We don’t even know where to get started, for we’re a bit overwhelmed. The Smithsonian Institution has the most comprehensive internships website that we have ever come across. If you don’t already know, the Smithsonian is an institution that was founded by a gift from a British Scientist named James Smithson.

I then bequeath the whole of my property…to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge…

He had never been to America, so it’s quite puzzling that he made such a gift. Some people say it was his final swipe at the rigidities of British society. Since the gift was made to our federal government, the Smithsonian is a government institution (not a non-profit organization, like you might have thought it was). You will find the Smithsonian working in a wide variety of areas to increase the knowledge of the American people, and this means that they have internships in a jaw dropping number of fields. Ok, we realize that today’s internships are going to sound a lot like yesterdays. While the Heritage Foundation identifies itself as a conservative thinktank, The Cato Institute considers itself more of a non-profit libertarian public policy research foundation. We usually wouldn’t repeat, but we were running down the list of Greg Mankiw approved internships, and Cato’s internship website blew us away. It’s fantastic. Their deadline for Fall internships is July 1, so we couldn’t even save them for next weekend if we wanted to. Continue reading about Cato Institute…

The Heritage Foundation

I’m kind of a nerd - I really like reading Economics blogs. So I was delighted to come a cross a a post about internships on Greg Mankiw’s Blog. He’s certainly one of my favorite Econ bloggers (and he’s a Harvard professor), so I value his internship recommendations quite highly. Unfortunately I came across his post when the deadlines had passed for Summer internships at many of the organizations he named. I made note of this, and now that we’re looking at Fall internships, I’ve decided to return to some of the ideas Dr. Mankiw shared. Today we’re going to look at The Heritage Foundation,

a research and educational institute - a think tank - whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

Thinking about Interning at a Think Tank?

Think tanks offer some of the most competitive internship programs out there. The Heritage Foundation is no exception. They take 30 interns in both the Fall and Spring. The deadline to apply for their Fall internships is July 1 and the deadline to apply for Spring internships is November 1. You can find all the details about the application process here. We’ve heard that Summer interns at Heritage are paid and that Fall and Spring interns get a travel stipend instead, but we can’t verify this. We do know that the Heritage Foundation does offer its interns housing.

The Heritage Foundation allows interns to work in a wide variety of departments including Accounting, Asian Studies, Center for American Studies, Center for Data Analysis, Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, Coalition Relations, Communications and Marketing, Development, Domestic Policy, the Executive Offices, External Relations, Foreign Policy, Government Relations, Information Systems, Lectures and Seminars, Online Communications, Personnel, Publishing Services, and Special Events.

It’s getting late. Many internships have already started, and others are starting in the next few weeks. We’re doing our best to continue finding great internship opportunities for this summer, but it’s getting harder to find internships that are worth writing about (if you know any companies that are still hiring interns for this summer, please contact us). At this point the best bet is to go local, and one employer that often takes on summer interns is the local government. That’s why we’re looking at the Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology and its internship program today. Continue reading about Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology…

Summers are meant to be spent outside. Unfortunately, there aren’t many internships that allow that. If you’re an underclassmen, you can probably get away with taking a summer job like the one I took weed whacking and filling in potholes after my Freshman year, but as you move towards graduation, you need at least one solid internship on your resume. For many college students it can be disconcerting to sit in a cubicle all summer, so at the very least you should look for an internship with an escape route - unless of course the only tan you plan to get is from the glow of your computer screen. There aren’t many internships that offer a better mix of outdoor opportunities and real world experience than those at the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Federal Reserve Board

“May you live in interesting times.” It’s allegedly a translation of a Chinese proverb, but Wikipedia can’t even figure out who actually said it first. Regardless, an internship at the Federal Reserve Board should be extremely “interesting” over the next year (at the very least). With Bear Stearns almost falling into bankruptcy, and a lot of other investment banks in trouble, an internship in finance doesn’t look nearly as attractive as it did last semester. Still, if you’re interested in economics, finance, or a related field, a job at the Federal Reserve Board is a great alternative. Although connected to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Federal Reserve Board is a different entity. If you don’t already know, the Fed, which is led by Chairman Ben Bernanke, is responsible for crafting the monetary policy that supports the American economy. Council of Economic Advisers

The President’s Council of Economic Advisers is exactly what you’d expect it to be, a group of economists who advise the President on economic matters and drive the policy that the President pursues. The current Chairman is Edward Lazear (he wrote one of the more interesting economics textbooks that I encountered in college), and former Chairs include Ben Bernanke (current Chairman of the Fed) and N. Gregory Mankiw (a Harvard professor and one of my favorite bloggers). You can see that the council is a collection of the finest minds in economics; hence, an internship with the CEA is just what any budding economist needs to get started. Whether you’re looking to go into finance, government, or academia, there are few better opportunities. Continue reading about Council of Economic Advisers…

Kids are often more realistic about their career aspirations than adults are. They want to be firefighters, policemen, and teachers - professions that are in constant, steady demand. More ambitious children might want a job as a doctor or veterinarian - still steady, but requiring a significant investment in education. The one exception is the kids who wanted to be astronauts. Since the beginning of the space program, there have only been 321 astronauts selected. Ever. Becoming an astronaut isn’t easy, but you don’t need to take one specific path to be selected as an astronaut - pilots, schoolteachers, doctors, scientist, and engineers have all been astronauts. Whether you’re working towards becoming an astronaut or you’re looking to have a meaningful impact on the space program NASA has a variety of interesting internships; in fact, we could spend the next week featuring individual NASA internships.
