Whenever I buy electronics, outdoors gear, or kitchen equipment, I do a ton of research. I want to ensure that I am buying the best that I can afford. It’s easy to spend hours on this stuff if you’re not careful. While that can be a form of entertainment for some people, it’s a lot of time to spend on something that might only cost a few hundred bucks. Have you ever heard the saying “You don’t know shit from Shinola!”? I haven’t heard it since I was a kid, and back then I had no idea what it meant. Today I learned that Shinola was a brand of shoe wax. The company went out of business more than 50 years ago, but a group of people still saw value in the brand. They bought it and turned Shinola into a company that is all about bringing back the strength of American manufacturing. Right now the Detroit, MI based “startup with the resources of a well-established corporation” is producing watches, bicycles, leather, and journals. By taking an iconic but defunct brand and turning it into something new and thriving in a city like Detroit, Shinola is making a huge statement about what they think American Made should mean.

I have a platonic man crush on Ramit Sethi. I’ve pretty much been stalking him since 2007 (when I started ODOJ) by subscribing to his blog, signing up for his e-mail list, reading his book, poring over his Delicious links, and buying one of his courses. We even met in person once. It was in the lobby of a trendy W hotel waiting for him, and when he walked up I played it cool by slamming my head into some stupid lamp that was hanging over the lounge chair that I was sitting on. Why am I so obsessed with some random Indian dude who is only a couple years older than me? Because he has built an amazing business that helps people achieve their career and financial dreams. I tend to gag at most of the advice that I hear from “career experts,” yet when I see something come from I Will Teach You To Be Rich (Ramit’s company–he used to have to reiterate that it’s not a scam because the name sounds so questionable), my eyes get all dreamy and I just start nodding in agreement. I occasionally even yell “YES!” at my computer.

I’m kind of obsessed with subscription based business models right now. I’ve been trying to come up with some new ones on my own, but I’ve also been investigating those that are already out there. One non-obvious (at least to me) subscription offering that seems to be gaining a lot of traction is underwear. There are a number of players in the market, so it must mean that people like getting new pairs of underwear on a regular basis. One of these companies is Me Undies. They’re based in Beverly Hills, CA, and they offer “the world’s most comfortable underwear in all your favorite colors and styles.” Oh yeah, and they do it at a way better price than designers who offer underwear of the same quality.

Unhelpful Google results are often the sign of a business opportunity. I started One Day One Job because I was frustrated with the junk that turned up when I’d search things like “entry level jobs” (there’s still a lot of junk out there, but I’m doing my best to bring more quality to the results). Though I’ve never researched leasing an office, I hear that doing so is even more frustrating than looking for a job online. (I just searched for an office in my neighborhood, and the #1 result looks like it’s from 1995.) 42Floors is a company that wants to finally bring the $25 billion office space/commercial real estate market online in a proper way. They’re based in San Francisco, CA, which couldn’t be a better place for this kind of business to get its start (the Bay Area is the only market they cover right now).

When I was a kid, I was a sucker for infomercials. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and learn all about amazing products like Colorcoat 2000, Ab Flex, Brown N Crisp, and, my favorite, The Flying Lure. Excluding the latter, these products all solved problems that I didn’t have, but I was still fascinated by them. I wish I could say it was because of my early love for marketing, but I was just a dumb kid who believed all of the outrageous claims. If I really wanted to learn about marketing and selling products on tv, I should have been watching HSN. The St. Petersburg, FL based company has built an amazing business by selling all kinds of things to people who are sitting on their couch. While infomercial hucksters have been burning people with products that don’t work, HSN has been cultivating relationships with loyal customers.

There are essentially two completely different jewelry businesses. There’s the high-end business that is centered around gold, platinum, diamonds, and other gemstones (I know all about that having recently bought an engagement ring). Then there’s the fashion focused business that is more about completing an outfit. The latter is where Chloe + Isabel is focusing. They are a New York, NY based startup that targets 18 to 28 year old women with jewelry in the $18 to $200 price range. That’s not all that unique. What is unique is that Chloe + Isabel is approaching this market by combining direct selling with web-based social technology. Essentially they’re bringing affiliate marketing to a group of people who may not even know what affiliate marketing is.

My last foreign language learning experience came in tenth grade French class. I found it mind numbingly boring even though we used French in Action, which was supposed to be a wonderful method for learning the language. If you can’t keep a student engaged, he or she will never learn the language. That’s why Voxy might be worth checking out for those of you who have had trouble learning languages through other methods. They’re based in New York, NY, and they offer “an exciting, award-winning way to learn a language from life.” How do they do this? They use web and mobile technologies to teach you a language while you’re doing things that you’d normally do–reading articles, playing games, or walking around your city. Not only does this make learning more fun, but it also makes it more useful. What you learn is based on the context of your life, so you’ll actually know why what you’re learning is useful.

Company names usually take one of two directions. They either explain exactly what the company does (i.e. Accuweather), or they tell you absolutely nothing about what the company does (i.e. Benzinga). There’s a third type that sounds totally random but actually has a significant meaning, and those tend to be my favorite. Underground Elephant is one of those names. The company is based in San Diego, CA, and they offer “a complete turnkey solution” for customer acquisition in “a wide range of vertical markets.” How is this relevant to their name? Underground Elephant plays a huge role in their clients’ businesses, yet their participation is essentially invisible to everyone but insiders.

As good as Thanksgiving is for coming up with interesting internship ideas, I prefer Black Friday because it’s centered around commerce and leads to more realistic ideas. Seriously, just open up the newspaper and look at all the ads–you’ll find seemingly endless possibilities. Some of the companies that we’ve featured in the past that are extra relevant today include Amazon, Ernst & Young (you know why they call it Black Friday, right?), Visa, Fatwallet, Slickdeals, Savings.com, LivingSocial, and Groupon. Today we’re going to stick with the discount theme and take a look at CouponCabin. They’re a Whiting, IN based company that searches “tens of thousands of consumer emails, online forums, blogs, and merchant sites each week and even the Sunday newspaper to create a true one-stop-shop for savings.” They were formerly based in Chicago, IL, but they had to move across state lines (they’re still close to Chicago) because of an idiotic tax law that the state of Illinois passed.

I can’t tell you how much money I’ve saved by being a savvy shopper. Doing something as simple as Googling for coupon codes or looking up discount programs has saved me money time after time. I’m by no means fanatical about this stuff (and I try to avoid buying stuff just because it’s on sale), but there are a ton of people who get really excited about finding deals. Many of them flock to online communities for deal sharing like Fatwallet, Slickdeals, and Savings.com. Whether you’re looking for a specific deal or just want to see what bargains are available right now, Los Angeles, CA based Savings.com offers that kind of information. You may wonder how a site that is focused on serving people who self-identify as being cheap makes money, but there’s no question that doesn’t seem to be a problem for Savings.com considering that they made the Inc. 5000 with 2,077% three-year growth to $19.9 million in revenue.

Today is my favorite day of the year, at least when it comes to writing daily company profiles. Why? Inc. Magazine just released the 2011 Inc. 5000 List. It’s a ranking of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in the United States. It includes all kind of businesses in locations all across the country. It’s one of the best internship seeker resources out there. As I looked through the list I saw a lot of companies that I’ve already written about and a lot of new ones that don’t have any positions posted. Then I saw Leadnomics–they came in at #48 with 3,932% 3-year revenue growth to $5.8 million in revenue last year. The lead generation and performance marketing company is based in Philadelphia, PA, and they’ve been growing rapidly in terms of both revenue and headcount.

One of the most effective ways to monetize a website is through affiliate marketing. The basic premise is that a site advertises a specific product or service, and gets paid based on a desired action (a purchase or sign up for example). It makes sense for advertisers because they only pay for advertising when they get exactly what they want (not just eyeballs). It makes sense for website owners, because they get rewarded for putting the right products in front of the right audiences. And it even works for web surfers, since they get to see more relevant (and less annoying) advertising.

In fact, a lot of our revenue comes from affiliate marketing. If you buy from Amazon after clicking one of our links, we get a percentage of the purchase. Advertising is supposed to deliver results, but for the longest time it was nearly impossible to tell whether an ad was actually performing as it should. The Internet has changed that, and it’s caused problems for lots of businesses that rely on ad sales for revenue. However, there are plenty of other businesses that are reacting quickly to these market changes and giving advertisers what they want. One of these companies is ConsumerTrack, which is based in El Segundo, CA. They specialize “in creating, managing, optimizing and monetizing marketing campaigns for a variety of companies ranging from small lenders and finance groups, to Fortune 500 banks and blue chip companies.” These aren’t just any marketing campaigns though, they’re designed in a way to ensure that clients are getting a maximum return on investment for their advertising dollars.

Since the deal above is for the guys (or girls who are buying gifts for their guys), we might as well take a look at a company that is a bit more targeted to the girls. And since it’s Cyber Monday, it only makes sense to focus on something that’s e-commerce related. That’s why we’re taking a look at Prospectiv. They’re a Wakefield, MA based company that specializes in “connecting brands with customers,” and they do that with a strong focus on customers who also happen to be women. Prospectiv’s specialty is online performance marketing, so they’re primed for even more success moving forward. Currently they’re generating “more than 50 million pre-qualified leads per year on a pay-for-results basis for clients, including many Fortune 1000 companies such as Procter and Gamble, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Disney, Nestle and Schering-Plough.” That’s an amazing number, and I bet it’s only going to go up.

It’s 8 AM on Black Friday, and I haven’t bought anything yet. I guess that I’m more interested in Cyber Monday when I can find great deals online. On previous Black Fridays we’ve taken a look at internships with companies like Ernst & Young (because today is when companies are finally “in the black”) and Visa (since you’ll probably be swiping yours like crazy today). I wish I had been able to feature Slickdeals on a previous Black Friday, but they had some cool opportunities in August of 2009, so I jumped the gun. Today, our focus is going to be on Rockton, IL based Fatwallet, which is a very similar site to Slickdeals—both focus on saving you money when you shop. Fatwallet puts a pretty big emphasis on Black Friday Deals, but what makes the site great is that they help shoppers find amazing deals every day.

One of the fun things about researching companies every day is that sometimes I get to learn more about my neighbors. If I hadn’t been cruising through the Inc 500, I probably never would have taken a second look at the building just a block from me, which I can see right now out my office window. However, it happens to house Rise Interactive, a Chicago, IL based “full-service Internet marketing company” that services “companies of all sizes, from startups to the Fortune 500.” They’ve seen 658% growth over the past three, and that led them to $2.6 million in annual revenue last year. Their site isn’t as flashy as many of the interactive agencies that we’ve featured in the past, but that makes sense when you look at the services that they offer—they seem much more focused on results-based areas like SEO, Paid Search, Display Advertising, and Affiliate Marketing.

You probably don’t even notice it happening around you, but the world of marketing is changing. Companies used to pay to be seen, then they started paying for clicks. Now it’s all about pay for performance. Advertisers want to know that they’re getting a significant return on their investment. Largo, FL (it’s near Tampa, not Key Largo) based The Media Crew is yet another Inc. 500 company that is growing quickly because they see the future. The Media Crew has been around since 1999, but they’ve really experienced great growth over the past three years—810% to $4.5 million in annual revenue, if you want to be exact. By helping generate leads for other businesses, they’ve been able to become a substantial business on their own.

Neutron Interactive is a Salt Lake City based interactive agency that is taking online business to the next level. Neutron Interactive is an Inc 500 company that has grown 812% over the past three years. Their annual revenue was $9.5 million last year, so they’re quite big when compared to many of the other interactive agencies that also made the list.

I don’t do a ton of shopping, but when I do, I almost always buy stuff online. It’s become way too easy not to do. It’s also usually significantly cheaper. I used to shop around a lot online, but I’ve gotten to the point where if Amazon stocks the item, I go with them. They almost always have the best prices, and they’re as reliable as can be (and having free 2-day shipping from Amazon Prime doesn’t hurt—by the way, I think it’s now “>free for students). If you’re not as trusting, and you really want to find the best price, then you’re probably going to want to use a comparison shopping site. Become.com, which is based in Sunnyvale, CA, is one of the big ones. They get millions of unique visitors every month, and they have tens of millions of dollars in investment from a variety of firms. The cool thing about their business is that all they do is provide information. They don’t actually sell anything, but they get a cut of every sale that they refer through affiliate programs.

We all learn at an early age that we can’t have our cake and eat it too. Everything has a trade off. You can have money or you can have stuff. You can’t have both. Right? Wrong. Since 1999 Las Vegas based Slickdeals has been proving that you can have your cake and eat it too. Or as they put it, “Slickdeals.net is a free, user-driven deal sharing site with a mission to provide consumers an avenue to collaborate and share information in order to make the best shopping decisions.” That’s a fancy way of saying that they are a community of people who help each other find the best deals, so you can buy stuff and have some money left over. In fact, a lot of Slickdeals users find deals so good that they get paid to buy something (after rebate). Seriously. It’s all about free and open sharing of information, and it’s amazingly powerful. The amount of money that people have saved through Slickdeals has to be staggering.

Buying a product online is easy when you know which specific brand and model you want, but finding the microwave with the largest capacity or an LCD TV that swivels isn’t always so easy. There’s so much information out there on products, that finding specific details that are important to you (but not everyone else) can be frustrating. Wize is a San Mateo, CA based startup that is trying to make online comparison shopping more intelligent. If you’re buying on price, you already have plenty of product search engines that will make your decision easy for you, but who’s going to tell you which washing machine is most water efficient? That’s what Wize is all about. They’re scouring the Internet for all of the information that is buried in reviews and making it easily searchable so that you can choose the right product for you. It’s still in its early stages, but it seems like a pretty cool approach to e-commerce.

At some point during my Junior year in college (by the way I’m back at Cornell for the weekend), I got the bright idea that I could wear slippers as shoes. These weren’t flimsy slippers, these were sturdy leather ones with shearling lining. They were made by Orvis (where I interned and had an awesome 50% employee discount), and they were great. I loved sitting in class knowing that my feet were more comfortable than everybody else’s. Then I came back from Thanksgiving break. I was admiring the Christmas lights that my roommates had adorned our otherwise aesthetically unpleasing house with, and I slipped. See, my slippers had flat rubber soles. My feet came out from under me as I fell down a muddy slope. My right hand came down hard on the sidewalk, and I had a broken wrist. I gave up wearing slippers for a while, but when my Mom bought me a pair of UGG slippers with proper soles, I reverted. Now UGG slippers are my go to shoes during the winter, and I’m a huge fan of Deckers Outdoor Corporation. They’re the company behind UGG, Simple, Teva (is it Tee-va or Tevv-a?), Tsubo, and Deckers, and they’re headquartered in Goleta, CA with a location in Flagstaff, AZ as well.

Jeremy Schoemaker is ShoeMoney. ShoeMoney is probably best known for his picture of the check. Using AdSense, Google’s advertising platform for web publishers, he made $132,994.97 in one month. Since then, he’s had amazing success with marketing ringtones through affiliate deals and a project called AuctionAds, which allows web publishers to market eBay auctions on their sites. There are a lot of web startups that seem glamorous because of their big ideas, but they often lack profitability and end up in the deadpool. ShoeMoney Media Group ignores the glitz and goes where the money is. They follow 3 core principles: embrace new trends and look for opportunities to exploit them; focus on what you know; and small changes can equal big revenue. There is an absolutely insane amount of information about ShoeMoney on the web, so get researching. Google ShoeMoney, visit ShoeMoney’s blog, and read his hilarious, but honest post about his 10 worst money making ideas. There’s also a short BusinessWeek article about ShoeMoney that you should read. It focuses on how he makes money online teaching other people how to make money online.

When I hear the name Pepperjam, the first thing that comes to my mind is the television show Pepper Ann from One Saturday Morning. That’s actually really embarrassing to admit, but I hope that you’ll overlook it when you see how cool of a company Pepperjam is. They have “Free Pizza Fridays, Ping Pong, video games (ie: Nintendo Wii, Guitar Hero), free Red Bull and music all day.” Now forget that I admitted to ever knowing anything about the show Pepper Ann.
