How do you make any sport better? Put the word “arena” in front of it! Arena Soccer, arena badminton, arena fishing, arena skydiving… you get the idea. Putting “arena” in front of a sport’s name is only second to putting “extreme” in front of it. Well one of the sports that actually works (not necessarily better) in an arena is football. The Arena Football League is exciting to watch and offers an option for the football junkies who are bored to tears in the offseason. As of now they’re strictly a brick and mortar operation, although it looks like they might be moving towards an online store at some point. As we continue to help you in your hunt for last minute internships, you need to remember that our daily posts are just jumping off points for your internship hunt. Just because the company that we feature isn’t near where you live or isn’t in the industry that you want to work in doesn’t mean that you should pass over it. Think about similar companies or fields and use the ideas that you come up with to formulate your own internship search plan. For instance, we are looking at internships at Wild Waves Theme Park in Federal Way, WA today. There may not be a ton of you out there who live near Wild Waves, but there’s a good chance that many of you live a commutable distance from a theme park. Use the job search techniques that we’ve taught you and see if you can find an internship at your local theme park.
Whether you’re looking for summer jobs or internships, theme parks are a great place to look because they’re always hiring college students. Theme parks are generally large operations, so there’s more to working for them than taking tickets, selling hot dogs, or dressing up as a character in a costume that is 140 degrees on the inside. Wild Waves Theme Park is looking for interns in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Food Service, Information Technology, and Retail. The only specific information that we could find about individual internships were job postings for their IT Internship, Marketing Internship, and Finance Internship. From those postings you can apply directly for the internships. We’re not quite sure if the other internships are still available, as they’re not listed in Wild Waves’ job openings, so your best bet is to fill out a general application and to state your desired internship. You could also try calling 253-661-8027, which appears to be the phone number for their HR office.

It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP’s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. Fellowship Programs are the new big thing for college graduates. There are quite a few highly competitive programs like Teach for America, New York City Teaching Fellows, and The New Teacher Project that focus on turning new college grads into teachers in low-income public schools. What about coaching? Athletics has become significantly linked to education in America, and it is also one of the few areas where low-income schools can be on par with their well funded counterparts. Sounds to us like there’s an opportunity to initiate change there. Coaches often seem more accessible to students than teachers are, so why not put the same types of young leaders that are being recruited as teachers in coaching positions at high needs schools and see what happens?
