Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest hockey players to ever live, once said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” That’s great advice for just about anything in life, but figuring out where that puck is going to be is a lot easier said than done.

What if you always had a way of knowing where the puck was going to be?

Well, you probably wouldn’t be looking for an internship. Instead you’d be playing postseason college hockey (Go Big Red!) and preparing yourself for a six-figure job/NHL contract when you graduate.

The game of hockey is extremely unpredictable when it comes to where the puck is going to be, that’s why Gretzky was such a great talent. He had an inherent ability to anticipate what would happen next. Luckily, you don’t need natural talent to be like Gretzky when it comes to your internship search.

Nobody wants to work for free, yet thousands upon thousands of college students do it every year. They’re not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts or because its for a good cause (ok, many students do take non-profit internships). They do it for “experience.” Many internships offer fantastic learning opportunities, but more often than not the best internships also happen to be paid. My Dad runs a small architecture firm, and he often hires interns. He says that any company that can’t make a profit on an employee who is making $10 an hour (or heave forbid the minimum wage) shouldn’t be in business. I think that he’s right.

Last Minute Internships

As you may have noticed, we’re taking 2 weeks off from internship hunting. We’ll resume our daily company profiles on June 23rd, but the focus will shift to Fall internships.

It’s June 10th. If you haven’t already found a Summer internship, the odds that you will are pretty slim. With that said, there are still opportunities out there, but you’ll have to work hard to find them.
