I’ve been married nearly 9 months now. Slowly more and more people are asking, “When are you going to have kids?” Getting a puppy deflected a little bit of attention, but it’s only going to gain in intensity. If we do eventually give into the pressure, we’ll face a time in our lives that makes preparing for a puppy seem like nothing. That’s why it should be no surprise that the expecting parent market is absolutely huge. In fact, Destination Maternity Corporation, which is based in Philadelphia, PA, does $500 million in annual sales as “the world’s leading maternity apparel retailer.” Yes, a single company (albeit with quite a few brands) can generate half a billion dollars in revenue selling clothes for pregnant women.

I am an outdoorsman. I fish, I hunt, and try to spend as much time in the wilderness as I can. Ok, that’s not completely true. I tend to stay in hotels/motels on my fishing trips, but I know a lot of people prefer to camp on those kinds of trips. It always seemed to me like a lot of work and equipment for a little more time outdoors; however, for many camping is the main event. In my mind that means sleeping in a tent, but I guess it can also mean sleeping in an RV. The people who prefer the latter definition are likely customers of Camping World. The Bowling Green, KY based company is “the camping and recreational vehicle enthusiast’s one-stop-shop for everything they need to enjoy living in and traveling in their RV.” Camping may be in the name, but it seems to be all about the RV lifestyle.

When you get engaged, everybody tells you how much fun registry shopping is. I’m still waiting for the fun part. Just kidding. The fun part was doing our Amazon Registry, which had all of the cool kitchen gadgets that I wanted. When someone bought us something on that, I got really excited. I was a little bit less excited about our registries at Simon Pearce, Bloomingdale’s, and Restoration Hardware. I’m very grateful to everyone who bought us a gift from those registries, but a blowtorch is way better than a water pitcher in my book. Now let’s go back to that last place we registered: Restoration Hardware. That ended up being our least popular registry (in terms of % completed), which is surprising when you consider that the Corte Madera, CA “home furnishings retailer” made the Inc. 5000 with 91% three-year growth to $1.2 billion in revenue. While that growth rate is lower than what we’re accustomed to, we can make an excuse for a company that passed the billion dollar mark (and is no longer eligible for the list now that they have IPOed).

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Logo

Entering third grade was a big deal for me. It had nothing to do with school though. It was all about the fact that I was eligible to become a member of Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. That meant that a three minute walk from my house gave me access to bumper pool, ping pong, and basketball. I absolutely loved it. While it was mostly fun and games for me, I knew that there was more to the club than that. We were required to take our hats off when we entered the club, and all of the rules were enforced strictly, but fairly. It wasn’t a place to go and get into trouble. That’s exactly what Boys & Girls Clubs of America wants. They are an Atlanta, GA based national non-profit with clubs all across the country that aims to “promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.”

Right after I graduated college, I started investing in the stock market. I’ve more than doubled my money since then, which means that I made some pretty good decisions. One stock that I was considering at the time was CWTR. It was around $45 back then, and I thought that I had a few good reasons to believe that the stock would go up from there. Luckily, I didn’t buy. The stock is now at less than $4 per share–and that’s after a 4 for 1 reverse stock split. I’m glad that I avoided that -98% return on investment. While Coldwater Creek, which is based in Sandpoint, ID (with a design center New York, NY), has certainly struggled over the past 6 years, that doesn’t mean that you should overlook the potential opportunity. The multi-channel “specialty retailer of women’s apparel, jewelry and accessories” started as a one-room mail order business. They obviously had an amazing growth period that took them to going public, and now it’s time for them to get back on track.

Yesterday we looked at a chain of sandwich shops that started from a modest single location. Today we’re going to look at “a neighborhood boutique” that opened in 1935 and has grown to more than 1,000 locations across 37 states. The company is Rainbow Shops, and oddly enough, I’ve never heard of them. That’s not a bad thing considering that females are their target market and I don’t spend a lot of time in shopping malls. The Brooklyn, NY based retailer offers an “assortment of clothing for juniors, plus sizes, and children, as well as an extensive shoe collection.”

Before I discovered Bonobos, I used to actually buy clothes in retail stores. I guess you could say my style was preppy (and probably still is) considering the fact that I haven’t owned a pair of jeans since 7th grade. Back when I was still buying clothes in stores, J. Crew was the definition of preppy (barring Brooks Brothers of course), so that’s where I shopped. They seem to be making their image more “hipster” these days, but I’ll guess that’s based more on a change in fashion than a change in their target demographics. Anyway, J. Crew is a New York, NY based company that started with a catalog in 1983 and opened their first store in 1989. They’ve grown into an amazingly recognizable brand, and recently they’ve started growing another brand called Madewell.

I’ve finally found the secret to alchemy–cheap New Year’s party favors. Any decent restaurant can offer the same food they offer the rest of year, add a glass of cheap champagne, a cardboard hat with a rubber band strap, a noisemaker, and maybe a plastic necklace, and then charge $200 for their “New Year’s Even Party.” It’s brilliant considering that you can buy New Year’s Party Kits for less than a dollar per person from Party America, an Alameda, CA based chain of retail party supply stores. They offer “everything you’ll need for your New Year’s bash through Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Passover, Cinco de Mayo, Graduation, 4th of July, Labor Day Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah.” Party America’s Careers page offers info on both in-store and corporate positions. There’s no word on internships, but it’s still worth a try. Wounded Warrior Project

Last night Cornell played Michigan in an ice hockey game at Madison Square Garden. Cornell came out with a 5-1 win, which I was ecstatic about. The Big Red not only surprised its fans with a great performance after two pretty terrible weekends, but they also came out for the 2nd period in camo jerseys. I’m a traditionalist, so usually I’d be upset with any change to the team’s uniforms, but this was for an amazing cause. It was part of a fund and awareness raising effort for Wounded Warrior Project, which is a Jacksonville, FL based non-profit that aims “to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.” While I was enjoying a hockey game last night, there were men and women ten years younger than me risking life and limb to ensure my safety. The costs of war can be extreme, which is why it’s important that those of us who enjoy the safety provided by our service men and women do our best “to fulfill the needs of injured service members.” That’s what Wounded Warrior Project is about.

I’m in Ithaca, NY to have my engagement photos taken (finally). It’s a chilly, drizzly, grey day (which is surprisingly perfect for having photos taken outside according to the photographer). It’s typical weather for Ithaca, and it’s the opposite of everything that I would associate with the Pacific Sunwear brand, which is probably why they closed their location in a nearby mall. The Anaheim, CA based company is “dedicated to embracing the amazing diversity and unique sense of adventure that California offers at every turn based on this vast, yet attainable state.” Their name really says it all–the brand is indelibly to a climate and a geography.

Clear Channel Communications Logo

Yesterday I got back from an amazing trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks (for a friend’s wedding, I swear!). While I spent most of the time outside, I also spent a lot of time in the car driving from place to place or looking for wildlife (of course, we ran into the Grizzly bear while I was out of the car hiking). With all of the driving, we were lucky that the rental car was equipped with a SirusXM radio so Amy and I could reminisce by listening to 90s on 9. With the lack of billboards in the park and the satellite radio, I figured that I was out of the grip of Clear Channel Communications for at least a little bit. I was wrong. They even have stations on SiriusXM–Clear Channel, which is based in San Antonio, TX, is a media behemoth. If you’re in a car, and you’re not being reached by them, then you’re an exception. The company owns 850 radio stations and nearly 1 million outdoor advertising displays (think billboards). Unless your favorite radio station is NPR, there’s a very good chance that Clear Channel owns it.

My dad always tells people that he loves shopping malls because they are full of people who aren’t doing the things that he wants to do (namely fishing). My views aren’t quite so negative, but when I do visit a mall, my goal is to be in and out as quickly as possible. Luckily for General Growth Properties there are millions of people for whom malls are a destination. GGP is a Chicago, IL based real estate trust that owns and operates shopping centers across the U.S. Some of their most notable properties include: Ala Moana Center (Honolulu), Tysons Galleria (D.C.), Glendale Galleria (Los Angeles), and Water Tower Place (Chicago). That’s just the tip of the iceberg though–General Growth Properties owns more than 135 mall properties that combine for more than 140 million square feet of space.

Chloe + Isabel

There are essentially two completely different jewelry businesses. There’s the high-end business that is centered around gold, platinum, diamonds, and other gemstones (I know all about that having recently bought an engagement ring). Then there’s the fashion focused business that is more about completing an outfit. The latter is where Chloe + Isabel is focusing. They are a New York, NY based startup that targets 18 to 28 year old women with jewelry in the $18 to $200 price range. That’s not all that unique. What is unique is that Chloe + Isabel is approaching this market by combining direct selling with web-based social technology. Essentially they’re bringing affiliate marketing to a group of people who may not even know what affiliate marketing is.

Despite my outdoorsiness, I was never a boy scout. I’ll admit that I was a little jealous of the other kids when they came into school with their uniforms covered in patches, but I’m sure I earned plenty of patches as a kid–even if I never actually got patches (now I can buy them from Best Made Company). Still, I have a ton of respect for Boy Scouts of America. They’re an organization that has lasted more than a century by staying focused on a core set of values. They believe “that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society,” and they’ve continuously adapted the way that they’ve helped you to keep current. Boy Scouts of America is headquartered in Irving, TX, but they operate (and have job opportunities) all across the country.

I’m a strong believer in the theory of hipster relativity. If someone has more interesting facial hair than you, wears more plaid than you, or has thicker rimmed glasses than you, then he’s probably a hipster… at least to you. I’m pretty far up the chain (though I do have an affinity for plaid), which means that a whole lot of 20-somethings look like hipsters to me. The only thing I don’t get is where they get all of their cool hipster gear. I often walk by Urban Outfitters, and occasionally step inside. The store is packed with people and filled with what I consider to be hipster merchandise. This confuses me, because I know that no true hipster would shop somewhere so mainstream. I mean, Urban Outfitters, which is based in Philadelphia, PA, is publicly traded, has nearly 200 locations, and also owns Anthropologie, Free People, BHLDN, and Terrain. I guess the only loophole for a hipster shopping at Urban Outfitters is if you liked corporations before they were cool.

Even though I’m not a huge fan of turkey, I love Thanksgiving. It’s an all around great holiday for spending time with family and friends, and it gives me the opportunity to do some serious cooking. Some of my favorites are yams with marshmallows on top, brussels sprouts with bacon and onions, and apple pie. I’ve also been known to make a maple syrup slathered, bacon covered turkey, but I usually get overruled by people who inexplicably love bland, overcooked, dry white breast meat. I’m actually dying to try America Test Kitchen’s recipe, which includes brining and putting ice packs on the breasts so they cook slower than the rest of the bird. Anyway, I’ll likely be doing some shopping at Whole Foods Market this afternoon. I used to shop at normally priced supermarkets, but there’s one thing that keeps me coming back to bougie grocery stores like Whole Foods: bacon. You can’t get good quality bacon at a regular supermarket. And once you’re buying fancy bacon, you might as well get organic brussel sprouts and grass-fed beef and those awesome salted, chocolate-covered caramels that they sell.

I actually kind of liked taking standardized tests during my high school years, but now I’m glad that they’re 10 years in my past. While I imagine that the tests haven’t changed all that much in the past decade (beyond the SAT adding a section), test prep has. There are a ton of companies that have developed technology and systems for improving student performance on standardized tests. One of the big ones is Revolution Prep. They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’ve grown at a 211% rate over the past three-years to $18.8 million in revenue. This growth has been fueled by a “vision to transform education and provide the highest quality instruction to all students regardless of their ability to pay.” It’s pretty clear that Revolution Prep isn’t just about teaching students how to beat the test–they want to turn their students into better learners and thinkers.

I love hamburgers, but I wouldn’t eat a fast food burger even if it could make me fly. Luckily, better burger places are popping up all over the place. Some are local joints and some are chains, but they’re all working to remind us what a burger is supposed to be. Smashburger is taking a leading role in restoring dignity to hamburgers, although I can’t fully support a burger chain that won’t cook a burger medium-rare or even medium. They’re another Inc. 5000 company with 2,673% three-year growth from $1.4 million to $39.4 million in annual revenue. Smashburger is based out of Denver, CO and they have locations all across the country. They “start with 100% Angus Beef, smashed, seared and seasoned on the grill, placed on a butter-toasted artisan bun and topped with the highest-quality cheeses, freshest produce and condiments.”

Redbox

There aren’t many companies that have as many loyal fans as Netflix. I swear that everybody loves them. At least they did until yesterday when Netflix announced a change to their plans. They touted it as a good thing with their “lowest prices ever for unlimited DVDs,” but it really was a price increase for streaming subscribers. I guess yesterday was a good day for Redbox, which is based in Oakbrook Terrace, IL (with a major presence in Bellevue, WA). They operate more than 27,000 DVD and Blu-ray rental kiosks, or redboxes. Believe it or not, rentals aren’t dead, and Redbox has found a sweetspot between Blockbuster and Netflix. There’s definitely something I miss about the old school video rental shops–especially the pre-Blockbuster independent ones. But it’s mind blowing that Redbox is able to fit an entire video rental store in 12 square feet.

I was a senior in high school on September 11, 2001. We were told what had happened during our morning announcements period, and a few of who had free periods after went to the beach across the street from our school’s campus. We knew that on a clear day you could usually see the Twin Towers from there, but all we could see was a plume of smoke. We listened on the radio and heard reports of the towers falling and rumors of other attacks in the works. I was deeply affected by what happened that day, and since then I have been waiting for our country to bring Osama bin Laden to justice. Yesterday, a group of NAVY SEALs did just that under the command of the Central Intelligence Agency, which is based in Washington, DC but operates all over the world. I am extremely grateful to all of those who were involved–especially for those who risked their lives to make us safer. It’s a reminder of how important it is for our government agencies to have top talent working for them. WIthout great people working at the CIA and in our armed forces, bin Laden would still be at large.

There’s something special about non-profits that start on college campuses. They’re born with a sense of scrappiness and youthful idealism. It’s just the combination that can make amazing things happen. Nourish International in Chapel Hill, NC is a perfect example of this. It all started with a UNC student named Sindhura Citineni. She started a student group called “Hunger Lunch.” They’d sell “rice, beans and cornbread in the Pit for $3 and use the profits to fund Nourish’s first project: a nutrition project in Hyderabad, India.” Since then the mission has continued to be “to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities,” but they’ve certainly expanded their reach. Students raise money on campus throughout the year, and then they travel abroad in the summer to fund and conduct community development projects.

Happy Thanksgiving! In past years we’ve taken a look at internships at Pilgrim’s Pride and Jennie-O. This year we’ve been influenced by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, so we’re going to take a look at internships at Macy’s. They’re headquartered in both New York City and Cincinnati, and they are “one of the nation’s premier retailers, with fiscal 2009 sales of $23.5 billion.” The company operates more than 810 stores across 45 states. Over the past decade or so they’ve absorbed a number of other retailers, but the Macy’s brand has reigned supreme—and I bet the popularity of today’s parade has had at least a little something to do with it.

Trick or Vote

Now, Halloween isn’t the most internship search friendly holiday. Not only do you have to worry about incriminating pictures of you in your costume will be posted on Facebook, but you can’t exactly walk around from employer to employer and say, “Trick or Internship!” Still, Halloween is a $6 billion industry by itself, so you shouldn’t completely ignore it in your job search. However, it’s a Sunday which means that we’re looking at non-profit internships. It’s not as easy as you might think to find a non-profit that you can tie into Halloween. Last year we took a look at Children’s Dental Health Project, and this year we’re going to take a look at Portland, OR based Trick or Vote. They are a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that has volunteers “dress up in costume on Halloween and knock on doors in their neighborhoods reminding people to vote.”

Girls on the Run

I’m about to head out to watch some friends compete in the Chicago Marathon, so I though that I’d run with that theme. As I ran down the list of charities associated with the Chicago Marathon, I tried look for organizations that are not only use today’s event to support great causes, but also using running as part of their mission. Girls on the Run is a perfect fit. They are a nationwide organization based in Charlotte, NC that “educates and prepares girls for a life time of self-respect and healthy living.” They focus on training girls aged eight to thirteen years old for 3.1 mile/5k events with the main goal of encouraging “positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.” I’ve always hated running, but I totally understand why people like it—and watching 40,000 people compete in a marathon is a perfect example of what a great personal development tool it can be.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

I guess Labor Day isn’t such a great holiday when it’s just another day of looking for internships. And who likes the end of summer? On past Labor Days we looked at internships with the U.S. Department of Labor and Stetson, but today we’re going to talk about the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. They are “the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics.” That means that lately they’ve been the bearer of bad news, but they’re also essential to economic recovery. Without reliable statistics our policymakers can’t know what to do. Additionally, without the BLS, I wouldn’t have been able to write my Labor Economics research paper on the effect of deer hunting season on employment rates in the state of New York.
