand Media also licenses some of the social media tools that they’ve developed internally to other businesses. One of the amazing things that I learned about Demand Media while researching them is that they publish approximately 4,000 articles and videos every day. Demand Media is YouTube’s largest contributor, and the number of pageviews that they’re driving across their network is staggering. They’re able to develop so much content through an army of freelancers who work through a site called Demand Studios. If you’re a Writer, Filmmaker, or Copy Editor, that’s the first option for getting an “internship” (it’s only freelance, and the rates are kind of low) through Demand Media. Your second option is to check out Demand Media’s Corporate Career offerings. There’s only one internship posted right now—an unpaid Editorial Internship in Santa Monica, CA—although I wouldn’t be surprised to see more opportunities posted in the future. You can apply online for this postion, but before you do, take an hour to learn more about Demand Media—there’s a ton of information available about them.

You thought that you were done with test prep, but now the economy is in a rough spot and the job market is kind of weak. You’re hoping that things will bounce back before you graduate, but in the back of your mind you’re thinking about grad school. And that means doing the standardized test thing all over again. Luckily, things have changed since you took the SAT or ACT. The one size fits all approach of classroom instruction is out, and “adaptive learning” delivered through an online platform is in. Knewton is a New York City based startup that is one of the leading innovators in the test prep market. They seem to be mostly focused on the graduate school test prep market, although they do offer an SAT prep course too (PrepMe is a similar company that focuses only on pre-undergraduate test prep). Knewton is not only focused on improving the quality of test prep results, but they’re also working hard to make test prep more affordable and more interactive.

Get a Knew Internship

Knewton’s key point of differentiation from other test prep companies that provide online courses is its adaptive learning technology. While “traditional classrooms and textbooks provide the same material to every student, Knewton dynamically matches lessons, videos, and practice problems to each student’s ideal learning arc.” Along with the technology, they’re matching their students up with top notch teacher who provide both live and on-demand video instruction. The test prep market is huge, and Knewton is primed to take a big bite out of it. They’re well funded and have a leadership team with a ton of industry experience. They appear to be a growing company, and growing companies usually have internships. Knewton is no exception—although they only have one posted right now. They’re looking for a paid QA Engineering Intern. You can apply online for this position, and you may want to try reaching out to them if you’re interested in a different type of internship (possibly Marketing or Business Development).

I have to admit that the “jobs” that I’m most concerned with today is Steve Jobs. I can’t wait to find out what Apple is announcing today, and I wish that I had some relevant internships to bring you. I don’t, but I did come across a really cool list yesterday called 5 Butt Kicking Companies You (Probably) Never Heard Of. The list is exactly what it promises, as it features 5 later stage startups that are growing rapidly and hiring lots of people. The first company on that list is Palantir, a Palo Alto, CA based company (with another office in McLean, VA) that “is working to radically change how groups analyze information.” They were founded by former PayPal employees and Stanford computer scientists. Right now the company is focused on two verticals: Government and Finance. Both areas deal with massive amount of data and information, so it makes sense that Palantir is starting with them.

Analyze This

The cool thing about Palantir is that they still have a startup attitude and culture despite the fact that they’re focused on two industries that most people don’t associate with fun. The types of problem that Palantir is trying to solve include “national security, global finance, cyber defense, regulation & oversight, public health, and disease control.” This isn’t just some Web 2.0 startup—it’s a serious business with clients who expect perfection. That’s why culture is so important at Palantir. They only hire the best: “Less than 3% of candidates who receive a phone interview will receive an offer.” It’s a strict meritocracy, with a family feel. They have the XBOX, masseuse, and on-site gym that you come to expect from startups, but there’s also the expectation that “‘work’ and ‘life’ are not separate universes.”

Palantir appears to do a lot of on-campus recruiting with a focus on engineers from elite schools. They don’t provide any information on college recruiting on their site, not do they mention internships, but you can take a look at current job openings. They offer plenty of entry level jobs, and I’d imagine that their internships mirror those positions. A little research on LinkedIn turned up the fact that past interns have held titles that include Business Development Intern, Web Programming Intern, Software QA Engineer Intern, Financial Business Development Intern, Sotware Engineering Intern, and Operations Intern. It’s unclear what the best way to apply for an internship at Palantir is (maybe they’re just not posted right now?), but if you’re smart enough to work for them, I’m sure that you can figure it out. Also, I think it’s a safe bet that Palantir’s internships are paid.

That’s how I came across Lunchbox, a Culver City, CA based “full-service agency that specializes in creating complete-branded content packages.” Since I have no idea what that actually means, I took a look at Lunchbox’s portfolio to get a better idea of what their work entails. Basically Lunchbox helps build brands by developing new ways for their clients to introduce their brands to customers. It may be creating stuffed animals for Discovery Channel or designing a magazine for CMT. Whatever the challenge is, Lunchbox brings an amazing creative team that has worked in the past with some of the world’s biggest brands.

What’s in Your Lunchbox?

My take on interactive agencies like Lunchbox is that the best way to judge whether you want to work for them is to look at their portfolio. Not only should you consider the names that they work with—Lunchbox has worked with Pepsi, Nick at Nite, Walmart, Warner Bros., and plenty more—but you should also look closely at what kind of work they put out. I’m impressed with what I see from Lunchbox, but it’s up to you to determine if you’d fit in with them. Now, back to that tweet that I mentioned. There’s not much more to it than a mention of paid Social Media internships, and I can’t find any details on Lunchbox’s Jobs page, but I did find someone on LinkedIn who had a social media internship at Lunchbox. Some of Lunchbox’s job offerings include Back-End Software Engineer, Front-End Software Engineer, Interactive Developer, QA Analyst, and Video Production Assistant, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take interns in those areas too. To apply for an internship at Lunchbox, my recommendation is that you reach out to them at jobs@lbox.com.

If you had a laser that could scan 3-dimensional objects and create digital models of them on your computer, what would you do with it? I’d probably use it on myself first. Then I’d try it on all kinds of stuff that is lying around the house. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think that I’d ever get sick of such a toy. Unfortunately, these things don’t exist for consumers yet, but Research Triangle Park, NC based Geomagic has the technology to do this for inspection and manufacturing processes. Names like Ford, Harley-Davidson, Richard Childress Racing, Timberland, Fisher Price, Pratt & Whitney, NASA, Alcoa Howmet, Danaher and Invisalign use Geomagic’s technology to improve their products. Whether it’s for custom fitting dental products or repairing a NASA space shuttle, digitizing 3D objects opens up all kinds of opportunities.

Do You Believe in Geomagic?

It’s hard to get a handle for what exactly Geomagic does without actually seeing it in action. Luckily they have a video on their About page, which I’ve included below (subscribers can click through to view):

Geomagic is obviously a very technical company, so it’s no surprise that their jobs and internships are skewed more towards Engineering and Software Development. They only have one internship posted right now, and it’s for a QA Intern. There’s no word on whether it’s paid or not, but my guess is that it is because most of these types of internships are. You can find all of the details about the internship on Geomagic’s Careers page. You may also want to try applying for an unlisted internship (which they encourage on their website), if you think that you’d fit in well in a different function.

It took long enough, but Internet video is everywhere. Yes, we had online video 10 years ago, but now it actually looks good—and works. The main reason for this is that end users (you and me) finally have technology in their homes that can handle playing online video. This means high speed Internet connections and computers with enough processing power to not crash when a website uses a Flash video player. The issue for content creators is that delivering video still poses some challenges. Sure, I was able to produce an online job search training course that relied heavily on video with little trouble, but I wasn’t delivering video to thousands or even millions of people (I wish I had the problem). As your use base increases, the challenge of delivering video increase exponentially. Moreover, managing video content in an organized fashion is a completely different challenge than organizing text and images. Brightcove is a Cambridge, MA based company that provides an online video platform for many of the worlds biggest brands.

Are You Bright Enough?

I’ve probably said this before about other companies, but I’m not sure that I’ve seen a client list as impressive as Brightcove’s customer list. It includes names like The New York Times, Discovery Channel, Sony Music, U.S. Army, and Ticketmaster, so you know that Brightcove isn’t just some flash in the pan startup. They have top flight clients who are paying lots of money for the Brightcove platform. With that said, it will be interesting to see how online video delivery develops in the next 5 to 10 years and how Brightcove adapts to those changes. If you want to be a part of the future of online video, then you need to check out Brightcove’s Internship listings. They have quite a few positions posted including Sales Data Specialist Intern, Quality Assurance Intern, Partner Marketing Intern, and Marketing Operations Intern. There’s no word on whether these positions are paid or not, but you can apply online directly from the links above.

I think that e-mail is still the king of social media. We have all of these fancy social networking accounts, but they all send their notifications to our inboxes. If you want someone’s attention, e-mail is the way to go (assuming your message doesn’t look like spam). Heck, you’re probably reading this in your e-mail. That’s why e-mail marketing continues to be a rapidly growing industry. Over on One Day, One Job we’ve already taken a look at jobs with Constant Contact, Aweber, and e-Dialog, and now we’re going to look at an industrial strength e-mail marketing company, ExactTarget. They’re based in Indianapolis, and since 2000 they’ve been focused on “providing the most powerful on-demand software for email communications and finding the best and brightest marketers on the planet to revolutionize the way people think about email.”

Target Your Internship Search Exactly

ExactTarget offers a wide array of e-mail Products, Services, and Solutions that are used by clients like CarMax, Expedia, The Home Depot, and other huge brands. If you’d like to join ExactTarget at the forefront of e-mail marketing, then you should check out their Slingshot Internship Program, which is “a 3-5 month paid internship program that provides driven students with at least two ‘resume-worthy’ job experiences.” Here’s an introductory video on the program (e-mail readers click through to watch):

If you like what you just saw, then there are two tracks that you can take. The ExactTarget Business Track will allow you to gain experience across departments like Marketing, Accounting, Solutions Consulting (SolCon), Account Management, Deliverability Services, Strategic Services, Training, SMB/Renewals, Partnerships, Human Resources, and Sales, while the ExactTarget Technical Track will have you working in Solutions Consulting (SolCon), Customer Support, Integration, Product, Quality Assurance, Deliverability Services, Training, Implementation, Design and Deployment. You may be able to meet up with ExactTarget recruiters on your campus, but if they’re not recruiting at your school you can get the run down on how to apply for the program here. ExactTarget has done a fantastic job with their internship recruiting program, and I bet that reflects how much they value young talent.

Buying a product online is easy when you know which specific brand and model you want, but finding the microwave with the largest capacity or an LCD TV that swivels isn’t always so easy. There’s so much information out there on products, that finding specific details that are important to you (but not everyone else) can be frustrating. Wize is a San Mateo, CA based startup that is trying to make online comparison shopping more intelligent. If you’re buying on price, you already have plenty of product search engines that will make your decision easy for you, but who’s going to tell you which washing machine is most water efficient? That’s what Wize is all about. They’re scouring the Internet for all of the information that is buried in reviews and making it easily searchable so that you can choose the right product for you. It’s still in its early stages, but it seems like a pretty cool approach to e-commerce.

Be Wize

Comparison shopping, product reviews, and e-commerce are some of the most mature markets online. There are sites in the space that have been around since the 90s, so it’s surprising to see an upstart like Wize taking on the market. With that said, they seem to have taken a very different approach to assisting online shoppers, and they’re building a business in a space with a very easy path to monetization (affiliate marketing). I’m relatively impressed with the search product that they have so far, and they seem to have a decent amount of traffic according to Compete.com. They don’t have any internship listings on their site, but they do have a couple positions posted on Startuply. One is definitely an internship, while the other is a job/internship. They’re looking for a Non-Technical Front-End QA Intern as well as someone who can do Data Management / Marketing. Both sound like pretty cool gigs, and you can apply online, so get after it!

Not too long ago, the only unmanned aerial vehicles were planes flown by women (yuck, yuck, yuck). Now we live in a world where planes can fly themselves. Sometimes I like to consider myself high-tech for running a business on the web, then I think about the companies that design, develop, and produce autonomous aircraft and realize that I’m not high-tech at all. Bingen, Washington’s Insitu is one of those companies. They build UAVs that have amazing reconnaissance, communications relay, and geophysical surveying capabilities. Most of their work has been with the military so far, but Insitu is operating in an infant industry with an amazing potential for growth. In fact, from 2004-2007 Insitu’s revenue grew by 1,702.4% to $50 million annually. This performance put them on Inc. Magazine’s List of the 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2006 and 2007. Insitu CEO Steve Sliwa was also named CEO of the Year for 2007 by Seattle Business Monthly. Insitu is clearly comfortable with taking off.

Unmanned Internships

Beyond the cool factor of what Insitu does, their corporate culture is also impressive. They describe themselves as “a lifestyle company with innovative and creative employees who pour as much into their personal lives as they do into their work at the office.” Insitu has a “business comfortable” dress code and is dog friendly. There is also a heavy emphasis on “Living in the Gorge” – meaning the Columbia River gorge, which offers extraordinary outdoor opportunities. You can go kite surfing, mountain climbing, steelhead fishing, or snowboarding with just a short drive. There is even a list of nearby activities on the Insitu website. The way Insitu treats its people has to be part of their amazing success.

So, what about internships? Right now Insitu is recruiting for Fall 2009 Interns and Summer 2010 Interns. Their internship offerings for both fall and summer range all over the place. They have opportunities in: Engineering (Avionics, Software, Product Development and Propulsion), Marketing, Human Resources, Production, Supply Chain, Flight Operations, Technical Writing, Accounting/Finance, Legal, Facilities, Flight Training, Material Management, Quality Control, IT, and Business Development. All internships with Insitu are paid, and you can apply for them online. Get yourself off of autopilot, and apply for an internship with Insitu now.

I know just what you’re thinking right now! “I don’t get advertised to enough.” (If you’re really thinking that, why don’t you check out our job search prep course that will teach you how to get an internship faster?) Ok, so that’s not really what you’re thinking, but it’s what the guys at Boston based Amp Idea are thinking. They think that online advertising has developed some amazing ideas, while outdoor advertising (and other similar mediums) have lost their effectiveness. They want to bridge that gap through things like Taxi Interactive Screens, Hotel Tourist GPS, Tabletop Restaurants, and Limo and Bus interactive devices. We’ve already checked out a company called Captivate Network that is doing this kind of thing in elevators, so it seems as though there is a lot of room for growth in “digital advertising in the out of home space for business owners.”

Get Amped About Amp Idea

Amp Idea is very early stage startup, but they’re already deploying interactive taxi screens in Boston, and they plan to expand to New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. in the very near future. It’s a really cool idea, and if they can gain market share quickly, they’re going to have a very serious business on their hands in a couple of years. According to the company’s LinkedIn Profile the company has 5 employees, and they’re looking to add more in the form of interns. Right now they have internships in Marketing, Graphic Design, and Quality Assurance posted on Startuply. All of the internships are unpaid, but they seem pretty flexible—you could probably still apply for the summer, or you could talk to them about a Fall opportunity.

I always say that when it comes to ad agencies, marketing companies, and PR firms, the best way to evaluate the company is to check out their client list and look at the work that the company has done. It’s not going to tell you everything that you need to know, but it’ll give you a solid idea whether or not the company is a place that you might want to work. If you want to work with big brands who are willing to take big risks with their advertising campaigns, then Crispin Porter + Bogusky might be the place for you. The Subservient Chicken is one of their more successful campaigns that started out virally, while the Microsoft campaign with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld was one of their well-publicized flops. CP+B is headquartered in Miami, FL, while they also have major locations in Boulder, CO; Los Angeles, CA; and London, UK. Their client list sits at the bottom of every page on their website – probably because it is so impressive.

Crispin Porter + Bogusky = An Internship for You?

The brands that Crispin Porter + Bogusky have worked with are unparalleled, so if that’s what gets you excited, keep reading. Here’s what CP+B has to say about what they do:

We’re a factory. A factory that makes advertising and branded creative content. But there is no assemly line. All the work is custom desgined and assembled by hand. We don’t have the luxury of knowing the product we build today will be exactly like the product we built yesterday. To be successful, we have to apporach every single day like it will be our defining moment. Because that’s reality.

They’re clearly a company that knows how to tell stories – their own and their clients’. My only issue with Crispin Porter + Bogusky is that their site is in all Flash, so it’s impossible for me to link to all of the interesting things on their website. Luckily, their Internships page is an exception. CP+B’s Internships are offered at their offices in Miami and Boulder in Content Management (Account Services), Cultural and Business Insights (Account Planning), Message Planning and Analytics (Media), Integrated Production-Video, Interactive Production, Interactive-Technical (Programmers, Developers, Quality Assurance), Interactive- Creative, or Creative. The internships last 12 weeks, and you have until April 10th to apply. There’s no mention of whether the internships are paid or not, and they say that you must be a senior in your program to apply (not sure if that means rising senior or new grad). You can apply by sending your materials to internships@cpbgroup.com. They also offer internships in the winter and fall with different deadlines.

Also, check out Crispin Porter + Bougsky’s Employee Handbook, which will give you an inside peek at what it’s like to work for them. You should note that Crispin Porter + Bogusky recently laid off 6% of their staff, so it’s not an entirely rosy picture there.

I remember the days of browser wars. It was Netscape vs. Internet Explorer, and it was ugly – the Internet that is. Back then it was all about whether or not your browser displayed pages properly, and people were passionately in favor of one browser or the other (or maybe some weird 3rd option). Now it’s all a lot simpler (unless you’re still using Internet Explorer) – your browser probably displays most sites just fine, and you’re more worried about speed and bells and whistles. That’s where Mozilla shines with their Firefox browser. They’re absolutely dominant with web savvy users (except with me – I still use Safari), and they are constantly making their products better. The Mozilla Corporation is a Mountain View, CA based wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit, while the Corporation calls itself a “public benefit organization.” That means that they are “dedicated not to making money but to improving the way people everywhere experience the Internet” – even if by definition they’re still a for profit.

Browse Mozilla’s Internships

Not too long ago it seemed that the browser wars were over. Microsoft had come out on top, and they had even decided that there was no need to keep working on building a better web browser. Out of nowhere an open source project started gaining traction. Internet Explorer is still an industry behemoth, but Mozilla’s Firefox continues to grow and can now claim 15% of the world market share. That means that there’s still a lot of room to grow, and with Mozilla’s focus on user experience, you can be sure that Firefox will continue eating away at Internet Explorer’s user base.

One of the coolest things about working at a company like Mozilla is how many people they reach. Most of my daily work is done on the web, and my web browser is almost like my office. Most of our computing needs are moving to the web, and Mozilla is doing everything in its power to make that experience as enjoyable as possible. So, how can you become a part of Mozilla and their awesome projects? You can start by checking out their Careers page and the internships listed on it. The page is really well done, and includes information on the company, the team, life at Mozilla, first person experiences, and – obviously – job listings. They have a College Recruiting section of their job listings that includes internships in Add-ons Design, Community Marketing I, Labs Engineering, Platform Engineering, Public Relations, Quality Assurance Engineering, Web/Data Analytics, and Community Marketing II. All of these internships look awesome, and they’re paid, so apply online (through your web browser, obviously) soon!

Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for reading! One Day, One Internship wasn’t even around yet last Thanksgiving, but on One Day, One Job we talked about jobs at Plimoth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg. Those are still a great option if you want to be reminded of Thanksgiving every day when you’re at work, but this year we’re going to take the easy way out and talk about turkey. I was first introduced to Jennie-O when I tried some of their turkey bacon. It’s good, if you haven’t had real bacon in a while. Since my Thanksgiving cooking philosophy is that bacon makes everything better (especially when it’s put on top of the turkey and doused in maple syrup, seriously, try it), I’ll let Jennie-O provide the turkey, but I’m getting the bacon somewhere else. In the three or four years that I’ve been familiar with the Jennie-O brand, I’ve noticed that they’ve revved up their branding efforts. You’ve probably seen some of their tv commercials, which are pretty funny, but you may have overlooked the fact that they’re working hard to expand recognition of their employment brand with college students.

Gobble, Gobble. Get an Internship.

Ok, so Jennie-O’s Career page has a corny headline – “It’s everything you’ve wished for” with a picture of a wishbone. Whatever, it works for them, and it’s pretty witty. Their whole Careers site is top notch, so we can’t hold one pun against them. Not only do they have all kinds of information about what it’s like to work and intern for Jennie-O, but they also have a section specifically for college students. It includes a calendar of recruiting events (which have already happened) and other general information. One unique feature is an image that shows which entry level jobs and internships at Jennie-O match up with which college majors. This is extremely helpful for college students who don’t have a clear idea of where their majors will take them. Jennie-O typically offers internships in Accounting, Human Resources, Industrial Engineering, Information Technology, Live Production, Maintenance Engineering, Production Management, Product Marketing, and Quality Assurance, and you can find more specific information about each of these internship areas on Jennie-O’s College Recruiting page. They have brief descriptions of the internships, a list of locations where the internships are available, and “day in the life” feature as well. You can find even more about internships at Jennie-O by visiting the Jennie-O Careers Facebook Page.

To apply for any of the internships with Jennie-O, you should visit their Application page, fill out an application form, and e-mail it to them.

You know how sometimes you know that other people will find something to be cool even though you have no idea why? Yeah, it’s called middle school (and high school, and college, and life). Today’s company, MashON, is one of those for me. I don’t really understand why MashON is a cool company, but I know that some of you will be totally into it. Since I don’t really get it, I’m going to use MashON’s own words to tell you about the MashON Platform, which is:

an interactive suite of online tools which allows users to create and share their own digital stories, e-cards, comic books and graphic novels by combining their personal photos, music, videos and narration to create their own unique personalized story. The result is a rich media, digital comic creation which can instantly be shared with friends and syndicated across the web and on their favorite social networks.

I don’t know why anyone would want to send a SPORE e-card (I also don’t really know what SPORE is besides that it’s a video game), but I know that people will. And that’s why I know that some of you will want to intern for MashON. They’ve also partnered with some names that I’ve heard of – Electronic Arts, MTV, and Marvel.

MashONternships

MashOn hasn’t posted their internships on their own site, which is silly, but they have posted them on Craigslist. Right now MashON is looking for interns who “want to prove their parents wrong by benefiting from their interests in comic books.” They need interns to help them creating user-generated content, provide application usability feedback, perform competitive industry research, and support the creative team with production tasks. They also want their interns to be extremely familiar with and at ease using social media sites. The internships are unpaid and based in West Los Angeles. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to careers@mashon.com.

Did you know that the invention of the portable clock was mainly driven by the need for ships to measure longitude? I bet that you didn’t. I did because I was forced to read a book called Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time during the summer before my Sophomore year of high school. For most of nautical history, one of the most challenging problems facing mariners was figuring out where they were at a given moment. Now companies like Veson Nautical provide software solutions that “allow users to manage and share information efficiently across Chartering, Operations, Trading, and Accounting departments—streamlining workflow, cutting costs, and optimizing profits.” If Christopher Columbus (whom we celebrated – or not – earlier this week) had software to optimize profits, he certainly never would have “discovered” America.

Hack Your Way Aboard

If you’re the type who gets seasick, don’t be scared by the “nautical” in Veson Nautical’s name – they’re a software company. That doesn’t mean that they don’t know the shipping industry like a ferry operator knows his course though. They’ve been in the business for nearly 30 years, and they’ve refocused on software as it has become increasingly essential to maritime operations. Veson Nautical is based out of Boston, MA (though they have offices in Athens, Rotterdam and Singapore) and they’re currently looking to hire some top notch software development interns. They have two internships for college students – Software Developer Intern and Software QA Engineer Intern. These are really cool opportunities because they merge one of the world’s oldest industries (shipping) with one of its newest (software development). Whether you’ve always loved boats or have been fascinated by nautical history, if you have software skills then an internship at Veson Nautical is for you – by the way they’re paid. They’re looking for both Winter and Spring interns right now, so if you have at least 2.5 months free in the upcoming months, let them know. All you need to do to apply is to send a cover letter and resume to hr@veson.com.

Do you have an online shopping problem? If so, don’t read any farther. ShopWiki is a New York City based startup that aims to make online shopping easier. It’s a comparison shopping engine, but it’s supposed to be better because it combines the abilities of search engine type crawlers with user generated content to provide relevant products and reviews. A search for “fly rods” just returned typical listings that I’d expect on any comparison shopping site, but a look at their MP3 Players buying guide shows how valuable a shopping wiki can be. It gives a complete overview of all of the options that you have for buying an MP3 player (yes, there are options other than iPods). Considering that ShopWiki received $6.2 million in venture capital in 2006, there has to be some serious selling potential behind the idea of a shopping wiki.

Interning with ShopWiki

Although ShopWiki’s Jobs page doesn’t show any internship listings, the AlleyCorp Jobs page shows a few. AlleyCorp is a network of businesses that are separately owned, but share resources like the recruiting function – that’s why AlleyCorp’s site has the scoop on internships at ShopWiki. Other AlleyCorp members include Gilt Groupe and 10gen.

If you can wait until the spring, ShopWiki has a pretty good looking Communications internship available for college students. It looks to be a social media heavy position, so you’ll have to be pretty web savvy to apply. Speaking of web savvy, you will have to be extremely web/tech savvy if can’t wait until the spring and want to get one of ShopWiki’s Fall internships – they’re in Software Engineering and Quality Assurance Engineering. You can find in-depth descriptions of each internship on the ShopWiki Jobs page on AlleyCorp’s site. ShopWiki is based out of New York City, and accepts cover letters and resumes at intern@alleycorp.com.

Imagine that instead of graduating in 2009, 2010, or 2011, you are graduating in 1980. You’re interning at a law firm, and you’re working on a major litigation for a Japanese auto manufacturer. You are responsible for organizing thousands of pages of documents by keyword so that the lawyers will be able to quickly find relevant depositions. Doesn’t sound like very much fun, does it? Not too long ago this was a reality, and although we’re now mostly blind to the wonders of search, Laserfiche offered a revolutionary product in 1987 when they offered the first DOS-based document imaging system. Now interns could just scan these documents, and software would automatically index every single word. This may have been bad for paralegals and interns (software replacing humans), but it was good for anyone who might consider working or interning for Laserfiche. Although it may seem that companies could easily manage their documents now that most things have gone digital, they can’t. That’s why Laserfiche is still kicking around, helping organization manage information.

Microfiche + Lasers = Laserfiche

It’s hard to believe that paper documents still exist, but they are all over the place; in fact, some companies are still adding to their paper files. That means Laserfiche has plenty of opportunities to keep growing, but just in case it ever happens that every important file is finally in an electronic database, Laserfiche has broadened its capabilities. They provide services and software to help companies manage information. It may be hard to understand how difficult it is for a large organization to manage all of its information when you can do so easily on your own computer, but it becomes a major problem. We don’t fully understand how Laserfiche solves the problems (that’s why we’re not in the information management business), but we can see why they need to hire so many new people. It’s important stuff! Their clients include “local, state, and federal agencies; financial services firms; healthcare organizations; educational institutions; and other public and private sector organizations.” Next time you got to Town Hall and fill out a paper application for some permit, it might be Laserfiche’s software that ensures that your permit can be brought up on a computer in a different office.

Laserfiche Isn’t Just About Software

Despite the fact that what Laserfiche does is kind of techie, they offer both technical and non-technical internshps. Here’s a quote from Laserfiche’s Campus Recruiting page:

Laserfiche is a great place to start your career. Don’t know what your interests are yet? Interested in everything? We allow you to easily move between project groups to work with a variety of new technologies, collaborate in small groups with your co-workers, and gain experience quickly. After a few years, engineers often will have worked on multiple product lines, exposing them to a variety of tools and emerging technologies

Laserfiche currently has 3 available internship opportunities in Long Beach, CA that appear to be for Fall 2008. There is a Public Relations Internship, a Software Engineer Internship, and a Software Test Engineer Internship. Laserfiche does pay their interns, and also offers subsidized housing for those coming from out of town.

Judging from its website, Laserfiche looks like a fun place to work for college students. Be sure to take a look at testimonials from former Laserfiche interns, Laserfiche’s culture, and the video and pictures on Laserfiche’s About page to get a better sense of what the work experience should be like.

Sometimes we like to get a little creative when we look for internships. It almost becomes a game for us. We hear about something, start researching, and piece together enough information so that we can give you a good idea of what the internship is all about and how you can apply. For some reason some companies don’t think to post their internships on their own websites, which makes finding reliable information a lot harder. Our daily Tweetscanning for internships turned up a link to a closed forum post about Freeverse. That piqued our interest, so we kept researching the video game and software developer.

Unrhymed Lines Having No Predetermined Pattern

It seems that Freeverse prefers to use forum posts for their hiring over having a Jobs section on their website, which we find a bit strange. Still, they make some extremely cool applications and games for Macs, PCs, iPhones, and Xbox360s, and we know that video game jobs and internships are always popular. Here’s what we’ve pieced together. The internship is paid ($250 a week) and located in the Dumbo district of New York City. We found a post on a Freeverse developer’s blog that describes this internship as mostly focused on testing and bug tracking for their video games. To apply you’ll have to contact “hippieman” – the blogger/developer. They’re also looking for interns with C++ or 2D/3D Art experience. If that’s you, they’ll even pay you more than they will pay the regular old interns who don’t have sweet skills. We wish that we could give you more, but even Google Cache failed us in our attempt to dig up more information on this internship at Freeverse.

There is a post from last Fall about internships at Freeverse that might give you a tiny bit of insight into what you’d be getting yourself into. At the very least the post includes a very funny YouTube video. There’s also a post about Freeverse’s recent move to a new office on the The Unofficial Apple Weblog. We can’t find much more than that, but these internships look pretty cool. See what you can find!

Are you enamored with the power of free markets? Is
Trading Places your favorite movie? Are you heartbroken that you waited too long and can’t find an internship in finance? There’s no need to get down, for there are still great companies in financial fields who are hiring Summer interns. Take the CME Group for example, which is “a combined entity formed by the 2007 merger of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).”

Encouraging Capitalism

Our one complaint about CME Group’s website is that their About page doesn’t do a very good job of describing what they actually do. We had to do a little digging to make sure that we were accurately portraying the CME Group’s business, so we went to Wikipedia and the Chicago Tribune for answers (and you should too). First and foremost, CME Group is a financial exchange. They allow trading of financial instruments such as interest rates, equities, currencies, and commodities. This was originally done with the “open outcry method,” which is the complete madness that you’ve probably seen portrayed in movies. This method is in the process of being replaced by CME Globex, which is CME Group’s proprietary electronic trading platform. With that change has come a new focus on technology as a key driver of CME Group’s business.

Working in the Pits? Wearing Funny Clothes? Waving Your Hands Like a Lunatic?

Traditionally traders on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have worked in the “pits,” worn funny looking jackets to identify their role, and used intricate hand signals to communicate. All of these traditions are on their way out as CME Group has moved most of their trading to an online system, and even if they weren’t, interns wouldn’t be with the traders. In fact, looking at the internships that are offered and their titles tells a story of a company with an ever increasing focus on technology

CME Group offers quite a few internships for undergraduates. There is a mix of full time and part time positions – many with the option of flexible hours. Full time internships include: Quality Assurance Intern, Business Analyst Intern, Customer Support Intern, Java Intern Front End Systems, Quality Assurance Internship (CS/CSE Majors), and Wireless network intern. Part time internships include: Computer Science Internship and Project Coordinator Internship. All internships with CME Group are based out of their office in Chicago, IL.

CME Group’s Careers site and Job Listings are both top notch. They’re easy to navigate, user-friendly, and information rich. That fits right in with the fact that CME Group has been named the 2007 Winner of the Best and Brightest Places to Work for in Chicago and one of the Best Places to Work in IT for a third straight year. It’s pretty surprising that internships with a company of this quality are still available to students, but they are!
