BidPal

by on October 28, 2013

InvestmentNews is our sponsor this week, and they would like to tell you about their NextGen Virtual Career Fair on November 8th. It’s an awesome opportunity for students and interns to network and find finance jobs on the spot.

I often find charity events frustrating. It’s not the events themselves that bother me–it’s the auctions and raffles. Non-profits have an amazing ability to get all kinds of high value donations (which should be the hard part), but they completely fail when it comes to extracting as much value as possible out of those donations. It could be an inexperienced auctioneer, poorly priced raffle tickets, a confusing silent auction, or a complicated payment process. Technology can solve a lot of these problems, and that’s exactly what BidPal has done. They’re an Indianapolis, IN based company that “improves charitable fundraising events from start to finish with event management solutions, automated auctions, payment processing, online fundraising, consulting services, and much, much more.” BidPal actually came in at #74 on this year’s Inc. 5000 with 4,323% three-year growth to $10.2 million in revenue.

Livestream

Livestream Logo

There’s nothing like a live event, but we often can’t be where we want to be. The Internet has made things a little easier. Today video, audio, or commentary from any event can be shared all across the world as it’s happening. It took a while to get to the point where it’s reliable, but we’re mostly there. Livestream is a New York, NY based company that has played a big part in moving us forward when it comes to streaming live content. They offer “event owners a complete set of hardware and software tools to share their events with a growing community online.” This has led them to #750 on the Inc. 5000 with 613% three-year growth to $18.9 million in revenue.

WP Engine

WP Engine Logo

From the beginning One Day One Job has been built on top of WordPress. To many it’s simple blogging software, but it’s amazing how far you can take it with a little bit of tweaking. The problem with self-hosted WordPress (as opposed to WordPress.com) is that it requires running your own server. You can find a host that makes it easy to get started, but as soon as your site starts to grow, you’ll run into problem after problem. I used to spend at least a week’s worth of workdays every year worrying about server stuff (downtime, optimization, security, and all kinds of other details). That all changed when I moved my sites to WP Engine. They are an Austin, TX based company that “host tens of thousands of the 75 million WordPress sites and apps on Earth.” I’ve had almost zero downtime since I switched, but more importantly, I no longer worry about my server configuration (and I’m even paying less than I used to for hosting).

iRobot

by on May 21, 2013

iRobot Logo

In the 80s and early 90s it was popular to foretell that we were only a few years away from having robots ingrained in our daily lives. That obviously didn’t happen. Even with today’s technology, a seemingly sentient robot like Screech from Saved by the Bell’s Kevin is unrealistic, but we’ve made a ton of progress. There are robots that sweep floors, wash floors, clean gutters, clean pools, dispose of bombs, and lots more. iRobot makes robots that do all of those things, and much more. The company is based in Beford, MA and “was founded in 1990 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology roboticists with the vision of making practical robots a reality.” That reality is finally here.

Desmos

Desmos Logo

I made it from seventh grade through college with a single TI-83, who wants to touch me? Maybe it’s because I went to a private school where people were careless with $80 devices (they’re about $95 on Amazon now), but I swear everybody I knew either lost, broke, or had theirs stolen at least twice. While the need for students to have a graphing calculator hasn’t changed, the need for a standalone device has. That’s why we’re going to celebrate Pi Day by looking at Desmos (on past Pi Days we’ve looked at Pi Media, The Mathematical Association of America, and Orbotix–one of my favorites). They’re a San Francisco, CA based startup that offers a free online graphing calculator for students, teachers, and anyone interested in math.

Liquidity Services Inc.

Liquidity Services Logo

Have you ever wondered where merchandise goes when you return it to a retailer? If it’s unopened, it probably goes right back on the floor, but most stores won’t risk restocking goods that are no longer pristinely packaged. Instead they send it off to a warehouse to be tested, repackaged, and sold off in bulk. But how do you sell a pallet of returned merchandise? You use Liquidity Services Inc. (here’s a video explaining how it works). They’re a Washington, D.C. based company that enables “businesses and government agencies to manage, value, redeploy, and sell excess inventory and surplus assets using the world’s most transparent, innovative, and effective online marketplaces and integrated services.” Put a little more simply, they help clients sell stuff that is typically hard to sell. Returned merchandise is just a small part of the business.

Belvedere Trading

Belvedere Trading Logo

I hear from a lot of you that you want a career that makes the world a better place, but I know that some of you just want to make money (even if you’re afraid to admit it). If one were to design a business to generate profits as efficiently as possible, it would probably look a lot like a proprietary trading firm. A prop firm is one that doesn’t have any outside investors, so it can focus entirely on generating profits for itself without the worry that investors might want to pull their money out. Belvedere Trading is one of these firms (others that we’ve featured include Wolverine Trading and Jump Trading). They’re based in Chicago, IL, and they’ve been specializing “in equity index and commodity derivatives” since 2002. Basically, they find inefficiencies in the market, and profit from them through superior strategy and technology.

Elemental Technologies

Elemental Technologies Logo

I have to admit that this year’s version of the Inc. 5000 has disappointed me so far. Maybe it’s because I’ve already covered many of the most interesting companies in the top 50 (Acquia, Red Frog Events, Nasty Gal, Leadnomics, Spongecell, and Gemvara), but a lot of the other businesses at the top of the list don’t even have Careers pages. That doesn’t mean that you can’t reach out to them if you find them interesting, but I’m not going to do a write up on them unless their stories are super compelling. After looking through the first 51 companies, I came across Elemental Technologies at #52. They’re a Portland, OR based company that has achieved 4,518% three-year growth by being “the leading supplier of video processing solutions for multiscreen delivery.” What does that mean? Elemental Technologies develops technology that enables media companies to deliver the same video content experience across a variety of devices.

Lookout Mobile Security Logo

If you’re like me, your phone is your life. It’s not that I use it all the time like some people–it’s just that nearly everything important to me is accessible through my phone. The only possession more vital to my everyday life is my laptop. I back up my phone regularly and use Apple’s Find My iPhone, but I could probably do more to protect my phone and all of the information on it. Lookout Mobile Security is a San Francisco, CA based company that is “dedicated to making the mobile experience safe for everyone.” They offer a complete suite of software and cloud based tools to ensure that your investment in your phone (mostly what you have on it) is as protected as it can possibly be.

HSN

We’ve spent the last six months working on making One Day One Job more relevant to your search (it includes internships now). Learn how to find an internship faster using our new features.

HSN Logo

When I was a kid, I was a sucker for infomercials. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and learn all about amazing products like Colorcoat 2000, Ab Flex, Brown N Crisp, and, my favorite, The Flying Lure. Excluding the latter, these products all solved problems that I didn’t have, but I was still fascinated by them. I wish I could say it was because of my early love for marketing, but I was just a dumb kid who believed all of the outrageous claims. If I really wanted to learn about marketing and selling products on tv, I should have been watching HSN. The St. Petersburg, FL based company has built an amazing business by selling all kinds of things to people who are sitting on their couch. While infomercial hucksters have been burning people with products that don’t work, HSN has been cultivating relationships with loyal customers.

Instructure

by on May 2, 2012

Instructure Logo

When you’re a kid, you think that teachers have an easy job. They have good hours, lots of vacation with summers off, and they get to stand in front of a room and tell you what to do. As you get older, you start to realize that teaching also includes grading papers, planning lessons, communicating with parents, writing comments for report cards, and a whole lot more. A grade book just isn’t a good hub for managing all of this. Teachers need something industrial-strength, and that’s what Instructure provides with their Canvas Learning Management System. The Sandy, UT based company offers a suite of tools that enable teachers to spend way less time on administrative stuff, and more time teaching and working directly with students. They serve educators at all levels–from Kindergarten to some of the world’s top universities, which shows you just how flexible the Canvas platform is.

FlightAware

by on December 1, 2011

Whether you need something to wear for a job interview or a tropical vacation, Gilt is the place to get it at a good price. Here’s a link that will get you an additional 20% off.

FlightAware Logo

In my previous life as the boyfriend of a management consultant, I would often spend my Thursday evenings using a flight tracking website to figure out when I’d be eating dinner. Those days are mostly over now that Amy is working at Groupon, but I had a bit of a flashback since she is traveling for work this week. My preferred flight tracking website is FlightAware, which tells me that she’s somewhere just south of the Great Salt Lake right now. I also know that she’s moving at 459 knots at an altitude of 35,000 feet. I can even see that the fares for her flight ranged from $50.03 to $3,365.92 with an average of $238.13. FlightAware is based in Houston, TX, and they provide “live flight data, airport information, weather maps, flight planning, and navigation charts, as well as aviation news and photos to over two million users a month.” I have no idea how they get all of their data, but it’s extremely useful and very easy to access.

Free Software Foundation

by on November 12, 2011

Free Software Foundation Logo

Today is One Day One Job’s 4th anniversary. In that time we’ve reached millions of job seekers, helped a lot of grads land jobs that they wouldn’t have found without us, and even attained profitability. I’ll be sending out an e-mail with more on that topic, but I wanted to take today to write about a non-profit that helped make One Day One Job possible. I had never heard of the Free Software Foundation when I launched the site, but I’ve come to realize that I couldn’t have done what I’ve done without them. They’re a Boston, MA based “nonprofit with a worldwide mission to promote computer user freedom and to defend the rights of all free software users.” Without free software like Linux, Apache, and WordPress, I probably would have run out of money before I started. While the FSF isn’t actually behind these projects, they’ve done an amazing amount of work to support the free software ecosystem.

Cvent Logo

My girlfriend and I are having a housewarming/birthday party this weekend. We invited people by e-mail, and we’re keeping of track of who is coming through a Google doc. That’s about as simple as it gets in terms of using software for event management. I don’t think our solution would cut it for companies like Verizon, Yahoo!, Walmart, and Oracle. They need something a little more… industrial strength. That’s what Cvent offers. They’re a McLean, VA based company that offers comprehensive event, survey, and eMarketing software solutions–exactly what large companies need to make sure that every little detail is taken care of when they put on an event.

beRecruited

by on July 8, 2011

beRecruited Logo

There’s a VHS tape that I’ve been trying to get my hands on for a while. It’s my girlfriend’s recruiting video that she sent to colleges when she was in high school (she ended up playing volleyball for Cornell and winning three Ivy League Championships!). It’s the ultimate blackmail material. College athletic recruiting has come a long way since then. Much of the communication between coaches and prospective athletes happens over the Internet, but managing those communications can be a tall task for parents and students that haven’t been through the process before. beRecruited is a site that has been connecting high school athletes with college coaches since 2000. The site has over 1 million registered members, and apparently 68% of college coaches have signed up for the site. beRecruited appears to be located in both Atlanta, GA and San Francisco, CA.

Tagged

by on November 10, 2010

Tagged Logo

Because my business is almost entirely online, I’m always meeting new people through e-mail and social networks. Eventually, I end up meeting many of these people in real life. I guess that’s becoming more and more normal, but I know that plenty of people are still weirded out by people who meet online. Not the people who use Tagged, which is “social network where the focus is on meeting new people.” The company is based in San Francisco, CA, and they made the Inc. 500 with 637% three-year growth and $22.7 million in revenue. It may not be Facebook, but Tagged has 100 million users and gets 4 million daily unique visitors. By offering features like “social games, friend suggestions, browsing profiles, group interests and much more,” Tagged has created a unique online environment for making new friends. It seems to be paying off for them.
