We were once again scanning Twitter for companies that are looking for Fall interns, and we came across a number of tweets regarding SHIFT Communications. That convinced us to take a look, and we’re pretty happy with what we found (although not happy that barely any companies are tweeting about Fall internships yet). SHIFT Communications is a tech PR firm located in Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA. Judging from their Twitter presence and the fact that they link to 3 of their blogs on their home page, they’re really up on this social media thing. I’m kind of a nerd - I really like reading Economics blogs. So I was delighted to come a cross a a post about internships on Greg Mankiw’s Blog. He’s certainly one of my favorite Econ bloggers (and he’s a Harvard professor), so I value his internship recommendations quite highly. Unfortunately I came across his post when the deadlines had passed for Summer internships at many of the organizations he named. I made note of this, and now that we’re looking at Fall internships, I’ve decided to return to some of the ideas Dr. Mankiw shared. Today we’re going to look at The Heritage Foundation,
a research and educational institute - a think tank - whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.
Think tanks offer some of the most competitive internship programs out there. The Heritage Foundation is no exception. They take 30 interns in both the Fall and Spring. The deadline to apply for their Fall internships is July 1 and the deadline to apply for Spring internships is November 1. You can find all the details about the application process here. We’ve heard that Summer interns at Heritage are paid and that Fall and Spring interns get a travel stipend instead, but we can’t verify this. We do know that the Heritage Foundation does offer its interns housing.
The Heritage Foundation allows interns to work in a wide variety of departments including Accounting, Asian Studies, Center for American Studies, Center for Data Analysis, Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, Coalition Relations, Communications and Marketing, Development, Domestic Policy, the Executive Offices, External Relations, Foreign Policy, Government Relations, Information Systems, Lectures and Seminars, Online Communications, Personnel, Publishing Services, and Special Events.

Great timing for this one. The Houston Astros are 37-42 and just released a player for choking their General Manager. Still, they are a Major League Baseball team, and they have a ton of Fall internships available. Despite the rough times that the team is going through, we doubt that they’ll have any effect on the quality of the internships experience. Sometimes stories are too good not to repeat. “The Birth of a Shoe Company” as told by Kenneth Cole is one of them.
Twenty years ago, I wanted to open a shoe company with limited money. From experience I knew one had to get in quickly because so often new companies run out of cash flow before they get the chance to conduct business. I also knew it was easier to get credit from factories in Europe who needed the business than from American banks that didn’t. So I lined up the factories, went to Europe, designed a collection of shoes, and returned to the states to sell them.
At the time, a shoe company had two options. You could get a room at the Hilton and become 1 of about 1100 shoe companies selling their goods. This didn’t provide the identity or image I felt necessary for a new company, and it cost a lot more money than I had to spend. The other way was to do what the big companies do and get a fancy showroom in Midtown Manhattan not far from the Hilton. More identity, much more money too.

National Association of Railroad Passengers

When I was 6 years old, my Mom and Dad thought it would be a great idea to take the train to Florida. We had been to Florida quite a few times before to visit Grandma and Grandpa, but always flew from a New York airport. For some reason my parents decided that the train was the way to go this time. Instead of 6 hours door to door, it was a solid 2 days, but it was actually a lot of fun. The most memorable part was coming into Washington, DC at night and seeing all of the monuments lit up. It was also on that trip that I finally got the hang of reading. I haven’t taken a long train trip since, but I will be doing so this Summer on my way to Quebec for a fishing trip. Although a train is slower, it’s also more comfortable, less of a hassle, and a nice change of pace. That’s exactly what the National Association of Railroad Passengers thinks too, as they’re a non-profit organization that is pushing for “a modern, customer-focused national passenger train network that provides a travel choice Americans want.” Continue reading about National Association of Railroad Passengers…

She’s a soon to be/recent graduate from Boston University who interned with the Ictus Initiative and loved the experience so much that she went to work with them part-time as a publicist. It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP’s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. Columbia Sportswear Company

I’ve been through a lot with my Columbia jacket. I first bought it for a high school “team building” trip that included a hike up a mountain in November. I was on the hefty side back then, so the hike was quite a trying task. By the time I reached the summit, I was a bit overheated to say the least. The jacket came off, and I enjoyed the much easier hike on the way down not realizing that my brand new jacket was still at the top of the mountain. I thought my Mom was going to kill me, because going back up to get it was not an option. Luckily a guide from another group grabbed the jacket and brought it down for me. That was almost 10 years ago (which is really scary, by the way I feel old and I’m only 23). Since then I’ve used the jacket to slide down snowy hills on my stomach on the way back from class and sneak fish into the Cornell-Harvard hockey game. The jacket is still in great shape, and goes to show that Columbia Sportswear Company makes one hell of a product.
One Tough Mother
Besides the fact that I like Columbia for their great jackets, Performance Fishing Gear, and Reel Stories videos, I also like them for their Chairman of the Board, Gertrude Boyle. She is the star of many of Columbia’s television ads, where she is best known as “one tough mother.” Columbia is run by the family that started it, but they are now publicly traded, which means that the investor relations section of their website offers a plethora of material to research. It’s pretty amazing that the whole company was started by a couple who fled Germany for Portland, Oregon and bought a hat distributorship.
Will You Be One Tough Intern?
Although Columbia makes great sportswear, they don’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Or maybe we should say that Taleo, their Applicant Tracking System provider, doesn’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Either way, all Columbia has is a job search function and a list of benefits. The most frustrating thing is that their job search function only turns up one of their internships, when we’ve found 4 by digging a little deeper.
You knew there was a reason that you subscribed. It’s probably because we find the internships that you would never find. A search for “internships” on Columbia’s Careers site turns up one listing (while a search for “intern” turns up none). The easy to find internship is in Apparel Sourcing. The saving grace is that Columbia has an RSS feed for job search results, so if you search all jobs and then click the RSS feed, you can find a couple more internship listings. We found two internships (here and here) in Industrial Engineering at their Distribution Center. The last internship that we found is not listed on their website, but was posted yesterday on a closed job board that we have access to. It is in Promotions, and is perfect for someone with an interest in Marketing or Public Relations, as long as it’s still available (if you’d like more details about this internship, leave a comment with your real e-mail address in the e-mail box - nobody can see it but us). We also found a now defunct listing from 4 days ago about a Footwear Internship, but we couldn’t find any more details about it. All of Columbia’s internships are located in Portland, OR.
Despite Columbia’s lackluster career site and relatively boring descriptions on their internship postings, we still think they’re a pretty cool company. They’re worth a look, especially now that it’s May.

We’re seriously covering daytime tv this week. Yesterday we talked about soap opera internships, and today we’re talking about Oprah. We just want you to realize the sad reality that if you don’t get motivated and start working to find an internship today, you might spend the summer on the couch instead of in the office. As character building as sitting on the couch is, it’s not the type of work experience that is going to look good on your resume when you need to apply for jobs after graduation. You can’t even call it “traveling.” So instead of making an impression in the seat cushions of your couch, you should be making an impression in a real work environment. If watching soap operas is part of your daily internship search routine, then we really hope it’s because you’ve read our article on using television to find internships. If that is the case, then you’re not the only one who has put trashy tv shows to a strangely productive use for you. Back in the 1930’s Procter & Gamble created soap operas (then on the radio) to sell their soap. They realized that in most households the women bought the soap and also listened to the radio at home during the day. Out of that realization came one of the most brilliant marketing techniques ever created - radio/television programming tailored specifically for reaching a demographic with advertising. In 1952 the move was made to television, and since then Procter & Gamble Productions has been behind major television shows like Guiding Light and As the World Turns. We won’t be making a habit out of it, but this is the second Friday in a row that we’re writing about internships in real estate. Although it may seem counterintuitive because of the weak real estate market, the internships that we do find in real estate are really exciting. We think it’s because the companies that do things differently are the ones who are least affected by recession, and companies that do things differently are often great places to intern. When I was growing up, I had a friend whose Mom only let him watch PBS on tv. That was back in the days of Ghostwriter and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego, so I guess it wasn’t too bad, but I still felt sorry for him. I didn’t know any better. I thought Nickelodeon and Saturday morning cartoons were as good as it could get. Well, I’m not sure my friend turned out any better than the kids who had access to 100 channels, but I do wish that I had spent more time watching educational programming, and less time watching reruns of Saved By the Bell over and over again. Just think how smart I would be if the area of my brain that is permanently occupied by early 90s sitcom trivia was instead filled with something useful like what you find on programming on the Public Broadcasting Service… Continue reading about PBS…
