I never pictured myself doing yoga, but one day my back started hurting. My mom told me to see her trainer and do a yoga session with her. It wasn’t some magical cure-all like some people might claim, but it definitely helped. I ended up really liking the physical part (stretching and bodyweight exercise), but the rest just isn’t for me; however, it is for a lot of people. Yoga has exploded in popularity, and now pretty much anyone who wants to can claim to be a yoga instructor. Yoga Alliance is an Arlington, VA non-profit that exists “to sustain and support the field of yoga.” They do this by “by providing the public with a registry of teachers and schools whose training meets our standards, and by supporting yoga teachers, schools and studios in their work as yoga professionals.”

Consumer Electronics Association Logo

In case you haven’t noticed, we always feature non-profits on weekend. The vast majority of the non-profits that we profile are 501(c)(3)–organizations defined as “Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals.” But there are actually 28 types of 501(c) tax-exempt non-profit organizations. Today we’re going to look at the Consumer Electronics Association, which is 501(c)(6) “business league” based in Arlington, VA. They have a simple mission of working with their 2,000+ industry members to “grow the consumer electronics industry.”

Do You Consume Electronics?

You’ve probably heard of the Consumer Electronics Show (if not, it’s a massive electronics show), it’s put on by the CEA. It’s a way for all of their members (pretty much every major brand in the industry) to show off the latest and greatest. The show is probably the most public thing that the CEA does, but they also have a number of other initiatives. These include Market Research, Networking Events, Policy Advocacy, Technical Training, Technology Standards, and Member to Member Promotion. It’s interesting to see many of the CEA’s members fighting tooth and nail against each other in the marketplace, and then seeing them work together for the betterment of the industry. For the most part illness is an individual problem. You get sick, you go to a doctor if it’s serious enough, and it eventually gets better with or without treatment. But sometimes your illness can be a public health issue. If you get something like influenza or food poisoning, there’s a good chance that information about your illness could help lots of other people stay healthy. At times like these “when new health risks emerge or well-known problems re-emerge, it is public health laboratories that analyze the threat and provide the answers needed to mount an effective response.” The Association of Public Health Laboratories is a non-profit organization based in Silver Spring, MD that “works to strengthen laboratories serving the public’s health in the US and globally.” The organization’s membership spans across all kinds of laboratories ranging from the public health labs mentioned in their name to environmental and agricultural labs. Many are government labs, but there are also corporate and non-profit labs included.

National Christmas Tree Association Logo

It’s Christmas Eve! This was the first year that I’ve had a Christmas tree in my apartment in Chicago. Unfortunately, it isn’t a real tree. It isn’t even a decent fake tree. It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. That’s a far cry from the Christmas trees that my family cuts down every year. There’s nothing better than a real tree–it looks great, smells great, and gets needles everywhere. I feel that everybody should have a real Christmas tree (even if they don’t celebrate Christmas), and so does the National Christmas Tree Association in Chesterfield, MO. They are a lobbying organization that “strives to be one voice representing Christmas Tree Professionals and promoting the use of Real Christmas Trees.” They have more than 5,000 members, and they’re constantly working to protect the interest of Christmas tree farmers by promoting the industry, lobbying the Federal government, and enabling knowledge sharing. Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Logo

If you watch the news enough, there’s a good chance that you’ll never want to leave the house. The world is a dangerous place, and things like terrorist attacks, Black Friday stampedes, and infectious diseases are out there waiting for us. Obviously most of these dangers are overhyped—but who knows what to believe and what not to believe? Hopefully our public health agencies and their employees. They’re the ones that we need to be well informed and well connected, which is why the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials exists. It’s a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that is “dedicated to formulating and influencing sound public health policy and to assuring excellence in state-based public health practice.” They do this by bringing public health officials together and keeping them connected.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Logo

We’ve all had one (if not quite a few more than one). A bad teacher. It happens. It’s part of school. In fact, everyone should have a bad teacher at some point. It teaches you how to persevere. But many kids get more than their fair share of bad teachers. And that’s why education is seen as such a major issue in this country. There just aren’t enough good teachers. Now, I’m usually leery of standards and certifications because they’re used by insiders to keep new people out and control the labor market, but today we’re going to take a look at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, an Arlington, VA based non-profit organization. They are “dedicated to improving the teaching profession and positively impacting student learning,” and they do this by “maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.”

National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare Logo

I’ve done a good amount of traveling this summer, and it just so happens that a number of the cities that I’ve visited have significant homeless populations. San Diego stands out the most, but there’s also Denver, San Francisco, and my home, Chicago. It showed me how serious mental health issues can become for individuals and communities. Obviously, mental health issues affect people from all walks of life, but with the homeless it’s visible in a way that most other mental health issues aren’t. The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare is a Washington, DC based organization that acts as “the unifying voice of America’s behavioral health organizations.” They support more than 1,700 member organizations and serve the “more than 6 million adults and children with mental illnesses and addiction disorders.”

Association Headquarters Logo

I recently took a call from the International Association of Employment Web Sites (IAEWS). They want me to join their organization, which is a trade organization for employment related websites. I’m certainly considering it, but I haven’t quite decided whether the annual dues will be worth the investment in the short run (and that’s what you’re worried about when you’re running a bootstrapped startup). My call with the IAEWS reminded me that there’s an association out there for pretty much every interest group under the sun. Some of these associations are huge and have tons of resources to self-manage, but plenty of others outsource their management. Often they’ll hire Mt. Laurel, NJ based Association Headquarters, which “provides associations, voluntary organizations, and medical societies with professional management services tailored to the needs of membership.” Association Headquarters’ clients include The American Mosquito Control Association, The Halloween Industry Association, The National Association of Professional Organizers, The North American Power Sweeping Association, The American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, The American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, and quite a few others. Last year I took it easy on Easter by telling you about Rabbit Rescue, and this year I’m going to do it again. If you’re serious about looking for an Easter related internship, you’ll probably want to check out opportunities with Easter Seals, Jelly Belly, or Just Born Quality Confections (Peeps!). You may also want to check out some other candy companies that I’ve profiled like Mars, The Hershey Company, Charles Chocolates, and Vosges. The reason that I’m mentioning all of these is that today we’re going to take a (quick) look at PMCA (which was formerly known as the Pennsylvania Manufacturing Confectioners’ Association). They are a Bethlehem, PA based non-profit, international association of candy manufacturers. They have board members from many of the companies that I just mentioned (and also from Blommer which runs the factory that makes my neighborhood constantly smell delicious), and they act with a three-fold mission.

  1. To provide an open forum for the free exchange of information
  2. To promote and direct basic and applied scientific research
  3. To educate and train confectionery technical personnel worldwide

It’s all in the name of candy. The PMCA does have staff, but it’s hard to say whether they offer internships or not. However, the PMCA FAQ does note that the organizations staff will try to help link you up with any jobs in the candy industry if you send them your résumé and areas of interest (they’re hoping to add a Career Center to their web site in the future). Maybe they’ll do this for internships too, so reach out to them through their Contact page if you’re interested.
