Every once in a while I get on a documentary kick. Sometimes it’s just because I come across one on tv, but I’ll also seek them out on Hulu or Netflix. Next time that I’m looking for a documentary, I’m definitely going to check out SnagFilms. They’re a Washington, DC based company that aims to “bring the world of independent film to broader audiences.” Their main property is SnagFilms.com, which “offers the broadest collection of great independent movies you can watch right now, on demand, for free, and share with others.” SnagFilms’ other major property is Indiewiere, which is “the web’s leading news, information and networking site for independent-minded filmmakers, the film industry and moviegoers.” Basically they’re doing everything that they can to make independent films available to the masses, for free.

The thing that I love most about the Inc. 5000 is the diversity of the companies. While there are definitely some strong themes throughout the list, there are companies doing all kinds of things in all kinds of places–and succeeding. One of the biggest themes on the list is that online marketing is offering massive opportunity to new companies. One Click Ventures is a Greenwood, IN based company that is big on Internet marketing. Unlike many of the other companies on the list, they do the marketing for themselves, not for clients. One Click Ventures runs a number of e-commerce properties including ABC Neckties, Affordable Scarves, Handbag Heaven, Inexpensive Watches, Reading Glasses Shopper, TravelProducts.com, Socks4Life, and Sunglass Warehouse. Each of these sites is in a very competitive niche, so it should be no surprise that One Click Ventures claims to have a distinct competitive advantage with their “marketing engine” that “consists of a diverse team of subject matter experts, including SEO, PPC, email marketing, social media, affiliate marketing, conversion optimization and content development.”

Better World Books

by on May 1, 2008

We first found Better World Books when we were looking for non-profits jobs to write about for One Day, One Job (in case you were wondering, here are non-profit internships). We quickly realized that they weren’t a non-profit, but a “for profit social venture.” That means that Better World Books operates with the goal of profitability, but they donate all profits to non-profit organizations such as Books for Africa, Room to Read, and the National Center for Family Literacy. It’s a really cool model that seems to be working well for them.
